I wouldn't mind if the next Elder Scrolls is an MMO if it preserves the spirit of the series, the crafting/harvesting/spellmaking/weapon enchanting, and most importantly keeps evolving the real-time combat engine. I would not be at all happy with WoW-style combat in an Elder Scrolls game. #theelderscrolls
I really hope not....Oblivion/Elder Scrolls is the only one of its kind in the SP universe...as of now. I think it should stay that way. #theelderscrolls
@Strangelove: Darkfall is basically this with very VERY dated graphics. So at least the idea of a fps Oblivion-style combat system has been proven to work well in an mmo.
Don't get me wrong... most people hate the game. Its like UO but fps and extremely harsh. Full loot ect...
But actually having to arc arrows depending on the distance of your target and aim fireballs like Oblivion has created the most fun pvp I've ever had.
I'll never tab 1-2-3 again.
So if they could actually take the Oblivion experience and make it the same in an mmo... I would be the happiest gamer alive. #theelderscrolls
Dang! I was secretly hoping the new Elder Scrolls to have me deal with the power vacuum and subsequent civil wars after the death of the royal line.
Could be a brillo way to write the main quest line - side with whichever faction you wish, do the guild quest lines to get the guilds on your side and eventually conquer the land, with the ultimate aim being to stabilize the region and put an end to the slaughter.
Seeing as Bethesda did get exponentially better from Morrowind Oblivion Fallout 3, here's hoping they finally know how to deal with their god-awful animation crew. And writing. And well, engine in general I guess.
At least that island looks better and much, much more interesting than Tamriel. aka GENERIC MEDIEVAL SETTING. #theelderscrolls
Elder Scrolls V for my 360 is about the most wanted game I can imagine outside of Star Wars The Old Republic hitting the console. I loved the hell out of Oblivion and it's expansion. Yeah, it had flaws that hopefully they will iron out with a sequel. And it would have been even better with co-op and arena multiplayer elements. But I put over 300 hours into Oblivion and S.Isles... so yeah, I'd buy Elder Scrolls 5. #theelderscrolls
@jgibson75: what flaws? as far as im concerned oblivion was the most flawless game of this generation, the best 200 hours i ever spent in a game ever totally worth it #theelderscrolls
@checkminus182: The fact they patched it so many times is proof it wasn't flawless my friend. That doesn't mean it wasn't amazing. As I stated, I put over 300 hours into it. But there were several glitches that caused the game to freeze, and a couple more tech problems. Game play wise, I and many other people felt the combat, while fun, could use some work. And the voice overs needed more variety in voice actors. And there were a few exploits to be found that they fixed with patches.... so it wasn't perfect. But it was indeed one of the best games out there. And really, any game as big and open as Elder Scrolls is gonna have flaws. To make a game that big "perfect" would take a miracle, an unbelievable budget and unrealistic development time. lol. #theelderscrolls
@jgibson75: lol, i guess ur right. i played it on xbox and only had one glitch, i never got one of my mages guild achievements, so i have 990 points in oblivion
but either way i would choose oblivion for game of the decade if i had that option #theelderscrolls
Please lord dear god let there be an Elder Scrolls V I think it will be much better considering Bethesda partnered up with id i think this one will be much better.. Lets hope for better animations!!!! I loved oblivion.. Not a big fan of Fallout 3 though... #theelderscrolls
@bakura: I really don't agree. The forests in Oblivion were freaking beautiful. The post-apocalyptic landscape in Fallout 3 was bland and boring in comparison (in my opinion) and really made exploration not nearly as fun for me. I was sooooo excited for Fallout 3, and after pre-ordering it on Steam, I doubt I've logged even 5 hours total. It felt too much like an Oblivion mod, to me. I know it's gotten all kinds of awards and everyone and the fucking cousin has a boner for it, but I just plain don't like Fallout 3. There, I said it.The animation pretty much sucks in both, though. #theelderscrolls
@Strangelove: Wow lol. It must look A LOT better to keep you busy for a month straight. I'm just kidding, you're right, PC is the way to go for those games if you can, good point.
What is it with fantasy worlds and never technologically improving for vast periods of time? Did they all just go, "well, we've got magic so....who the hell needs indoor plumbing?!" If TESV isn't dramatically ahead of Oblivion I'm calling shenanigans. They should at least have a steamboat by then.
@Black-Dog-Howls: The problem with evolving the world is that it would turn into a shooter. The medieval/fantasy setting is a huge part of the appeal. If there's steamboats, there has to be gunpowder and trains. And then it ain't Elder Scrolls anymore, it's practically Fallout. #theelderscrolls
@Archaotic: Cry more. You'll never be satisfied in your current life if you look at life through a fucking mirror. Enjoy a game for it's merits, not for the evolutions that have taken place not within the series, but within the industry.
Frankly, you're an idiot if you think anyone besides a very, very select few want to play another Morrowind. Great game for the time, but it's dated. #theelderscrolls
@Jezuz: I'm not saying Morrowind was better; I'm saying that fans are going to end up judging it that way in the end just like they did with Oblivion. Personally, I don't really care. Having only played like three hours of Morrowind and exhibiting no nostalgia for it, I found Oblivion, sans Shivering Isles, INCREDIBLY wooden, boring, and uninteresting.
Shivering Isles was great. The rest of the game was just dull though.
@Archaotic: The Shivering Isles was the strongest part of Oblivion, no question.
