<![CDATA[ Legend of Chun Li Missing Ryu And Ken But Will Have Buns ]]> If you've been passively following upcoming Hollywood flick Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, you've probably already realized that Ryu and Ken are not characters in the film. Why is that? Hrm. According to the movie's producer Patrick Aiello, the filmmakers and Capcom decided to have this film focus on the origin of Chun-Li. Continuing, Aiello adds:

There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film. We want to do each one the justice he/she deserves. So, in short, Ken and Ryu will not be appearing in this film. But, that doesn’t mean we wont see our red and white-clad heroes in potential sequels...

If this Chun-Li flick does decent business, just watch as Capcom goes sequel silly. (Not that it's ever done that in the past!) The film's producer does offer interesting insights on how they plan on adapting Street Fighter to the silver screen and stay true to the game's roots:

Now, as a result of this approach, it’d be silly to put Neal McDonough’s Bison in a bright red suit and captain’s hat with a pair of humongous shoulder pads. It works great in the video game, but in real life, it just wouldn’t look intimidating. The same can be said for Balrog. He’s an enforcer. A killer. A take-no-shit brawler to the core. And so, how scary would he be on screen if he beat people up with boxing gloves and a pair of blue short-shorts?

All that said, do not worry. We haven’t turned a blind eye on the game we all know and love. At some point, Chun Li will sport her trademark buns (the ones in her HAIR!) and of course, Vega’s still got the mask and claw, for starters.

Regarding the tone, I’m pleased to say we are certainly not going for camp or cheese or any kind of laughs. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into the making of this film, and, you’re gonna see a lot of those ON film as well.

If it's done well, people should give the filmmakers room to breathe. It's been that way with comic book films in the past — like look at the respectful liberties Sam Raimi took with Spider-Man.

<![CDATA[ Variety Tries Dating Street Fighter IV ]]> Since we don't know when Street Fighter IV's getting released, Variety's game blog The Cut Scene offers up guesstimation when the game is coming out. And hey! It's a pretty obvious, albeit logical, one. According to the Cut Scene:

Here's a wild guess: Variety recently reported that Fox will release the "Street Fighter" movie in the U.S. on Feb. 27, 2009. I'd say right around then makes a lot of sense.

Not only is that a big promotional event for the franchise, but Capcom is an investor in the movie. While I'm sure it hopes to make money on the film, it's obviously investing those millions in part to try and revive public interest in "Street Fighter." As such, Capcom would be crazy to not take advantage of the big (by videogame standards) promotional push Fox will be putting behind the release of "Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li" and have its game on store shelves at the same time.

If by some chance Capcom just can't get the game out by then, around the movie's DVD release (probably in late spring) would be the next logical time to expect it.

Makes sense! And if not spring, then late fall — just in time for Christmas.

<![CDATA[ Chun-Li's Nose Hairs Now Available For Your Viewing Pleasure ]]> The official Capcom blog confirms what we posted yesterday, that filthy faced Kristin Kreuk is indeed doing her best Chun-Li impersonation in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. They've killed us in the resolution department though, offering up a massive 4368 x 2912 pic of Kreuk in scowl mode. As the official blog writes, it's "perfect for printing and smooching", as well as determining whether one would "hit it" if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, we have yet to see how sharp her knees are, a very important consideration.

What we did find more interesting than the deep insight into Chun-Li's pores was the (potentially spoiler-ish) jewelry she's rocking.

Spinning bird necklace?! It would appear so. We can't wait for the pausable DVD Blu-ray release fun that awaits us on our lonelier nights.

<![CDATA[ First Look At Kristin Kreuk As Chun-Li? ]]> Capcom of Japan released the above photo today from the in-production Street Fighter movie, giving us what appears to be our first, heavily artifacted glimpse of Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. It's not the traditional blue outfit we're used to seeing Chun-Li sporting, but she has to put that thing in the wash sometime. Of course, Capcom may simply have a cache of photos of Kreuk looking dirty and disheveled for times like this, so consider this unconfirmed until we get confirmation from Capcom.

<![CDATA[ Street Fighter Film Writer Won't "Blatantly Sexualize" Chun-Li ]]> Justin Marks, writer of the Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li film, is aware that most gamers have wanted to wed Chun-Li (and possibly worse) since we were yay high, but it looks like we can expect a dignified treatment of the leading lady, played by Smallville actress Kristin Kreuk.

But... but what about the infamous anime shower scene?

