If you did, we hope you wiped your personal details from the machine. Because Circuit City didn't.

Having read our post on GameStop's Texas refurbishment centre, we were contacted by a reader who works in a similar facility (though not one that services GameStop). And there, he claims, things were a little different.

See, this facility (doing work for a smaller retail chain) bought some of Circuit City's stock of pre-owned 360s, PS3s, DSs, PSPs and Wiis. And according to our tipster, didn't get what they paid for. The deal was that this company would be purchasing an allotment of consoles that would be pre-owned, though in working condition, and with maybe a few components missing.

Instead, not only does he allege that the majority of consoles broken (217 of 227 Xbox 360s were "non-functioning", and 167 of 205 PS3s), but, more importantly, that a "large quantity" of them came with something extra: sensitive personal information.

Friends lists. Photos. Videos. Sexy home videos. Arcade games. Credit card details.

The facility discovered this while repairing the damaged consoles. They'd fix them, turn them on, test their network connectivity, then suddenly start receiving friend requests, chat requests, game invites, etc. What's more, with the user details still recorded on the system, they could have easily purchased game content on an unsuspecting former owner's credit card.

It's a massive compromise of personal information. And while, yes, in the first instance these people should have been more aware of their data, it was a dick move on Circuit City's part to not erase the data before selling it on to a third party.

The lessons here? Don't trust big business to do something you should really do yourself! Especially when it involves your credit card details. And home videos of you riding the missus like a naughty donkey.

<![CDATA[Tales Of Horror From The Circuit City Liquidation]]> While the closure of Circuit City may mean excellent (and not so excellent) deals on video games and electronics, it can also mean buyer remorse. Especially when one considers the "All sales are final" policy.

Reader John tells us his tale of nonreturnable woe, a massive disappointment to the tune of $7.50.

"I went into Circuit City today to capitalize on their misfortune, and saw a copy of Resident Evil 4 for PS2 on sale for $7.50. Upon waiting in the checkout line, I saw a sign that said, 'All sales are final.' I figured it was fine, because, for seven bucks, you couldn't go wrong. Well, you could."

John continues. "I got home and opened my purchase to see this monstrosity of a game disc. Also I can't play or return it. All I have to say is: 'Shit.'"

Buyer beware. And if anyone sees "Danny"—who probably also returned a no-longer-working paper shredder to the same Circuit City—make sure to give him the world's most painful charlie horse. He deserves it.

<![CDATA[No Love Among the Ruins of Circuit City]]> A storewide liquidation always summons one's buzzard instinct. One imagines the goods strewn about like carrion on the desert floor, practically there for the taking. Not so at Circuit City.

Circuit City's in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy which means all its assets are being sold off. That includes the in-store stock. But rolling up on the scene of the Circuit City nearest me on Thursday, it's hard to say anything is being priced to move. Thirty percent is the largest discount offered, and that's for electronics and other large items. For video games, it's just 10 percent. (Addendum: For controllers and accessories, it's 30 percent.) I have no idea if this is going to be a progressive thing, and as the sell-off drags on the discounts get steeper.

My guess is that video games are like the conflict diamonds of this industry — cheap to store and transport with robust secondary market demand for them. So Circuit City's gonna try to bleed as close to full price off of consumers and then when that doesn't work, sell them in lots to places like Gamefly, Blockbuster, or Gamestop, and pay creditors that way.

That really shot to hell my hopes and intentions of grabbing up any old, good titles I never played the first go around. No offense to Capcom (literally across the street) but $25 for Dead Rising wasn't whoa-gotta-buy-that price point. Plus, the quality of the rest of the selection was typical Circuit City crap. I've never seen so many copies of All Pro Football 2K8.

So I decided to pick out a dozen or so games and compare this storewide closeout bonanza against the competitors that drove it into the grave: the nearest Best Buy and Gamestop (down in Redwood City) and then the prices offered by Amazon.com and Half.com. I tried to look at games that represented a range of gamer and consumer interest, from sophisticated to undiscerning.

These pictures are of the games themselves I looked at, taken with my iPhone. The remaining staff, I might add, is in fuck-it mode. I overheard one telling another that the boss said not to bother refiling the games or movies alphabetically because after all, what's the point? (Indeed, four copies of Halo 2 were over in the PS3 racks.) So for once in my life, I was behaving weirdly inside the games section of a Circuit City and not treated like a shoplifter.

Of course we know how this is going to end: don't waste your gas driving to Circuit City for just a 10 percent discount. But along the way, we can see that Circuit City's going out of business about the same way it operated its business — with bad selection and beatable prices.

