With all due respect to the people who have commented here and gave their opinions, I believe publishing such an article shows that Kotaku isn't just any other gamer Blog. It serves more as a warning to all of us to be more careful. not from gaming, but from "sore losers" or just anyone who has unexplainable bursts of rage.
The details in this article seem incomplete: Did the 25 year old lose? Was the kid being annoying (as most 9 year olds are)? Was the 25 year old jealous? The point is, and as the grandfather said, the kid died over something so stupid... a video game. I'm a self confessed gamer, and I love my consoles, but would I kill a 9 year old kid is he was just a "kid"? 99.99% of us would say no. The rest wouldn't be so sure. Some people have issues with losing, other have an inferiority complex... this is normal, this is reality, the kid was just very unlucky. A tragic story.
My point is, as Owen said as well, video games aren't to be blamed here, but i myself wouldn't blame the parents if they went all out and said "eff videogames". The parents have the right to mourn, and have the right to lash out over anything they want because they feel guilty (over leaving him alone, or even buying the PS3) and are in mourning. Imagine dying over a last copy of FFXIII? Is your life worth that much? (Please note the sarcasm here)
Thank you for posting this, it's unfortunate that some readers don't really get why you posted it in the first place.
@Here's Some Weapons: Err she's be silly not to have him charged for stealing like that. This isn't a can of soup he stole; it's a several hundred dollar piece of equipment.
@Here's Some Weapons: So if you were a mother and your son stole say, your computer, pawned it, for BOOZE AND CIGARETTES, wouldn't you be I dunno, upset? Angry? Pissed off that your son obviously doesn't have a job? Being someones son does not give you an automatic pass to steal their stuff.
@Lonesnipa: Your right, but I dont think your getting at what HSW's is saying, for such a small value item, she probably should have diciplined him herself, maybe she's neglected doing it for the best part of this kids life, which is why he's a douche now.
Though it could be quite the opposite and this Wii theft was really just the last straw.
@Blore07: Or maybe she has tried doing all she can to discipline her son to no avail. Maybe she felt that if she did this he would finally get the message.
@Here's Some Weapons: It doesn't matter if she's his mother. He stole from her and sold it. I remember seeing this documentary about animals, and one of the segments was about a lioness and her cub. The cub would chew on her tail, down to the bone. She was in extreme pain, but even when they moved them to separate adjacent enclosures the mother lioness would stick her tail through the bars so the cub could chew on it, even though it meant pain and possibly losing the tail. I don't remember what the solution was eventually, but is this mother supposed to be like this lioness? Should she just let her son commit major theft and get away with it?
@Zunnoab: Ok, man...you are completely missing my point. I never once said anything in defense of the son. In fact, I believe I called him a piece of shit. What I am saying, is that this is not major theft - this is petty theft. For the mother to feel like she has no other options than to have her son arrested and charged over a relatively small crime (and this is a small crime), there are clearly underlying issues in this mother/son relationship. In hindsight, I guess this was already intuitively obvious, so I shouldn't have even bothered bringing it up.
Wow, the mother won't drop the charges? He may be the worst son in the world but doesn't a porcupine love it's own?
I hope he gets the case dismissed or record erased upon finishing community services because going through the system is a tad bit much for stealing his mom's Wii.
@raffleking: I'm just happy there are other people with a good taste in movies. Thinking about the movie made me actually listen to Clint Mansell's insanely good score again. That's music for the ages...
@umfk: Clint Mansell is amazing. The scores for The Fountain and Moon were also amazing. Oh, and if you dig him, chances are you dig the Kronos Quartet...and you're in luck, cause they're touring! Check out the dates! I'll be at the College Park, MD show!
@raffleking: It's a shame there's nothing there as far as Toronto dates go. That's alright though, it seems I'm the only person out of most of my friends with an appreciation for these movies/music.
@jusu: Kotaku just reports on videogames as they appear in the news occasionally - this isn't anything new and is a pretty stupid thing to be upset about. They probably report on these kinds of things because it offers up insight on how videogames are viewed in the mainstream at times.
WTF! Who let a 9 year-old stay up playing vids all night with adults who aren't even members of the family?? I wonder is it Tony Hawk's fault or mommy and daddy's??

She's clearly one of those mothers who'd rather have the cops discipline her kid for her, which is probably why the kid's a piece of shit.

She bought the excuse that it was at a friend's house.

Nobody buys it to actually play, they buy it because the television told them to.

"But while I don't mean to be "that guy," the video game is only incidental to the cause here."
If videogames have _nothing_ to do with it, why do you keep publishing these kinds of articles? If videogames are not an issue here why not just STFU?
Me, I'm tired of reading about stabbings, killing sprees etc where "video game is only incidental here"..
