i loved genesis....it had so many incredible games
i still feel like the genesis/snes era may have had the highest amount of high quality games, but it's hard to remember exactly and compare to now.
but yea....we need more fun platformers nowadays. streets of rage, golden axe, sunset riders, altered beast, earthworm jim, splatterhouse, thats just off the top of my head but damn there were some greats. and phantasy star and shining force still some of the best rpgs ever
@optimusp: Hey there, do you even own a 360 to be claiming to know that it would not last long ? I honestly don't think so. Therefor.. ....shut the fuck up.
@I Am Error: I owned a 360 and it didn't last for 10 months, fixed it, it lasted 3 months. So I guess the guy above KNOWS what he is talking about... unfortunately the 360 is a fragile console and this isn't flamebait nor fanboyism, it is the truth.
@optimusp: I don't expect any disc based system to be viable 20 years down the road. There's just too many moving parts for them to be as reliable as cartridge based hardware. While slower drive systems such as the TG-16-CD may have a prolonged life compared to the speedier Dreamcasts and PS2s out there, they'll fall apart eventually.
It's mostly my art-school critiqueness, but I oddly REALLY like both Genesis box arts (that model, and the later model that I got).
I remember getting mine when I was 6, in '94, with the game "Six Pack" which had:
Revenge of Shinobi
Sonic 1
Streets of Rage
Golden Axe
Columns
and this motorcycle game I was hooked to.
The Genesis was in the top 5 for definitive childhood memories. If I have kids, they're playing nothing after the N64/PS1 and GBC until they're like...13.
Happy Anniversary Sega Genesis! Wow 20 years! Has it been that long?
The Sega Genesis was my 6th system and when I first put Sonic in and played it. It was so impressive I got goosebumps. I was used to 4-bit and 8-bit graphics. Where things flickered and characters seem to float around the screen, but Sonic had weight to him and the background was moving in 3D layers. I played it for the next 15 hrs.
Unfortunately I had a small 13 inch TV from 1982. We weren't rich. I mowed a lot of lawns to get my games. I still have photos from those days. My room looks so dirt poor, hehe.
Genesis wasn't my first console, but I got more enjoyment and use out of my model 1 Genesis than any console before or since.
Heck, that thing was such a trooper that when my original one gave up the ghost as the result of an unfortunate power plug error, I went out and replaced it, but but not with the model 2 or model 3 that, by then, were in the wild.
I loved my Genesis. I had always been a Sega kid, having the Sega Master System and having all the Nintendorks laugh at me... and when I had the Genesis, I was able to laugh back.
Ahhh.... Sega...... O'well... off to play the Wii with my kid.
SEGA MEGA DRIVE !!!!!!!! I love old school consoles they last forever even if you treat like crap they still work like my mega drive, still works like the first day I got it 15 years ago the only problem is some of the cartridges.
As far back as I can remember, there was an nes in my room, and shortly thereafter, an snes.
I loved them.
Then, a new video rental store opened in town, called JC Flicks. The greatest video rental store to ever exist, ever.
While perusing their offerings I found something I had not heard of before, another game console. It was the Sega Genesis. That thing I saw in comic books.
So, we rented the system one day when I had a friend over to spend the night. The game we got, Sonic 3.
It was magic. I got a genesis for christmas a couple years later, but never got many games for it beyond discounts at toysrus and the sonic games, but over the last year my genesis collection has exploded.
Today, that same friend I first played the genesis with is going to meet up with me, and damn straight we are going to play some genesis.
@RichardSandwich: Systems don´t die, people die. Systems just have support ended, but you can still play them (actual consoles), by emulation and other means (Virtual Console, etc). So, I don´t consider any system dead even if the support ends, because fan support never ends.
So.. the master system didnt put sega on the hardware map?
even though it was hugely popular in europ and games are still being made for it now, in brazil?

I LOVED my Genesis. I remember my mother rented it for me with Altered Beast one weekend for my birthday, because we were too poor to get one.
By that X-mas, she worked her butt off to get me one, with Sonic!!!
I loved it!

Was that really necessary? This is a celebration of the Genesis. Taking a shot at Sonic is just petty and unprofessional.

Also, I, too, love the graph paper and chiseled, polished metal inherent in Genesis design work.

Whoa you guys are right. I just noticed that myself. Yeah I did record video games on VHS tapes back then. It must be a tape.

It looks strange today to see all those controller wires. I don't miss them in the least.