Need for Speed: Carbon
Release date: Oct. 2006
Metacritic score: 77
Circuit City discounted price: $17.99 ($19.99)
GameStop price: $16.99 (used)
Best Buy price: $19.99
Amazon price: $19.49
Half.com price with shipping: $14.48

This was in a box full of games they claim ranged in price from $9 up to $19. (I never saw any $9 games). If anything deserved to be sold for less than $10, a three-year old underwhelming racer is it.

Army of Two:
Release date: March 2008
Metacritic score: 74
Circuit City discounted price:$26.99 ($29.99)
GameStop price: Unavailable, store or web.
Best Buy price: $29.99 (web)
Amazon price: $29.99
Half.com price with shipping: $24.48

Is there some kind of Army of Two price-fixing cartel out there? Although I guess that half off the original price a year after release is pretty standard. Which is fine for other stores, and if I actually wanted this, I'm probably gonna pick it up there, not Circuit City.

Facebreaker
Release date: Sept. 2008
Metacritic score: 53
Circuit City discounted price: $44.99 ($49.99)
GameStop price: $19.99
Best Buy price: $19.99 (web)
Amazon price: $19.99
Half.com price with shipping: $16.49

This is hands down the WTF deal of the day. Let's see, I can buy a terrible game from a failed retailer for $45 or I can go get it for less than half that from its other not-going-out-of-business competitors. Actually, third option, I can not buy the thing at all. Think I'll choose that. Circuit City needs to price this to MOVE, although I doubt it would even at a dollar ninety-five.

Legendary
Release date: Nov. 2008
Metacritic score: 50
Circuit City discounted price: $26.99 ($29.99)
GameStop price: $29.99
Best Buy price: $59.99
Amazon price: $29.99
Half.com price with shipping: $33.58 (Note: some yo-yo in Ohio is trying to sell this for $68.39. Good luck with that, sir.)

Hooray! This is the one game where Circuit City's super going out of business bonanza actually beats all competitors' prices! Too bad you get this turd.

Rock Band (game only)
Release date: Nov. 2007
Metacritic score: 92
Circuit City discounted price: $53.99 ($59.99)
GameStop price: $29.99 (used)
Best Buy price: $59.99
Amazon price: $56.99
Half.com price with shipping: $33.49
So, let's say I've got Rock Band 2 and want to snag Rock Band for its songs. That's reasonable, right? Whoops, everyone is still selling it (new anyway) at full friggin' price. Circuit City shaves a whole six bucks off, mighty big of them. This really should be priced down around the track pack level, otherwise, what's the point?

Bioshock (Platinum Hits version)
Release date: Aug. 2007
Metacritic score: 96
Circuit City discounted price: $26.99 ($29.99)
GameStop price: $24.99 (used)
Best Buy price: $29.99
Amazon price: $23.99
Half.com price with shipping: $23.48

and

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Platinum Hits version)
Release date: March 2006
Metacritic score: 94
Circuit City discounted price: $26.99, ($29.99)
GameStop price: $24.99 (used)
Best Buy price: unavailable, store or web.
Amazon price: $29.99
Half.com price with shipping: $20.49 (Like New)

These are both fabulous games. They're also packaged in a box that plainly touts the fact they're more than a year old. If I haven't played it by now, I need some inducement to try. Like an OMFG price that makes me think I got a misprinted tag. $25 is still I'll-get-to-it-later territory.

Lego Batman
Release date: Sept. 2008
Metacritic score: 75
Circuit City discounted price: $44.99 ($49.99)
GameStop price: Unavailable, store or web.
Best Buy price: $49.99 (web)
Amazon price: $36.99
Half.com price with shipping: $34.48
It's not a bad game, and it's still fresh, but I didn't come here looking to spend $45 on one title I'm more inclined to rent. Again, Circuit City, you want to liquidate this stuff, do so.

