That issue had some of the most interesting articles I've read in awhile. Took me about an hour and a half to go through them.
This guy was a real nut, got millions of dollars in funding by conning the government. I liked the part where he had another guy in a room that he'd signal, so that when the military was viewing his "gun recognition software" the camera automatically zoomed up on it making it look real. He more or less fed off the terror fears of Americans to gain profit, then lost it all.
Reading through the comments, is there like a Union of Professional Trollers who wait for celebrities to die so they can swarm the internet with "Who gives a shit" posts?
Does it make them feel special to be able to share their personal scale of Giveshitedness with the rest of the world?
Newsflash, more people give a shit that Brittany Murphy has died than give a shit what any one of us think about it.
@Spoony Bard: I can't tell which is more frustrating though. The trolls (which are inevitable) or the supposedly "Star" commenters that often promote those.
And I'm not referring to those that do so just to rip them a new one.
Britanny, like some other actors, doesn't always go for the 'big' movies only it seems. She's in KoTH after making it big, a movie starring Eminem, a gritty comic book adaptation with a unique art direction.
I'm not surprised that her last movie is low-budget fair from a new British director financed by a top Malaysian studio: [www.variety.com]
I guess my subtlety was lost on you. if I were writing posthumously about the person in that picture, I'd probably mention that they were having fun, not their uncomfortable footwear. that's all.
It bothers me that people say that her untimely death doesnt matter in comparison to others. It does matter, just as much. Nobody deserves to die, especially at such a young age because we all mean something to somebody.
2. She stuck with King of the Hill even after making it big. You can't say that for people like Stephen Colbert and others. Sure, it's just a voice gig, but it was a small role, and she kept doing it.
Not that it matters, but I always considered her to have the second highest geek cred amongst the better known Hollywood actresses (Futurama, King of the Hill, AND Sin City? Win.). Angelina Jolie is first, but Murphy seemed more enthusiastic in the material.
She had the kind of smile that makes me smile whenever I see it, and for her family to be deprived of that, just... damn.
Don't really care about her. It's a shame and all. But there's soldiers dying in Afghanistan and Iraq every day that, I feel, deserve more sympathy than an pretty actress.
@SPni: My original post was harshly blunt looking back. What I really meant to say and what I actually feel is thus;
It's more to do with the endless worship of celebrity in our culture. I have no doubt that she was good person and that loads will miss her but we send young kids into war ill equipped and they come back in body bags. Yet Murphy gets a strange outpouring of grief from everywhere. For once I'd like to see a soldier get that sort of outpour. Hell, I did enjoy Murphy in 8 mile.
I'm sorry if I've offended any of you with my original post.
@nuh uh no way: No you are an idiot if you somehow think someone who spends their whole life pretending to be other people is as valuable of a life as someone that actually makes a difference in the world. Not all life carries the same value. If that were true there would be breaking news stories every time a homeless guy or drug addict died.
@BanhammerStrikesBack: There aren't stories about homeless people dying because people in general are douchebags, and don't care. People care about this because Brittany Murphy is famous, was young, and has a face they recognize. Period.
However, comparing the values of people's lives is so stupid. No matter what value you or I may give someone, they still have an intrinsic value. Maybe that's the Christian in me eeking out.
Also, making a difference in the world is a relative judgment too.
@TenaciousAjay: Agreed. I'm just hoping that there isn't another shoe to drop here - that we find out later that the cardiac arrest was caused by drugs, anorexia, or something else that was self-inflicted and ultimately avoidable.
I rate all deaths on the Bob Barker scale. If I wish Bob Barker had died instead of them, I mourn. If I'm glad Bob Barker is still alive instead of them, I shrug it off. I've found basing deaths on that scale saves a lot of mourning time.
God damn it sucks shes gone. i actually had a lot of respect for her. Luann Platter is one of animations classic characters as far as i'm concerned. Rest in peace Brittany :(
@McWarrior: I wish they banned people for simply being insensitive fucking douches. You are not important, so who gives a shit what you think? Just shut the hell up already.
If a person's level of obscurity was reduced down to the people YOU knew of, I'm sure Wikipedia would consist of 17 pages, half of them being the principle voice cast of Futurama.
Continue living your sad heartless existence, the rest of us will mourn anyone who dies young, especially one who made us laugh in Clueless or feel her pain in 8 Mile.
@therage33: This. F off, McWarrior. The corollary is that just because she's famous doesn't make the death any less tragic than any of those unknown people, we just have more of a connection to her through her work. Thus, news.
@SlinkyGuy - Loves Borderlands to death!: SinCity was good. I didn't like the Tarantino directed story (the bit she was in) but that's because Tarantino and I have creative differences.

"Just stop it. Stop telling me what to do. I am a proud, ignorant woman and no one is going to change that."
Brittany's passing is heart breaking.

I'm sorry. I thought that perhaps you thought that little bit was made up and not about the photo.

This one saddened me, mainly because.
1. She seemed like a genuinely nice person.

Me, no worries. I'm was in Robin Hood Men in Tights.