No, this is actually a good moment to mention something about Chun-Li's depiction in the movie. Basically there are two factors at work. First, I've never seen a successful action movie (in my mind) that blatantly sexualized its female lead and succeeded for its audience. Catwoman, Elektra, the list goes on and on, and I just get a lot of eye-rolling. Then I think back to The Terminator, or possibly my all-time favorite movie, Aliens, and I think of how Ripley is depicted in that film. She's a tough woman, but not because she came from a place of wearing tight pants and beating up men. She's tough because she had this core emotional story about a life that could have been and never was. To me, that's the way you write a woman in these kinds of movies.

The interviewer actually appears to have enjoyed the Dead or Alive film, classily stating, "I heard that movie was so good every girl that saw that film on the big screen left the cinema pregnant."

But Marks actually has higher expectations for the Street Fighter flick:

Ah yes. Dead or Alive. Another reason why these game adaptations are so beloved...

Hopefully Street Fighter sets a new standard. I certainly believe it will. It's a game adaptation that takes itself seriously, because the material actually deserves to be taken seriously for those of us who were paying attention to the story and the anime series. Of course, there are those out there who just believe Street Fighter is lots of kicking and Hadoukens, and they'll be pleased too because there's plenty of fight sequences. And the fight scenes don't disappoint. I was lucky enough to see a few of them when I was out there a few weeks ago, and Dion Lam, the fight choreographer, has come up with some incredible stuff akin to his work in the Matrix movies.

Perhaps the key to making a decent film adaptation of a video game is developing an understanding of what the material means to its audience - Chun-Li fandom is adoring, not exploitive. At least, that's what I like to think!

<![CDATA[ There Are Talks of MORE Street Fighter Movies ]]> They're still making the Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li flick, and yet, there's already talks of sequels! The film's scribe Justin Marks, who's also adapting Voltron and HE-MAN for the silver screen, says:

There are always plans [for sequels]. We've seen this as being a really drawn-out way to explore the Street Fighter world. Start small, then go bigger and bigger, bringing in more characters and eventually spinning it horizontally to explore other threads and origin stories.

Meaning if this movie does halfway decent, we can possibly look forward to the likes of Street Fighter: The Legend of Ryu, Street Fighter: The Legend of Guile and Street Fighter: The Legend of Dan. They probably should've started with Dan. You can only go up!

<![CDATA[ Meditations Upon Chun-Li ]]> chunli.pngDestructoid dares to ask the question: "Is Chun-Li a post-op transsexual?" Hard hitting and thought provoking, to be sure, but, you know. Meh. Her hands are big? yarly.

But it's as good a jumpoff for me to reminisce about the intersection of Street Fighter, my fraternity in college, and a case study in cognitive dissonance.

This happened back at N.C. State, where I was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon's Beta-Beta chapter. Names have been changed to protect the ashamed, but the frat nicknames are, I swear to God, real. Here goes.

Around 1993, everyone was playing one of two games on their Genesises or Super Nintendoes — Street Fighter or a college football ripoff game that called us "STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA" to skirt NCAA licensing rules. But I digress. Everyone knew Street Fighter is the point, and everyone got their asses handed to them by Evil E, Ton O' Fun, Big Al, or Strap-On, almost always playing Chun-Li or Ken.

My roommate, Queef, and I lived next door on the front hall to a brother, Guy, who was about as shady as they come. Like a few years later, the State Bureau of Investigation was looking into the fact he and some others signed up for free Columbia House CDs under a dog's name, and some other identity shit. In fact, one night we heard a "business partner" stop by and threaten Guy within an inch of his life over, I guess, money that was owed. So Guy had a rep for moving with unclean company, that's important.

One day, and I forget how this unfolded, but Guy's roommate, Cooter, dragged me and Queef into their room to play their answering machine. Cooter got home from class before Guy, hit play, and heard a startling threat from, apparently, a Korean gangster. There was a demand for money, an ultimatum of bodily harm, and a meeting place and time: "[REDACTED] THIS IS ... CHUN LI ... YOU MEET ME ... ELEVEN THIRTY AT ... HOUSE O' PANCAKES ...!"

It was an utterly ridiculous, cartooned, even racist voice, but at the time, none of us had ever lived outside North Carolina. So we fucking fell for it. Cooter and I actually drove out to the IHOP on Hillsborough Street to stake out the encounter, following our chapter rule: "The object is not to fuck your brother, but to get your brother fucked."

Even though intercourse was not on the menu of options, we figured allowing Guy to be murdered by a Korean gangster out to collect a bad debt fell into guilty knowledge or passive allowance of fucking over a brother.

So away we went. We even bought 12-inch sandwiches from Sadlack's Heroes to gnaw on while we waited in the car, the two biggest shithead cops on a two-hour stakeout ever. And neither Guy nor any Korean mafiosi showed up.