MotorStorm (Greatest Hits version)
Release date: 82
Metacritic score: March 2007
Circuit City discounted price: $26.99 ($29.99)
GameStop price: Unavailable, store or web.
Best Buy price: $19.99
Amazon price: $27.99
Half.com price with shipping: $18.98

and

Resistance: Fall of Man
Release date: Nov. 2006
Metacritic score: 86
Circuit City discounted price: $26.99 ($29.99)
GameStop price: $26.99
Best Buy price: $29.99
Amazon price: $27.99
Half.com price with shipping: $24.37

Two games that could conceivably be riding the coattails of their sequels, released this past fall. Instead, Circuit City's acting like it's going to be around tomorrow when you change your mind and decide to come back.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Release date: Sept. 2008
Metacritic score: 70
Circuit City discounted price: $53.99 ($59.99)
GameStop price: $59.99
Best Buy price: $59.99
Amazon price: $56.99
Half.com price with shipping: $43.49

and

U R Mr GaySuper Mario Galaxy
Release date: Nov. 2007
Metacritic score: 97
Circuit City discounted price: $44.99 ($49.99)
GameStop price: $49.99
Best Buy price: $49.99 (web)
Amazon price: $46.99
Half.com price with shipping: $38.49

Big names on both of these naturally mean high price tags. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was the only game above $50 not behind glass at Circuit City. In about three months people might start to find this offered at a price somewhat commensurate to its value. Too bad Circuit City won't be around then. Super Mario World is nearing 18 months old and its price tag at a fire sale still shows original MSRP.

Kung-Fu Panda
Release date: June 2008
Metacritic score: 70
Circuit City discounted price: $44.99 ($49.99)
GameStop price: $39.99 (web, used)
Best Buy price: $39.99
Amazon price: $27.99
Half.com price with shipping: $25.36

An average adaptation of one of last summer's most overshadowed movies going for nearly $20 more than you can get it online. I'm willing to bet any amount of Mike Fahey's money that this never leaves the store. Call me up if you want to take that action, Circuit City. And Fahey.

<![CDATA[The Scene Inside Circuit City: "Close to Pandemonium"]]> "Consumers seemingly snapping up anything that wasn't nailed down. (I've never seen so many HP wide-screen monitors in one checkout line)," according to CNET. The lines? Almost as long as Fry's — for once.

Other scenes from one store caught up in Circuit City's everything-must-go demise:

• "The store that I visited on Saturday had been taken over lock, stock, and barrel by the liquidator." The store manager said she answered to the liquidation company now, not anyone from Circuit City.

• "Consumers swarming everywhere: every one of them with at least a few breathless questions and scant employees to provide answers."

• "One male employee in the section I was browsing, spent most of the time I was there (about 15 minutes) pleading ignorance and searching for a manager who never (apparently) materialized."

Anyone been out to their local Circuit City? I hear the deals they're offering aren't as awesome as you might expect from a liquidation. That and, frankly, the fact they're getting rid of everything a month after everyone blew out their credit cards on Christmas makes me wonder just what they'll manage to get out of this. But people are showing up to pick over the bones at least.

<![CDATA[Rest In Peace, Circuit City]]> After closing 155 stores and filing for bankruptcy last year, the nation's second largest electronics retailer Circuit City is now planning to liquidate its remaining 567 U.S. stores.

The troubled company had been trying to find a buyer or secure financing in order to stay afloat, but today they announced that their last-ditch attempts had failed.

"This is the only possible path for our company," James A. Marcum, acting chief executive, said in a statement. "We are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

The closing of the remaining 567 stores could mean unemployment for another 30,000 Americans at a time when being unemployed is not something you want to be. It's also another blow to the nation's malls, as the closures will result in a flood of empty big box retail locations in an economy where no one is in a position to fill them.

"It will bring to market a glut of big box spaces across the country," said John Bemis, head of Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.'s retail leasing team. "It will have one of the largest impacts on big box real estate across the country."

Troubling news indeed. Our condolences to those who will be left jobless in the wake of the closures. We wish them the best of luck in finding gainful employment elsewhere.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Officially Desperate, Offering $40 HD/Controller Combo]]> Circuit City might be reading Chapter 11, but that means deals for you. It's offering 20 GB 360 hard drives, and a controller, for $40. Recent Arcade buyers can round out their console for cheap.

If you bought an Arcade, Microsoft's enticing you with a $99 "starter pack" that gives you a 60GB new drive, three months of Xbox Live and other stuff. This is $50 less, which might be the right price for gamers not interested in multiplayer.

The listing says it's "your chance to get a great deal on left over promotional items." So this is stock that's been sitting around forever, won't sell otherwise, and they've priced it to move because they need any dough they can get for it.

Hey, I try not to dole out free ads, but that one definitely caught my eye. Essential hardware, even refurbished, sold at rock bottom is a pretty good tip.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Files For Bankruptcy, Owes $898 Million]]> Given Circuit City's recently publicized downsizing and rumored credit concerns it probably won't come as a surprise that the situation is dire enough for the electronics and software retailer for them to file for bankruptcy protection. If that was out of the blue, aren't you glad we prefaced the announcement with how unsurprising it would be? Now you won't be shocked(!) to learn that Circuit City has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Circuit City owes close to $900 million to its vendors, which a $1.1 billion loan will help pare down. Speaking of paring down, CC will also be shedding another 700 employees, on top of the thousands already hit by the axe, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company's stock, in turn, tumbled further.

