I would be willing to heart on her too. Wait, that doesn't sound right. I'd like to game with her. No, that sounds just as dirty. Maybe something about joysticks? Vibration controllers? No?
@NoBullet: a) Videogames are predominantly played by males.
b) Males are slavering, sex-crazed animals.
Therefore,
c) Anything sex-related on a videogame-related website: in the wise words of Borat, "Great success!"
In other news, Mario is red, Sonic is blue, and in Soviet Russia, poem writes you! #lisafoiles
Traditionally, Harley's costume is always just a mix of red and black with white highlights, and I usually hate it when people screw up that color scheme. However, I can't honestly say I disapprove of the addition of purple to the color scheme. #lisafoiles
@senselocke:
Yeah, if I hadn't gotten that from the slew of comments that mention the B:AA connection, I would have gotten it from the slew of comments that mention the B:AA connection. I was speaking more in general terms than about this specific instance of the costume. Like how the LEGO Harley Quinn, in addition to only having one boob due to a mixup in the paint application process, was given two white gloves instead of her usual one red/one black arrangement. That's the only instance I know of where she's had two white gloves, and it doesn't look right. #lisafoiles
@Purple Dave: You do realize we're arguing about a hot blonde game-playing chick cosplaying a hot blonde Batman character, right? I think we should cease and high-five. Maybe engage slavering.
I do see your point, but hot jester chick becoming hot jester/dominatrix chick? I'm OK with that... #lisafoiles
Aside from her being hot (she is) and that being a sweet costume (it is) I'm really glad this got posted because miss (mrs?) Foiles wasn't on my radar before. I see she's got a blog about games and a review site. Whether either are any good or not I don't know yet but I'm glad I now have the option to decide that for myself. Thanks Crecente.
Also, some people have been complaining about the "girl gamer" topic being brought up again. If people would take the time to follow the links you'd see that she only posted her blog after the piece on Kotaku was posted. Whether you agree with her opinion or not, you can't really fault her for writting about it when Kotaku did it first. #lisafoiles
And to the people whining about her wanting attention, what the hell do you think Halloween is all about? I'm sure you don't dress up in a costume NOT to be noticed. WTF people?
@heretrix: Well I'm assuming that he was trying to flaunt his knowledge of Harley Quinn seeing as she originated from the cartoon. Thus his reason for stating it was a tv show before a game. #lisafoiles
That's because women who are confident in both their looks and mind are no good skanks. In it only for the attention, dressing up in a smutty outfit brings. Regardless of the taste, or creativity shown in their pursuit, they're attention grabbing WHORES! The only thing worse then a beautiful woman, is a beautiful woman not crushed by self doubt.
Ok, I have no idea who this girl is, but that's an amazing costume.
It is true that plenty of girls play GH, or flash games, or have a DS, but that doesn't necessarily make them gamers.
Most of the women I know will jump in at a rhythm game party because they like karaoke, but, for instance, in my grad school, only one comes to class every other day in a BlizzCon, or Diablo III shirt.
If I had to ponder a "test" for girl gamers (first off, I'm not convinced it would differ in any way from a "gamer guy" test), it wouldn't necessarily be centered around esoteric gamer knowledge, but conduct, such as (non-exhaustively):
- Wearing gamer T-shirts and collecting gamer memorabilia.
- Going to game launches, conventions, LAN parties.
- Having a Handle, and having friends that ONLY know you by your Handle. #lisafoiles
Wait, why are people hating on this gal? She put together a great costume, looks convincing as Harley, and she decided to share her pic with Kotaku, who then decided to share it with us. It's like all them photos of carved pumpkins, cakes, and other video game art, it just so happens the subject matter is a pretty gal.
Also, yeah, there's plenty of girl gamers around, they just tend to gravitate towards more social games like WoW, or like Black-Dog-Howls points out, they keep quiet in games like Modern Warfare to avoid unwanted attention. #lisafoiles
@latecustomer: Any time I've played a Live game with a girl/woman in the room, it's been followed up with your typical teenage boy attempt to make her his e-girlfriend.
Hell, even on games like Everquest where most people are mature, my wife gets hit on when people realize she's not just a dude playing a female character.
