    For video games, the NES was the child learning to walk; the Dreamcast was an older child learning to ride a bicycle. In that way they were "firsts", despite all the memorable (and perhaps better) games put out on the early to mid-90s systems.

    Both the NES and Dreamcast have a naivete about them... "Entertainment System" sounds golly-gee quaint today, and the "Dreamcast" reminds one of fluffy clouds and pastel spirals, horrendous voice-overs, fuzzy polygons, and cheesy pop soundtracks.

    Gaming entered middle school with the introduction of the PS2, and became kind of a dick. #nintendo

    That's a damn hard choice between the two...obviously the NES had the larger library and the best NES games are at least arguably better than the best Dreamcast games, but I felt like the DC put out better games at a more consistent rate. For every Super Mario 3 we had dozens of awful titles.

    Hard to really compare the two as they were more than a decade apart. It's not apples and tacos, but it may be apples and oranges.

    If I could pick any old system, I wouldn't mind getting in some Star Raiders on the Atari 5200 one more time...as long as the controllers lasted longer than 6 months for a change. #nintendo

    I know dreamcast (like Laserdisc and 8-track) has some hardcore nostalgic enthusiasts, but putting it on par with the NES? I'm not sure about that. It was a great little system before it was aborted, but... #nintendo

    man a freaking mint condition master system would be dope for a christmas gift. almost all my consoles/hand helds were gifts.

    lets see... i got an ipod touch (to specifically play games) last year, a ds in 04, a mint condition turbo grafx 16 in 01, a dreamcast in 99, a saturn in 96, a game gear in 92, and my first video game related christmas gift/console ever. that bad boy in the pic (i asked for an nes, my parents made an awesome mistake). that was in december of 89 and i still have the box and all the inserts. when i mention it or show it off, most ppl are like 'wth is that?"

    i got my nes and xbox for my birthdays in 90 and 02 respectively. growin up was fun man.

    A Neo Geo AES or SNES. I've only been able to play those two consoles, and the games released for their respective consoles, through emulators. You can never fully appreciate anything until you have the real thing.

    Garou or Last Blade on Neo Geo and Final Fantasy "III" with Metal Warriors on the SNES? That would be the best damn Christmas since I got my PS2 back in 2001. #nintendo

    @KeroseneClimax: I disagree with that, I can totally appreciate games from older systems more through emulators on my PC than I could from something like the virtual console (which completely baffles me as to why people spend money on that stuff) or the real thing. Being able to use save states in old games make them a hell of a lot more enjoyable and ten times less controller throwing rage inducing. #nintendo

    @Rajolae: Rage inducing? I got my NES when I was 6, and my SNES when I was 1o and I never met a game that was too hard for me (short of Actraiser 2).

    @Koztah: 6/10 year old us had a hell of a lot more time and patience to devote to impossible games.

    nowadays 26 year old me has no time to keep playing the same level for 6 hours straight. I'd rather enjoy the more limited amount of time I have for gaming #nintendo

    @Koztah: dude.... games like road runner's death valley rally, battletoads, and some of those capcom games built on frustration like super ghouls and gosts (wtf, beat the game twice keeping the special weapon the whole way to see the ending) are things that i just dont get any enjoyment out of anymore.

    @poplin: Road Runner's Death Valley Rally was a Tengen game, wasn't it? They were, as a rule, not only badly designed but also controlled poorly and weren't even fun when they were released. You learned to stay away from Tengen and LJN. #nintendo

    @poplin: 7 year old me hated Death Valley Rally with a passion :p If it's the game I think you're talking about...where you run as the roadrunner in a straight line and try to snag the birdseed...I think.

    I've gone back to some of my favourite NES games and loved 'em - Metal Storm, Shatterhand, Metal Gear, Megaman 3, Crystalis, Castlevania 1-3, Contra, Super C... Still have no real issue beating them, apart from having to leave the NES on (gotta go to sleep, work, etc) and occasionally fucking up my game because I'm not "warmed up". But they're still feasible and fun. #nintendo

    @fozfan33: Didn't the Saturn come bundled with Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop at one time? I can't see how any other bundle could ever compete with that selection. #nintendo

    @the7k: I'm pretty sure it did. One that I bought off e-bay had some cardboard sleeves with games like Virtua Cop and Daytona,a s well as a Virtua Fighter.

    I really only use it to play NiGHTS though.. #nintendo

    In my last post I forgot to mention that Panzer Dragoon Saga was lent to me by a friend, and it was very enjoyable! And, wow.. amazing graphics for a Saturn. #nintendo

    @AcousticCurves: Yeah, I actually got my Saturn at the beginning of this gen. It's still very relevant, with a huge library of great games. If Sega had a single brain cell left, they'd give it the compilation treatment that they've already given the Genesis 30+ times. #nintendo

    @tralfaz23: I still have my SNES, Earthbound and Zelda: A Link To The Past. I unfortunately sold my Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy II and III (IV and VI) for ridiculous amounts (120-200$ apiece) to fund my PS1 habit in the late 90s.

    You want a real depressing day? When my ex moved out a few months ago she took my gold cart Zeldas with her. AND stole my pet python. Cops are useless. #nintendo

    @excel_excel: What thing wore out? Having trouble getting it to read your cartridge? If so, the trick is to push the cart in, then pull it out just a bit (just enough so it almost doesn't clear the plastic when it's pushed down). Works every time. #nintendo

    @Tossy: If you have any kind of electronic repair abilities, you could just take the system apart and use a stiff wire with a slight hook shaped at the end a pull each of the contacts slightly. My NES works so well, I don't even have to push the cartridge down. :) #nintendo

    @mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta: You mean the power pack that clips to your belt and barely holds a charge for more than a couple of hours? Unless you strap several car batteries to your back, you aren't going to get much out of those chargers. :( Is it sad that I bring my Game Gear to play on the bus on the way to my college? I usually bring my Nomad, but the dam thing is even worse on batteries than the Game Gear. Oh, the screen is also crap. :/ I love the damn thing to death though! #nintendo

To explain, the PowerBack was a mildly ergonomic battery that screwed into the back of the Game Gear and plugged into the DC9V port after being charged from another DC port (plugged into an outlet) that provided a four-hour charge and was easier on the hands.

    I now the Dreamcast was cool, but one of the best toys of all time? I am sorry but the PS2 owns that spot way above and beyond the Dreamcast. Some Sega fanboy obviously made that list.

    @tiekmir: in 1999- the Dreamcast was white-hot. one of the best console launches in history. tons of great games, and hot exclusives. an unbeatable price of $199, and the first next-gen system on the block.
    if you were a core gamer in 1999, you were in love with the Sega Dreamcast. i often wonder, if Sega had been a larger company with deeper pockets, maybe they'd still be in the console business today, and maybe even leading the market. the dreamcast was definitely ahead of it's time. #nintendo

    I would much rather play an NES game over a PS3 or 360 game. Gaming lost something during the transition from 16 to 32 bits. The only game I've played in recent memory that captures that same feeling "fun" is Wii Sports Resort.

    Hell, even the Katamari guy said that the industry used to be fun back in the Famicom days.

    Videogames are too much like hollywood movies right now, and sadly it's a trend that is killing the industry. #nintendo
