@-MasterDex-: I think we're gonna try to get some matches going through the Kotaku steam group tonight or tomorrow. You should check it out. #killingfloor
I agree that the series would do well without a co-op mode. But a game like Uncharted wouldn't run the multiplayer field for long. However, I think it's still nice for people who are tired of being pwned in the competitive mode.
There are people who are or will never be as good as those playing the competition. Therefore, those people wouldn't have to experience the grind. I think everyone wins in this case.
any word on split screen - both co op and competitive? im returning cod:waw after work today because i was led to believe it had 4 player splitscreen, whereas it's only 2 offline, and 1 online =/
@yourcitylovesyou: Ya, Uncharted 2 needs splitscreen multi player. 4 player split screen would make it the "halo" of ps3 multiplayers. for sure i think.
I do hope they rework some of the voting options for UC2 multiplayer. Too often were faced with voting for two game types which suck: RPG only or Pistols and grenades. Deathmatch should ALWAYS be an option as it seem everyone drops out of the games when its RPG only or slowly quit handguns and nades when they realze how lame the mode is.
I greatly appreciate MGO after the UC2 beta. If it weren't for the STUPID Konami ID system...
co-op isn't the end all be all, however it's appreciated when a game does it and does it well. A problem a friend of mine and I run into is we hang out and play a lot of games but there aren't that many co-op story mode games. Sort of the last major co-op game we played was RE5 back in March. I can't think of a game since then that's come out with a great co-op experience and we're talking more than 6 months passing.
Their 3 player co-op missions are probably going to be great, along the lines of co-op in Resistance 2 and similar to the spec ops co-op in modern warfare 2. However that's not the type of co-op we generally get excited about. That being said yes I would have loved a co-op campaign to be in Uncharted 2. Whether P1 was Drake through the whole game I don't think would matter, as long as you always had 2 characters to pair up elena and chloe, drake and chloe, drake and elena, drake and sully and what have you. I'm just looking at here I've got 2 great games in Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend coming in a week and neither have the co-op campaign we're looking for.
We've pretty much exhausted the good co-op games out there and we've basically been just playing multiplayer when we hang out. The hardest thing though is find split screen co-op because most games that do co-op now are only doing online co-op, not local co-op. That sucks even more because right now I have both the 360 and PS3 and he doesn't have anything but PC(he wants to get a PS3 soonish after he gets an HD monitor with HDMI.)
So yeah not earth shattering, but split screen co-op campaigns are appreciated.
@Tyr4nt: The death of split-screen co-op is one of the biggest mistakes developer ever made IMO. There are a few titles out there that support it, but there really are only a handful that are worth playing.
And I get that people prefer to have their own screen to play on, and even that it's easier to keep performance up when you have 2 machines to work with instead of 1.
BUT, I feel like the option should always be there. People enjoy playing games with each other in the same room. I honestly wouldn't mind a performance hit for split screen co-op if it meant the option was still there. Turn down the AA, lower the resolution, user slightly smaller textures, whatever. Just make it so I don't have to have 2 TV's and 2 systems setup so I can play a co-op game with my friend.
This is a bit off topic, but I hate it how people refer to modes with endless spawning enemies as "Horde Mode."
I used to have a blast playing SKIRMISH mode online with friends in Aliens VS Predator for the PC like 8 years ago. GoW wasn't the first game to do it, not even close.
@yargh: For the majority of people, Gears was the first game to do it. It's similar to how a lot of people bill Halo as the most innovative shooter of all time when that couldn't be further from the truth.
It's a combination of a generational gap and console gamers not knowing about PC developments.
@TheContender: That's slightly different. Many modern shooters do borrow liberally from Halo. Part of that comes from the FPS market shifting from being primarily PC to primarily consoles though. While the PC still gets its fair share of shooters, the majority of AAA shooters coming out now are being developed with more console-oriented sensibilities in mind. And in the console world, Halo and Call of Duty set the standard for what's the "best."
To me, the best co-op mode I ever played was in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. An opposite but equally fulfilling campaign that tied in with the main story? Amazing. Why don't more devs try doing something like that? That's not to say Uncharted 2 has BAD co-op, but I really want to see a co-op mode like this again.
@Mister Jack is F***ing Metal:
I feel ya man. Probably the best co-op I've ever seen integrated into a game. It wasn't just slapped on like all the Halo games or CoD:WaW.
I really wish the Splinter cell's after Chaos Theory kept expanding the great co-op.
It was there for Chaos Theory then it just went away. :(
@jShazBot: Actually the original Xbox version of Double Agent had 15 coop levels just like Chaos Theory, and they were all linked to the storyline of the single player. I wish more people realized how awesome the last gen version was on the Xbox as opposed to the 360 version, completely different games.
I think this will end up like Metal Gear Online...insanely popular at the get go, but dwindle in popularity rather quickly. Both games are primarily focused on single player and I think both would have benefitted more by including a co-op version of the single player campaign then the multiplayer.
You know what I hate is that developers have their games ready for launch and are already making their DLC maps when they probably COULD'VE just added them in. (MW2/Activision)
Oh yeah, we'll just give you 7 maps, but you'll have to download the other 3 maps we already have ready, but won't release until a future date unspecified.
@cdoggoblingbling: "he'll be working on downloadable content" future tense.
Also bear in mind that most DLC is only started on within the final month or so, so most likely not within shipping of the game, but close enough not to be releasing it long after the popularity of the game has dwindled.
@cdoggoblingbling: Releasing multiplayer content at a later date also lets them keep their QA and testing schedules intact.
Sometimes it is purely a greed thing, but some of it is just to get the game out the door. Things like extra MP maps are not strictly necessary at release, so it is a good way to shorten your list of things to test/validate prior to release.
@zgreenwell: Plenty of PC devs would care to disagree. Even a more console oriented dev (now at least) like Epic has stated that they would have liked to give away Gears maps for free.
The developer may want to give out tons of free content, but the publishers and platform holders (like Microsoft and Sony) say otherwise.
@cyruss:
I couldn't disagree more considering that Uncharted is an a Summer Blockbuster Movie type title. Which means Drake sometimes has to go off on his own. One point in particular the end of Uncharted 1 would have not been the same if we had to lug anyone along for the ride.
@cyruss: I'm with KazeEternal, there's very few moments of Uncharted 1 that strike me as Co-op friendly, most of the time Drake is on his own, and usually for a story driven reason.
Sometimes Co-op is tacked on for the sake of it. e.g with ODST my housemates were playing and I asked where the back story for guy no 2 being there's as I was sure the story was about a lone ODST, turns out theres no backstory at all, player 2 just happens to be there. Which for such a story driven game as Uncharted it wouldn't be acceptable, and if their was co-op it would mean when not using co-op your gonna be dragging AI around with you.
I quite like the way Uncharted 2 works out with the bite size chunks of Co-op so it's only parts where it suits.