I don't think the percentage of women playing games has gone up all that much, just that they're playing different types of games. My wife used to only dabble in MMOs like Everquest (like a large portion of women, I imagine) and only recently began fiddling with my console games.
I'm sure as the generations pass, more women will be playing more console games. It's down to the familiarity of the control scheme. Keyboard + mouse is easy to introduce at a later age than a controller with two movement sticks, a d-pad and 10 buttons.
But back on topic, awesome costume, and you wear it very well. #lisafoiles
Maybe I'm just too old or something, but I don't remember this girl being on All That in the least. Then again, I stopped watching All That when Little Pete joined the cast, but he wasn't too little anymore... #lisafoiles
Wow, what a bunch of cynical bastards you all are. Practically 90% of the posts in this talkback are basically accusing her of doing this as some kind of publicity stunt. The fact that she has been reading Kotaku for awhile and we've only now seen her clears her in my eyes.
Fuck the haters, good costume Lisa.
(And as a side note - All That is still going? Man that takes me back to my childhood.) #lisafoiles
Usually girls that game tend to stay quiet to avoid drama and if they do talk it's because you've wormed your way into their friendslist and party player. I've also found that "Girl Gamerz" really only avoid games that are "unpopular" so to speak.
Off the top of my head I've never run into the annoying stereotype in Starcraft, Diablo 2, ArmA, Socom 1&2, and FFXI. While Starcraft and Diablo 2 are popular....we're talking 1998 and 2000 man. Socom 2 also came around right before the online console boom, and FFXI isn't exactly the most popular MMO on the block nor the easiest to get into.
However, I still find it harder to run into girls that game versus Girl Gamerz, just like it's harder to find a thirteen year old on Steam, PSN, or Live that isn't a retarded little bastard that should be muted and banned from online interaction even if it's limited to text. #lisafoiles
@Black-Dog-Howls: I dunno... I know a few girls who play Diablo 2 to this day, and are trying to get an active community of friends to buy the 3rd one when it launches...
The reason a lot of people don't bump into girl gamers in these titles is because quite often they'll create friend-only rooms to avoid being treated differently from their peers....
thats in my experience... I also know a few girls on xbox live who make their sex known first-and-foremost because they like the attention it garners... courses for horses, or something. #lisafoiles
This costume is so awesome, it's not even funny. Instead, it is sexy. I was also from Arkham Asylum for Halloween. I know it's not much, but I'm not a craftsman, and I made it myself: #lisafoiles
is it just a publicity stunt? maybe someone whos not famous...... but then maybe theyre just looking to become well known. I think this is a bad way to show you like games. I can also give my dog a <3 kotaku sign. #lisafoiles
@mepadels: then don't forget to add a not-very-funny caption to the picture of your dog, preferably something about a (basement) cat, bucket or hotdog and try to make it badly phonetically spelled to add extra "lol-ness".
I have never heard of this female person either, but if this were a publicity stunt it's a bad one. I mean, wouldn't you try to appeal to an audience interested in what you're selling? She's a Nickelodeon person... not a game designer/developer/publisher or porn "actress". What can she possibly offer us gamers? #lisafoiles
@Rakkoon: no you'd try to appeal to new audiences, not existing. That's how you gain popularity, by introducing yourself to new people in a way that they will appreciate you.
For a girl to wear that and hold a sign about kotaku, it's just trying to attract attention. Not simply say, I like kotaku. Her liking kotaku should be just as important as you, one more enlightended reader. #lisafoiles
@mepadels: Pffft you guys don't remember her? She was Ren's friend on Even Stevens. I remember her perfectly, although I didn't watch a whole lot of All That. #lisafoiles
Wow... I'm really curious why people are complaining so much about her costume. 1) It's a great costume, the attention to detail is fantastic. 2) She looks incredibly sexy wearing it. and 3) I didn't know people had such a negative reaction to the look of Arkham Asylum... The animated series was Batman for 8-13 year olds people. This is based on a Mature rated game. You know, for adults? So adult themes like violence and *gasp* sex are going to be more prevalent. The voices from The Animated Series were merely for fan service. I for one think Arkham Asylum better captured the look of Batman's world than any other non-comic media before it, and I'd even argue it's better than a lot of the comics. Batman is supposed to be one of the darkest heroes in comics, this isn't a Saturday Morning playful romp. Get over it people. Either that or go buy Batman:TAS on DVD and watch that on repeat instead of playing an awesome game. Either way, quit complaining. #lisafoiles
@Accordion: Actually, you've got things switched around. The whole aesthetic of Arkham Asylum feels embarrassingly adolescent and 'edgy,' and like most 'mature' games these days, seems aimed directly at the tastes of 12-13-year-old boys.
