Did they ever explain how there's four Snakes running around in this game? It doesn't seem like Kojima to put something in that and not have an explanation. Maybe a confusing, long-winded explanation, but an explanation nonetheless.
@Mister Jack started the Save The Lombax Foundation:
They obviously made a Metal Gear Time Machine that looks like a transforming DeLorean that went back in time to kill Naked Snake, but Snake was stealthy enough to steal it and go back in time 4x, making it possible for him to complete a once-impossible mission.
@Koztah: I understand what you're saying, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I've never considered that at all. You're the first person I've ever heard mention that. It's interesting.
It does kind of put The Christmas Story's Chinese restaurant scene in a whole new light.
@Koztah: @Shinta: lol mgs apologists are the best. I love me some metal gear but the fans are proper out there. All that stuff about japanese like the average player is supposed to go; "Oh right! Now that doesn't sound ridiculous!"
I am curious though, since you seem to know your stuff, is Big Boss also a really clever, subversive take on Japanese culture or is it just a dumb name that embarrases me to mention if I have to explain the plot of this series to a normal human being?
@mrkinder: Lood dude. The original Metal Gear had bosses like "Arnold", "Coward Duck" and "Black Ninja". (names amended in MGS3: Subsistence re-releases to less ridiculous shit) . Big Boss probably just sounds a lot better in japanese than english and I figure after MGS1 it was too late to change his codename.
And I actually didn't figure it out on my own. I actually had japanese classes a long time ago at the local japanese cultural centre and when the teacher was telling us about the language they brought up the missing la-li-lu-le-lo. It wasn't until MGS4 (years after my classes) that I noticed Meryl respond "La-li-lu-le-lo, what are you talking about?" to Old Snake mentioning the Patriots that it clicked as to what this La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo shit was.
The only thing that concerns me about this game is the control scheme. I hope they prove me wrong but I can really not see this feeling intuitive without a second stick, especially not after MGS4 being so great to control.
As far as I'm concerned the Metal Gear Solid story ended with MGS4. I'm pretty set on the story now and think Snake can rest in peace now. I don't have any desire to go back and play this PSP version.
I am pretty interested in this new game system though. Kojima-san said something about there being a focus on friends, so I'll have to see just what that's all about.
@Friedhamster: I don't know about your argument. It would be pretty valid if this were a sequel to MGS4, but it's a prequel, so Snake "resting in peace" shouldn't be a factor to consider for this game.
@Andrefpvs: I understand that. All I'm saying is I'm not too interested in it. Prequels are kind of silly to me anyways. It's like watching the new Star Wars movies when we already know how the last three end. It helps flesh things out, I guess, but sometimes we don't really need that.
Snake, Big Boss, Liquid, their stories are over as far as I'm concerned. I want to see more on Raiden's game.
@Friedhamster: Raiden's story is over too. I don't see why you'd be more interested in his story when every bit of his plot was wrapped up in 4, just like Solid Snake's.
@Archaotic: I'm talking about the new game. Where he goes now. Snake is done. Raiden has new arms though. Will that kid, his son, become something more? I don't know and would like to.
@Friedhamster: Rising is a prequel too, I'm pretty sure. Just showing his side of the story. Raiden's new body at the end of MGS4 was not the same cyborg body they show on the Rising promos. They completely rebuilt him to have a "human"-looking body at the end so he could live a normal life.
@Friedhamster: A clone is not the same person, just the same hardware. That being said, you should also remember that Solid Snake isn't even a genetic replica of big boss, his genome has been altered.
Metal Gear Solid 2 addresses what you just said directly, how people are shaped to be similar and different, The Patriots learned that simply cloning Big Boss wasn't enough, to really make someone into the "same person, more or less" They realized that to copy a person you must also provide them with experiences to shape their consciousness, skill, and decision making.
Solid Snake Simulation of course was really an experiment in Selection for Societal Sanity. A more general person shaping program.
@Archaotic: Hmm... I didn't think it was a prequel. I guess the title could suggest otherwise though. Maybe it's what he was doing between 2 and 4? Interesting. If that's the case I'm less interested.
@Friedhamster: As far as I can tell, that's pretty much exactly what it's going to be. Raiden's not going to suddenly go back to being a super-powered cyborg when he FINALLY got his body repaired and looking less like a robo-zombie, so it's almost definitely a prequel.
@Friedhamster: All of MGS is predicated on Bis Boss' life. But for all that we know about Solid Snake we know very little of Big Boss. That makes this game incredibly intriguing. How can you not be excited to find out how and why everything that is the Metal Gear saga began? I hope you change your mind.
@grantanamo: I'd need a PSP to play this and since Sony makes the choice to buy a PSPgo (which they are trying to support but doing poorly) or a PSP-3000 (which they want to move away from) a very hard one. $250 for a PSPgo that is supposed to be the new PSP? Or the PSP-3000 and know that UMDs will cease to be someday? I don't know.
@Friedhamster: Well if it makes you feel any better I have a 3000 and a PSPgo and either way you won't be disapointed. I personally like the go better, and considering you are (apparently) new to the PSP you don't have the 'what do I do with my UMD's dilemma'. But if you do get a 3000 instead you don't need to worry about UMD's getting phased out because it can still play digital content so it is essentially future proof. I hope I have aided in your eventual purchase and excitement for Peace Walker!
@Friedhamster: If you buy a PSP3000 and a 16Go Memory Stick, it'll cost you the same (or $10 more, at best) as a PSPGo.
So you get the advantage of UMD with the exact same memory space as the PSPGo, the only advantage of the Go then being the size.
@Mokona: It's just that I don't think there's anything else I have any desire to play on the PSP. I've had them in the past and would get bored when I had nothing I wanted to play on them.
I love me some portable ops, and this seems another backstory-filling side game worthy of my attention. Hopefully the controls will be a bit more polished, but I know I'd play it regardless.
This is fantastic, but I'll be staying away from the internet for a while in the interim. Also, keep in mind that Portable Ops came out in the U.S. before even Japan, though that seems unlikely this time considering they are behind on the voice recordings in English relative to Japanese.
@Fontane:
Everytime I give up they release soemthing cool. Hopefully we get a few more good ones this year but I doubt it. Only 4 more Thursday's to go until 2010.

Had to adopt that ghetto swag and say it like that. Couldn't help it :|
This game is looking really good. PSP games are looking more and more slick. It still shocks me to this day how good games look on it.

Don't get me wrong, I hope this is neat. I just was actually wondering if there is a limit to what MGS can get away with.

Phonetically, you have a i u e o, ha hi fu he ho, sa shi su se so, ta chi tsu te to, ra ri ru re ro and so on, but there is no la li lu le lo. Geddit?

COD Classic is 5$ too much for me to want it, though.