WSJ also reports that the U.S. of A's second largest electronics retailer owes over $118 million to HP alone, with a $60 million bill to PlayStation manufacturer Sony also unpaid.

The silver lining to this economic nightmare and the reality of thousand of out of work retail employees is that you'll save 10, maybe 20 percent on all sorts of goods, from video games to consoles to electronic gizmos. Their massive misfortune is your marginal gain!

<![CDATA[Closing Circuit City Game Discounts]]> As we've reported Circuit City, deep in a rut and fighting to stay alive, is closing 155 of their stores. What's that mean to you? Video game discounts of course, if there's a closing store near you.

A Circuit City employee sent in an email last night to tell us she spent yesterday at her store running around slapping discount signs on everything. She also happened to handle all of the discount signage for the video game department. Here's the of discounts for today:

Systems (360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP) and their respective games - 5% off
All game accessories (controllers, batteries, cases, Xbox Live memberships, etc) - 10% off
"Social" games (aka Rockband and Guitar Hero) - 10% off
PC Games - 10% off
Strategy guides and cheat books - 20% off

Yeah, kinda crap. But maybe it will drop more as the days roll by. Hit the jump for the full list of stores closing to see if one near you is on the cutting block.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Closes 155 Stores]]> Following the weekend rumor that Sony had nixed delivery of electronic goodies to Circuit City amid credit concerns comes the official notice today that the electronics retailer is in deep financial woes.

The company announced today that they plan to shut down 155 of their stores and cut back on future store opening. While the press release doesn’t mention Sony by name it does touch on the bigger issue of getting stock.

“Additionally, the recent disruption in the financial markets has contributed to certain of the company's vendors experiencing insurmountable challenges with obtaining credit insurance for the company's purchases. As a result of this and other considerations, certain of the company's vendors have set more restrictive payment terms than in previous quarters, including in some cases requiring payment before shipment. Vendors also have limited the credit available to the company for purchases, including in some cases not providing customary increases in credit lines for holiday purchases. While management is working diligently to secure the support of its vendors and believes it has maintained good relationships with these important partners, the current mix of terms and credit availability is becoming unmanageable for the company.”

I’ve contacted SCEA for comment and will make sure to update the story if and when we hear word about whether Sony really did stop delivery of merchandise in transit to Circuit City distribution centers.

<![CDATA[Sony Merch Bound for Circuit City Makes U-Turn [Updated]]]> Gizmodo had this jaw dropper yesterday: "Sony's merchandise that was being delivered to nationwide Circuit City distribution centers was stopped in transit and ordered to return to Sony 'among worries that Circuit City couldn't pay for the shipments.' " Giz attributes the tip to one of its reliable inside sources.

What's this mean for you? Until Circuit City convinces Sony its credit is good, no more Sony stock on the floor, certainly nothing new. Very interesting, if true. I went to a CC yesterday to get a wireless DualShock for the PS3. They had one left. Last! I got last! Incidentally, that store is hiring.

Doesn't sound like a good career move, though. GamePolitics points out this could be the killing blow. Back in September, an analyst warned:

We believe a Circuit City bankruptcy has become a question of "when" rather than "if." We now expect bankruptcy in 2009, perhaps as early as the 1Q. The wild card in the equation remains vendors. If one major vendor were to cut off Circuit City, we would expect others to quickly follow suit...[emphasis added]

Update: Reader Hahnchen found this story in Allentown, Pa., about a sinkhole closing down a Circuit City distribution center. Coincidental enough to this rumor that it could be connected to it, but the story doesn't mention anything about Sony trucks, and Gizmodo's tip covered Sony shipments to all distribution centers. Can't smash it, but very interesting.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Taking HD DVD Trades For PlayStation 3s]]> This week there's been a juicy rumor that Circuit City is taking back HD DVD players in exchange for Blu-ray players. Now our sister site Gizmodo has confirmed it from a variety of sources. If you purchased an HD DVD player—even if opened—in the last 90 days at Circuit City, you can turn in your HD DVD player for original credit on a Blu-ray player purchase.