And when we got back, Ray White Trash and Grape Ape copped to leaving the prank message.

Evil E said, "I knew it was fake. The Korean language does not produce words that sound anything like Chun Li. That's specifically Chinese."

Gee thanks, asshole.

For the record, my fraternity nickname was Fellatiowen.

It went something like this: Michael Clarke Duncan ("Balrog"), Chris Klein ("Charlie Nash"), Rick Yune (Chun-Li's trainer) and Kristin Kreuk ("Chun Li"). While we also knew that the Black Eyed Peas' Taboo would be joining the cast, we didn't know which role he'd be taking. Stars Michael Clarke Duncan and Chris Klein, and Rick Yune will be joining Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li. Duncan, who you may remember as Kingpin from Daredevil (ugh) will be playing the part of Balrog, who doesn't know how to kick. The unnaturally pretty Chris Klein will be playing Nash, which is the original Japanese name for Guile's war buddy Charlie. In the role of the elderly master assassin Gen who trained Chun Li briefly in her youth will be Rick Yun, who I remember as Johnny Tran in The Fast and the Furious, and who is also playing Edward Carnby in Alone in the Dark II (double ugh.) Rounding out the cast is Journeyman's Moon Bloodgood (hopefully Cammy!), the Black Eyed Peas' Taboo (maybe Dee Jay?), Singapore's Edmund Chen (possible Ryu?), and Hong Kong star Cheng Pei Pei - Jade Fox from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The filmmakers are still searching for the perfect Bison. Unfortunately he died fourteen years ago.

Guess that squashes those rumors that Jessica Biel will play Chun-Li. It's about the best we could have hoped for, given that Kreuk seems to be able to act. I'm basing this solely on the fact that she's been nominated for "best actress" in the Teen Choice Awards. Given that she's half-Chinese, according to her IMDB profile, makes the casting news even easier to swallow. Hopefully, the thigh prosthetics/computer generated effects will be believable.

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li will be directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak of Doom and Exit Wounds infamy.

<![CDATA[ Street Fighter Script Reviewed ]]> otakon073.jpg The original Street Fighter with Jean-Claude Van Damme was all kinds of suck. That hasn't stopped Capcom from green-lighting another SF flick. While the previous venture featured tons of characters from the game, the new flick revolves around one character: Chun-Li. Yup, no Guile, no Ken and no Ryu. Here's the plot in a duck press: Chun-Li's father works for Bison, who then kidnaps her dad when she's a little girl. She grows up, trains and goes after Bison. Balrog and Vega show up. It takes place in Hong Kong. There are minions. The end. Sounds like every other revenge film ever!

The script is by Justin Marks, who has penned the Voltron flick. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The folks over at movie site Latino Review seem to think the Street Fighter screenplay is alright — well, compared to other game adaptations. According to Latino Review:

Now if they choose to go with this script they could have the potential of breaking the mold of the videogame movie and actually have a franchise. Whoever plays Chun-Li will have a monster role in her hands. The script could have had a few more recognizable good or bad guys but, once again thinking back to the original Street Fighter movie, maybe it's not a good idea.

But Capcom should realize that by focusing only on Chun-Li, they are alienating people who are familiar with the game. Folks will sit there, waiting and wondering when their favorite character is going to make an appearance. Then again, Capcom's game plan might be to give each SF character his or her own movie. In that case, I cannot wait for the E. Honda life-story. That's a gold mine right there.

<![CDATA[ Jessica Biel? Is Chun-Li? ]]> According to film site Latino Review, early casting rumors are putting 7th Heaven and Stealth star Jessica Biel in the lead to play Chun-Li in the upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation. The movie, scheduled to appear in 2008 from Capcom and Hyde Park Entertainment, will focus on series mainstay Chun-Li and not Colonel William F. Guile like the previous Van Damme vehicle.

While there's little doubt that Jessica Biel can fill the tights of Chun-Li from a fitness standpoint, she's kind of lacking in the Chinese heritage department. And, although I think many of us would welcome Biel's attempts at acheiving Li-style thigh definition, I really hope producers do the right thing and cast a Chinese actor in the role, making this rumor just that, a rumor.

How about Cammy? Or Blanka? The furries would eat that shit up.

<![CDATA[ The Hottest Chun-Li in Ohio ]]>

Sure, CES is going full steam as I write this, but there were other conventions this weekend that were just as important. For instance, Ohayocon, the largest anime convention in Ohio! That's right, out of all the anime conventions in Ohio, I'm 75% sure this is the biggest one. I'm also willing to bet was the only place in Ohio this past weekend where you could find randomly hot Chun-Li cosplayer, complete with too-small thighs and authentic Asian heritage! Actually that's pretty rare at any anime convention. Generally the hottest girls end up being underage or guys in drag. Or possibly both.