The animated series' aesthetic, however, is very formal and modern. It feels fairly stylish and grown-up (as far as superhero characters can be, I guess). #lisafoiles
@Accordion: That's -not- the ORIGINAL. When I watched Batman: The Animated series, Joker still had EYES. You know, with whites and pupils? And I'm sorry, The original Harley is cool and all, but I for one don't find zany looking cartoons sexy. Now sexy ladies that are scantily clad? That's what I think is sexy. Call me old fashioned. #lisafoiles
@Mike Haddaway: picky picky, that compilation video features both versions…
Call me mad, but i find a beatiful woman wearing a skin tight suit more attractive than a roughed up hooker look. Keep in mind im only talking about the in game presentation here, i have no objections to this pic of Lisa or her oufit, but its not so hard to see why people prefer the all in one look.
you dont need to be barely clothed to be sexy. #lisafoiles
I am a girl who plays video games for a good 3-4 hours every day. Does that make me a girl gamer? I don't know. But I don't want that tag.
Girl Gamer is a tag reserved for girls who do nothing but squeel on their microphone and play ditzy to get attention from boys on the other side of the world. Do not want.
Edited in; Major girlcrush on Harley Quinn, but her old outfit was so much better!
@maschinerie: I can't stand the Arkham Asylum redesigns, and it's a big turnoff for me. I don't care how cute the actual girl in the photo is; being reminded of the redesign just sickens the Batman: TAS fan in me. #lisafoiles
@maschinerie: I have to respectfully disagree with you on that one. To me the girl you described, one who acts ditsy over the mic and in a game just to get attention, is exactly the kind of girl I wouldn't consider a girl gamer. For me a girl gamer is someone, like a guy gamer, that plays video games simply for the fact that they love playing them, thats it. No alterer motives like attracting males, being entertained on a bus, or keeping "fit." In my opinion all you need to be a girl gamer is a love of all things video games, that and a double X chromosome of course. #lisafoiles
Harlequin is one of my biggest distractions. And this girl has made a very good job of that costume.
Kudos for the effort put forth.
"In it she argued that girls who play games are not rare, but girl gamers are."
They're not.
They just lay low.
I'm male and I have quite a few female gamers in both my XBox Live and PSN friends lists. Not so much my XBox any more as I don't use it online and I emptied the list, but it was rather full in the past
Not to mention the various forums I'm signed up with.
They lay low because it is a mostly male dominated market, and the average male in that demographic is a sexist pig.
And to clarify, I said "average" as in not all of them. That's before all the insecure people who feel I'm talking about them try to defend them selves against a non-attack, and showing that in fact they are that person.
Let's just say, if you do take offense by that, then you are that person. Someone who isn't will just let it go, knowing it's not aimed at them.
I feel sorry for any girls wanting to play games.
They're all met with the textbook remark: "A girl, and she plays games?".
I find some of the best gamers I know are girls, granted a hand full of them are Japanese and live every waking moment in arcades.
But still.
But my point;
"Girl Gamers" should not be a term. And it's rather sexist.
They're "Gamers" just like the rest of us. Just because they have mammary glands and internal reproductive organs doesn't make them less of a gamer.
I'd bet anything a lot of them could kick most male backside on a game.
PS: They can vote now, you know! (sarcasm)
@Sisee: Whether they're actually rare or not the perception is that they are. Perhaps if they stopped laying low we'd realize they make up something close to 50% of the market? That'd be cool. In the mean time, I have to agree with Miss Foiles. I know a fair number of girls who play games but I don't know many who are passionate about the hobby. #lisafoiles