Given that the Xbox 360's HD DVD player should be applicable and that one Giz reader used the deal to acquire a new PS3, there are some interesting possibilities for those looking to ditch brand loyalty in the interest of new media standards. Given that this is a completely unadvertised promotion, expect to haggle in some locations. And Circuit City, consider yourself officially on our cool list for the remainder of the day. You're penciled in under "Burt Reynolds."

<![CDATA[Lost Planet 360 on the Cheap at Circuit City]]> If you have been lagging on checking out the frozen landscapes and giant bugs of Lost Planet now is your chance to do it cheap! This week Circuit City is listing Capcom's Lost Planet (360 version) for the low, low price of $19.99. According to the pages I checked, the offer is only available through the website and not available for in-store pick up but you may want to check your local store just to make sure. I must admit I am way behind the tip on this game, but I just got a copy for the PS3 that I am anxious to try out. My skills with shooters have improved vastly since BioShock so perhaps I can get through this one without too much embarrassment.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Expanding Used Game Sales]]> Circuit City isn't doing well when compared to the current success of the software world. But they have a plan. Over the last year, the company has run a trial testing the waters of selling used games. And they found that the plan worked out pretty well, increasing in-store foot traffic while creating a commodity with a higher profit margin than new games. Now they plan to expand the program.

By the end of this month, they will have 25 stores supporting used game sales. And by the end of this year, that number will grow to somewhere between 50 and 60. Given enough time, that number could grow as high as 689 stores (the total number of Circuit Cities in the US and Canada). That's not exactly enough to thwart GameStop's 4,700 storefront monopoly, but a little retail competition never hurt anyone.

<![CDATA[Cicuit City: 20% Off All DS games]]> This week's Circuit City ad is advertising 20% off on all DS games. They claim over one hundred titles are available, but as we all know from actually shopping these sales, the ones actually available in the store are rarely near the advertised numbers. Some of the highlights include Phantom Hourglass for $27.99 and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice For All for $14.99. In the same ad they also list Wii's in stock so head on over to Circuit City for a Nintendo shopping spree.

<![CDATA[Cobalt Blue and Black DS Lite On the Way?]]> Rumors have been flying about for some time that we here in the US would be getting a cobalt blue DS and it looks like they might well turn out to be true. GoNintendo reported seeing a pre-order page on CircuitCity.com displaying a cobalt and black DS Lite similar in style to the red and black that came out not too long ago. The listing has since been removed but the memory of it has DS color junkies champing at the bit. Word on the tubes is that the new color will be landing in the US sometime in the first part of February. Rumor? Fact? Cruel joke? Only time will tell!

<![CDATA[Nintendo: Wiis Hit Shelves This Weekend]]> target_logo.jpg

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed today what we first broke earlier this week, Best Buy and six other national retailers will be stocking Wii this weekend. And by stocking I mean they will be advertising the console in their weekly circulars (except Wal-Mart) and then throwing the consoles up on the shelves come the weekend and then running away.

Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Toys R Us and Circuit City are all stocking the Wii this weekend for those still on the hunt. We had several tips after our rumor story ran about the stock issue.

According to Best Buy tipsters it sounds like all stores will have at least 21 of the consoles with some carrying as many as 100. I've also heard that Best Buy is expecting a second shipment next week which is supposed to go straight to shelves. Most stores will get them sometimes before noon. The bad news is that rumor has it that that will be the last pre-Christmas shipment for Best Buy, though they expect more in early January.

Target, another tipster tells me, has a big stockpile as well, some stores have more than 100. So this weekend sounds like your best chance to pick up a Wii, unless you don't mind buying a raincheck.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Game Deals]]> Man, the game deals are just coming out of the woodwork today. CheapAssGamer informs us that Circuit City has three deals going on this week in the games department. First, Save $20 when you purchase any two Wii games $29.99 and up (Not as good as the TRU deal but it's something). Second, get a $10 gift card with the purchase of Mario Party DS (Is it just me or does the concept of a party game on the DS seem a little odd?). And last but not least, get a $10 gift card when you buy Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the PS3.

The Uncharted deal is probably the best one of the lot, but while you're there, you might as well peruse the Wii section as well. Never know what will be lurking around in there plus there's liable to be less screaming children there than in Toys R Us.

<![CDATA[Circuit City Offers COD3 with Purchase of COD4]]> A nice little present for Call of Duty fans. In Circuit City's weekly ad, they are advertising an offer of a free copy of Call of Duty 3 when you purchase a copy of Call of Duty 4. Also included in the deal is a Call of Duty 4 poster. Great opportunity to fill out your collection if you missed out on the last title or need something to hang over that hole in your wall where you punched it. (I'm looking at YOU, Crecente)
