After enduring the Stargate Worlds beta I can honestly believe what vet testers were trying to warn us about: if you're looking for a sneak peek - dont do a beta. It will destroy your will to live. Or at least kill your interest in that title. Mind numbing framerates stress test delays and a host of unexpected bugs glitches and crashes later I am so done with any notion of ever trialing that game.
You get so hyped up because youre about to get a free look and then - nothing. First you have to spend 6-12 hours figuring out why its not loading. Then when you do get in, you get 6 frames a second, none of the character animations have been compiled and then the game crashes unexpectedly.
By all means if you have never participated in a game beta go right ahead, but I've already done mine. Never again.
@Overheal: I disagree completely, I've participated in closed betas for EQ1, EvE, AO, Guild Wars and LotRO, and each one was a blast. In fact, I found EQ1 beta to be more enjoyable than post-release.
(okay, so GW beta sucked, but that's to be expected from GW)
There's nothing like playing an MMO before the great unwashed hordes wash over the gates. Rare spawns/resources are easy to camp. Game economies aren't inflated/deflated/borked by mass trade and gold sellers. GMs are occasionally available. Somebody might listen to a suggestion. I even enjoyed some of the end-of-the-world, pwipe events.
I think beta enjoyment just depends a lot on the game. Do some research on the title before you sign up.
The site is down. But I'll check it out. My chances of getting in this beta is probably slim since my PC can barely run WoW as it is. lol. But I have hopes of upgrading or getting a new machine before the game launches. I've never wanted a PC game bad enough to upgrade, being a console gamer. And even though I have hopes that Old Republic will eventually hit the X-Box 360, I don't think I could wait that long to play it. So I'm going to pony up for a new PC. That is how strong a draw BioWare games, and KOTOR is to me.
"Thank you for visiting www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com. We are making adjustments to the site due to the overwhelming response to the testing announcement. Please be patient and check back later. We estimate that the site will be back up in the next few hours."
Ha! Well done, Kotaku! I suppose I'll have to check back after class.
@DigitalHero: I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
Hmmm... i probably fall under the category of dirty, stinking lurkers (not that it'll stop me from trying). On the plus side, this finally motivated me to register to comment on Kotaku!
I've never tried anything like this before but am interested in doing it for this game. Has anyone here been beta tester for an MMO? Do I need to be skilled at them to be one? :)
@Foppemoa: Nah, reversing the polarity of the neutron flow is a Doctor Who thing. In Star Trek, you usually need to invoke a subspace inversion (or do something with tachyons).
@BritBloke916: I haven't seen Dr Who.
But i have seen basically everything star trek, and i strongly recall that they on several occations inverse the polarity to X to solve a problem. ;)
It always fails, but that's another issue.

I'm active in ME/ME2, Dragon Age, and SW:ToR. I'm going to cry manly tears if I don't get into this beta.