The Dark Brotherhood was pretty good too, but the other questlines are seriously lacking. #theelderscrolls
@AtticusSP: Dark Brotherhood was good until Lachance asked me to kill everyone else. I just stopped the quest line from that point on because I didn't want to be that big of a jerk, haha. #theelderscrolls
@Jezuz: While the game IS dated (and Arch ISN'T the easiest man to please) he does have a point in this one-- mechanically, Morrowind was significantly better than Oblivion. The introduction of enemy level (and gear) scaling, per-level training caps, fast travel as opposed to mark/recall... these weren't improvements. And the removal of robes that could be worn over armor? Who-what? Morrowind had a more detailed, complex machinery behind it-- Oblivion utilised the technological advances of the new hardware, particularly to tell a story really well, but it wasn't a better game by any stretch of the imagination. I liked the content, but I wanted to see Morrowind's mechanics running the thing. I think most Elder Scrolls fans would agree with this. #theelderscrolls
@wild homes loves you but chooses darkness!: It was one of the very first truly polished next gen games. I understand the disappointment by some, but it's the same annoying banter the majority use against GTA.
Developers move on from the old mechanics, and want to develop new technology. That's what makes next generation such a huge part of gamers vocabulary. It's also what makes us yearn for the olden days of last gen.
I often think this generation of gamers will be tomorrows Conservatives. We absolutely despise change, cannot deal with any sort of criticism, and have very little imagination or tolerance for the unknown. #theelderscrolls
I have this vaguest of feelings that TESV has been in development a while.
Its one of those games that doesn't need confirming as we all know its coming.
Especially as I'm sure they said they would be working on the next TES after FO3 was finished, and its been finished for a fair bit now, including DLC.
Off-Topic- Anyone else not getting replies? Bunedoggle stopped yesterday. And now I'm sure I've stopped getting replies for anything. As MW2 I have 4 replies, but no notifications. Couldn't Gawker of just hired the guy that runs Bunedoggle rather than implement their own crap and breaking his as a back up at the same time.
@deanbmmv: I haven't gotten any notice about replies, not sure how I'm going to know when someones calling me an asshole now. I'll live.
Can't wait for the next Oblivion (still not even half way on the first one) . I'd check out the book but then I'll just compare the book to the game and end up ranting like a lunatic about nothing. #theelderscrolls
@theg90: I had the same dream! I remember finding a repository of Morrowind books though, so I'm sure someone did it for Oblivion too. Though I know, it somewhat kills the sense of accomplishment...
You know I'm thinking now of reinstalling Oblivion and attempting to plod through the impossible task on a personal level, repository or no repository. The papers I'm supposed to be writing do not thank you!
"The sun began to set over the Jerall Mountains, its beautiful gleam radiating over the valleys of northern Cyrodiil.
Our hero's waning enthusiasm was restored by the glory of the sunset, and his legs felt as though they had all the energy of youth.
Our hero began jumping through the valley. He jumped on rocks, he jumped over rivers, he jumped through bushes, he jumped across the open fields, he jumped across more rocks, he jumped up a hill, and for good measure he jumped on more rocks.
Our hero suddenly felt a new strength ... and an irrational desire to find a bed."
@starmor: To say it 'sucks' is actually a dumb comment. You may dislike it but it's heralded as a good game for a reason. There's plenty about the game that's great even if it's not to your taste or something you can't appreciate. I'm not trying to be douchey but I think that of most games never mind multi million selling, world wide known and highly praised games. Generally people are too quick to judge rather than appreciate.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Oh the irony of that image. Not only did that guy probably play no more than 1/2 an hour of Morrowind, but FF12 was more singleplayer MMORPG than Morrowind will ever be.
@Spoony Bard: I made a list of all the items in Oblivion and spent my time collecting as many as I can and decorating my house with them. I think I was around 85% completion before I stopped.
I know someone who collected all of the books in Morrowind and arranged them alphabetically in his in-game house.
It is definitely not just you. I can not wait for the next TES game.
I thought Oblivion's genius was in its side quests. I liked the characters and situations more than the ones from Morrowind (I loved how one of the initial Fighter's Guild quests, for example, took the standard "kill-rats" RPG trope and completely inverted it several times over), even if I thought the main storyline suffered as a result from being so de-emphasized.
Video game novel fans are going to have lots of choices, because I think the Halo: Evolutions novel comes out the same day this does.
@jdskeleven: I can't believe I read through all the comments and you're the only one who mentioned the gorgeous cover. Too bad they stuck that shit at the top about 'official novel of the best-selling video game', because it mars what is otherwise great design. I bet the cover wasn't turned in that way, and the designer is pissed. I normally wouldn't read something like this, but the scenario, author and especially that cover are screaming buy me...
@ryancoke: Those were my thoughts. Online level sharing works extremely well, and while it might have been possible on PS2, it definitely wouldn't have been as polished.
@ryancoke: Ditto. Yes, it could have maybe been possible to pull it off on PS2, but the networking capabilities probably wouldn't be as seamless as they are on the PS3.
I think, though, beyond that, it's difficult to think whether the foundational concept behind LBP (it's not just a game, but a social network of level builders and players) would have appeared in the PS2 era. Time has seen many improvements not just to consoles but to social networking strategy and internet technologies, and with these new core technologies, game developers have branched out to interweave new design with new technology and theory.

Also, no Sheogorath, no buy. His section was the only part of Oblivion that didn't bore me to tears.
