I like the melting one. Very cool.

I miss my old Gameboy. When my cousin and I got our GBAs we shot at our old ones with a bb-gun. Bad idea for future-nerd me. :(

As strong as the image of the DS's dual screen is, I think that classic gameboy form is much more iconic.

I still have my original Game Boy. Like, the original released in 1989. I still remember the day I got it...my dad had (fortunately) just gotten a promotion at his job which meant more money coming in. I had a subscription at Nintendo Power at the time, and I know he knew what was up because he worked from home and I always caught him reading all my new issues whenever I got home from school. I hadn't necessarily made a fuss about getting one as I was apt to do at the time, but deep down inside I knew I wanted one. I just wasn't very cognizant of release dates at the time. Anyways, one day I come home from school and my dad says "Hey, let's go to the mall!" I was reticent at first cause hey, those few hours after school had some pretty bombass cartoons. However, a 7 year old has very little bargaining power in such situations, so I went. I thought it was just gonna be another "Mall Trip With Dad," meaning he buys suits and gets into an argument with the sales clerk at Sears. It started out the same, with my dad buying various things that at the time I regarded as Old People Stuff, but then at the last minute we swung by the electronics section (I can't remember exactly where actually) and there it was. A Game Boy. I thought my Dad was teasing me. He wasn't. He bought it and two games for me, and that was that. Probably one of the most awesome random days of my life, now that I look back at it. I'm sure it was more of a dual-gift kind of thing, because instead of catching him reading my Nintendo Powers afterschool I totally caught him playing Tetris, but whatever. I was one happy 7 year old, and everytime I come home and look in my old room, there it is, the Game Boy. Beat to hell through years of use, and essentially useless since I cannot find any of the original games. But everytime I look at it, I remember that day, and it makes me almost as happy as I was that day.

End random wistful nostalgia rant. But it's good to see the original Game Boy get some retro-art love.

@raffleking: This story makes me happy :) I too received my original Gameboy on the day of it's release. £70 it was! Those were the days. I remember breaking it by head-butting the screen in frustration (thanks Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly). I cried :'(

Good on them! The Game Boy truly was revolutionary in the way that it used its resources at hand and popularized handheld gaming for many!

And no other gaming platform really was as popular as the Game Boy was at the time or ever since. And if there's one thing Nintendo always had a grip on, it was the handheld market. #gameboy

It's difficult to explain but whenever I see the old school Gameboy I have this strange nostalgic vibe where I remember exactly what it felt like to be a kid again. It's more intense than mere nostalgia. Suddenly I remember exactly the kind of foods I would eat, the smell of my old house, how much bigger everything seemed to be.

It's amazing how such a simple object can elicit those kinds of intense memories that would otherwise be dormant.

@Kitty: Whenever I hear the tinkly Super Mario Land theme music, I flash back to sitting in art class in school, the smell of paint and turpentine. With the Tetris theme, it's a long road trip on Christmas Day, the dawn turning to morning on Highway 5. That's just the audio. Seeing those green-brown ghostly little LCD images is like being in a freakin' time machine.

I remember as a 9 year old, my family was super dirt poor. We were bouncing around between Domestic Violence shelters and life was extremely difficult for myself, my mother and sisters who were just babies at the time.

I never had any of the things my classmates and neighbors had but one day, my mother surprised me with a GameBoy. It came with Tetris and that might have been the happiest moment in my life.

Very few people had it at that time and I drew a lot of attention for the first time in life - while not being made fun of for my ragged appearance.

I played the GB until I was putting dead Duracell batteries in the freezer - thinking making them really cold would give them some more juice.

I played Tetris until I got so good that the pieces were just blurs on the screen. That was the only game I had for a long time but I never enjoyed it any less.

Thinking back on those horrible days, the GameBoy was the one thing I had that brightened up those days - until my 4 year old sister snuck it out of the house one day and left it in a phone booth and never to be seen again.

The GameBoy has always been in my personal Hall of Fame.

If you have read this far, thank you. #gameboy

I loved that thing so much, I still have it somewhere. In fact, I think I have about 4 original game boys in my house, including one covered with worn stickers of Pikachu, Scyther, Jigglypuff and Nurse Joy that were free with Nintendo Official Magazine! Ah, the nostalgia.

@Scotland: I bought the felt gameboy case ( which you linked to) about a month before the gizmodo article. As soon as it was featured it sold out completely, the poor girl who made them probably worked til her hands bled to keep up with demand, subsequently she appears to have stopped making them (although there are a now a number of similar cases available).
I really like the case although I question if it will last much longer, I often get compliments from ( mostly non gaming) friends, most of whom own those hideous silicon cases (which I despise) or something equally horrific. #iphone