Our friends over at GayGamer have posted a gallery of the more game related costumes from the weekend's festivities. Highlights include an amazing Katamari Damacy cosplay team, Pyramid Head from Silent Hill number 237 (collect the whole set!), Phoenix Wright, Ico, and my personal favorite, Ice Climbers! Note the awesome poses. For those of you unfamiliar with the world of cosplay, only 10% of it is making the costume. The rest is rehearsing your awesome anime pose. Check them out!

<![CDATA[ Zombie Pikachu, I Choose You! ]]>

Mmmmmm..BRAINS!

In honor of Halloween, "everything by everyone" website NewGrounds held an art contest. The rules were simple, draw your favorite video game character as a zombie. They ran it for a month and received so many sick submissions that they actually expanded the amount of winners and prizes. I saw zombie Chun-Li with her zombie nipples showing and zombie Lara Croft licking her own zombie nipples stripper style. And these weren't even the winners!

There were two first prizes: The first went to Deks for his truly terrifying zombie Pikachu while the other went to Steven-M for his Zombie Mario. Other winners included a zombie Sam Fisher, the entire zombie cast of Chrono Cross and zombie Sonic, zombie Knuckles and zombie Doctor Robotnik fighting MegaMan a la Army of Darkness.

Check out all the winners at the official contest forum. I would highly recommend checking out the entire thread and seeing all the entries. Believe me, you won't want to miss those zombie nipples!

<![CDATA[ Capcom Talks Street Fighter Movie Details ]]>

GameDaily.Biz recently chatted up Charles Belfield, the marketing head of Capcom, about their recent announcement of a new Street Fighter movie.

In the interview Belfield talks about the reasoning behind centering the new Street Fighter movie around a single character and whether that will become the norm for future SF flicks, the future of the game franchise and how Capcom plans to milk the IP with a television show and anything else they can get the kids to buy.

Just so you don't sleep soundly tonight, chances of a Street Fighter movie-game spin-off still loom.

BIZ: The original Street Fighter: The Movie spawned games featuring the digital likenesses of Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia. Will we see new games based on this film?

CB: I can confirm that we have a multi-format strategy for Street Fighter, what, when, how and why we're not talking about. Anniversaries for key franchises are important milestones in the game industry. We have a 20th Anniversary of Street Fighter in 2008 and we'll be developing a number of properties around that for the anniversary.

<![CDATA[ New Street Fighter Film Coming - Starring Chun-Li ]]>

Studios aren't willing to back the Halo movie but they'll jump on a Street Fighter movie staring some unknown Asian broad? We doubt it. But Variety says Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom are preparing for another round of Street Fighting—did anybody actually see the first? Poor Raul Julia—hiring Justin Marks as the writer.

The movie should hit theatres like a kick to the teeth in 2008, the 20th anniversary of the Street Fighter series. Now that Ming Na's a bit too old to don the tights, who do you think will star? Kelly Hu? Grace Park? Jason Chen?

<![CDATA[ Super Street Fighter Brothers ]]> YATAI!Frequent tipster and previously covered talented artiste James "Torokun" Chung updated his deviantArt gallery and fortunately Kotaku reader Garrett was nice enough to let us know about it.

Torokun's recent piece features a fantastic mash up of two groundbreaking series, Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter II, with Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach respectively. Awesome work, but I really would have loved to have seen the Blanka/Goomba blend. And, seriously, those Chun Li thighs—I know they're supposed to be big but those are FREAKY! Check out the gallery for the full-sized version.

Good work as always, James.

<![CDATA[ Chun-Li, Real Life Panty Fighter ]]>

This is the only picture we can show you on the top page (the risque NSFW stuff is after the jump). Akihabara's favorite cosplayer ANGELLINE has just released a few photo CD-ROMs that feature her dressed as Street Fighter's Chun-Li and doing an endless series of high kicks. It's not porn per se, but rather, a clinical look at her underpants. And yes, they're blue.

<![CDATA[ Street Fighter Anime Re-Released With Chun Li Jubblies ]]>

While the Japanese original is universally lauded by anime fans for being a good flick, the American version of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie gets boos for being sanitized. Out went excess violence and Chun Li's dirty pillows, in went good ol' American censorship and the film was edited down to PG-13. (Because, cartoons are for kids, right?) Anime distributor Manga Video is bringing the full, uncut version to DVD on July 18th. For impatient folks, the infamous NSFW Chun Li shower scene after the jump.
