It's funny how some are trying to take this out on the XBL Gold Subscription when the blame lies solely on Sega. Especially when this game hasn't been highly active since the first few weeks of its release.
All these PS3 fanboys are still grasping at straws.
@Dead Giveaway: Yes, because if ANYONE ever dislikes the fact that they're paying $50 a year for this and their game of choice stops supporting online, they HAVE to be PS3 fanboys. Just have to.
I never got a chance to play it, but I'm sorry to see it go. It seemed like an much more appealing take on mech combat than Armored Core's offerings. I'm surprised Sega hasn't gone back to it. Then again, they might be shutting down the servers to accommodate work on a sequel.
But anyway that game was great and to help the people wandering about the achievements, if you managed to get any in those 3.5 half years you are classed as 'god'
They were freaking awe full to attain to begin with. And for those who have/n't got a basic knowledge of this game who teams/countries fought for supplies and areas last team standing wins in those 3.5 years I would estimate 350 wars were won at the very least. If i remember correctly wars would be reset the following tues/weds of their completion with the firm/server maintenance.
I loved this game and would really of loved to have gone back to it but the community died pretty quickly and as the achievements were so hard to gain it lost appeal (for me at least) quite quickly.
My team playing skills were immense I was the Decoy, and with that title I created some of the most bizarre mechs. Ranging from full on human (mech) shields concealing my entire team behind me and me taking the full flack of enemy barrages to "WTF is that" style mech which has the liking of a large stick of rock multicoloured and everything :P
R.I.P Chromehounds, also sega you bastards you put PSO to sleep as well :@
This was a fun game till someone figured out you could build mechs with a ton of shit in front of the cockpit as in Chromehounds a destroyed a cockpit meant instant death. The mechs after that look really REALLY stupid.
Why is that someone comes up with an optimum set-up, that's all people ever use? Can't they come up with anything on their own? Or just do go with what they want?
@Kyosuke_Nanbu:
Because the problem is that unless you find a setup that works just as well you're always left with the niggling feeling that even though you're being different it'd be so much easier just to use that optimum setup.
@CitizenErased115: Indeed. Chromehounds was a great game when it showed up on the 360. Me and my friends had a ton of fun on it, and From's pretty good at making sequels. Hopefully this will be one they'll do as well.
Yeah it was amazing. I liked that at the beginning everyone including myself had giant mechs that had 3 of the dual barrel cannons then after a year everyone had these tiny super armored mechs with their cockpits super protected that were impossible to kill.
I loved playing with my friend in the night map, I'd see him barely creeping over a hill then fire and the bright flashes would illuminate everything then 5 seconds later ....huuuuuge explosions.
That's another thing I liked it had best particle effects for explosions for any game IMO.
I loved this game back in the day, especially how it handled squad communication. I'm hoping that the new Mechwarrior game will take a few cues from good ol' Chromehounds.
@AlKusanagi: Yeah. That was pre-Party Chat. It was scary when you'd be walking through a blank area with no radio and hop into the area and go... "Ok, I'm back in radio communication" and realize that you're the last person on your team.
Good times. Most of the folks I still talk to on XBL were originally from the Chromehound squad I was with. Oh, and it was the first time I got a Rep Down from someone. I guess they didn't appreciate running into a 'Double Double' RJ when they were running a hover pile spiker.
What the fuck is the point of paying for XBox Live if I can't play my XBox Live games anymore? This is retarded. I can understand this shit for PS2 games where you can't pay monthly to support MGS3's multiplayer anymore, but on XBox Live there is no reason for this kind of thing to happen.
@DaveKap: It's weird considering Microsoft is the one who supplies the servers for online play except in special cases like EA.
My guess is that either A) SEGA is supplying their own servers which would explain this piss-poor news, or B) Microsoft charges companies for their server use and SEGA, in their ultimate quest for consumer satisfaction, said "fuck it" and told MS to shut them down.
But I do agree. Stuff like this makes us look like idiots that we're paying for online (well, I don't pay for Live, at least >_>).
On a related note, how about we bring Steel Battalion back?. We get all this plastic crap, I'd gladly throw down $200 for a new controller and a current gen rendition.
Funny thing is, I bought the game for the first time a few weeks back, after YEARS of friends bitching about how wicked it was.
I swear to god I wish i listened earlier, as its seriously one of the best online games ive played. It has the same live game that Endwar did last year, and really makes for some compelling online gameplay.
Then sure enough after starting to play, i got about 5-6 other friends on board to play also, and next thing you know, we just started up a new squad and have been having a blast.
Then the news... It sucks, and I really hope sega see the appeal of the game. I think that the game came out at a time when no one was really going to buy it. It would totally sell well today if it got some decent press. Lets hope sega makes a Chromehounds II
@wirebrain: You read the part about it being SEGA's severs right? As in Sega runs them not MS? As in, this is why I like that most games on Xbox live use the "dreaded" P2P model so severs can't be just shut down.
@ThreeOneFive: But that's the problem. The game servers have always been Microsoft run. Our accounts pay to keep every single online component up and running. From Software shouldn't be paying the tab here, unlike if they did a PS3 or PS2 online game.
@wirebrain: Unlike LIVE GOLD, which is a matchmaking service with servers hosted by PLAYERS (usually the one with the strongest connection), CHROMEHOUNDS has an online LIVE game that has terrorities that can be won or lost depending on which side wins. Its updated live all day. SEGA hosts this server, not MS.
Also, CH is not the only game with non-MS controller servers. Every EA game, Phantasy Star UNiverse, Final Fantasy XI and ENDWAR all have LIVE servers that can be shut down at any time.
You pay for GOLD for a Quality of Service matchmaking system that is mostly Peer2Peer...
@wirebrain: It is, in fact it's the only way EA allowed MS to have their game run through Xbox live. Battlefield 1943 is one example of that, EA runs dedicated servers.
@-MasterDex-: Yeah, funny because it's true in a sad sort of way. People pay $50 a year pretty much only for matchmaking. The rest is handled by P2P that requires zero cost to keep going. Or in this case, people pay Microsoft $50 a year to access a server run by SEGA, who incidentally don't feel like running it anymore.
I swear, this whole "paying for online" bit makes less and less sense as each day passes.
@RockyRan: name an online service that auto connects and organizes connections to multiple peer servers to keep games lag free?
What happens when playing a regular game of CS and the server host fucks up or there is a problem with its connection? everyone lags or is booted. With LIVE, just ONE of lives features is that it will usually alleviate this lag through a number of ways (swap hosts on the fly, use others connection).
Also to people who bitch and complain about live being over simplified P2P, its not anywhere near that simple. There are many different services going on in the background that make live what it is. Matchmaking is only a small portion of "LIVE".
What about incredibly fast content server? (try downloading batman demo on PSN on thursday?) or how about voice/video chat through multiple games/servers? the 50 upkeep goes towards more then just a simple matchmaking server.
Enough with the bitching already... those of us who have multiple consoles usually dont mind paying 50 a year to make sure my game experience is bloody smooth. No offense to sony, but leaving PSN servers up to developers is a bad idea... some do it right (KZ) and some do it horribly wrong (SOCOM)... and there is no "standard". With XBL, everything is kinda set out by MS what has to go on, every game has a near lag-less experience. Where as PSN, the QoS is dependent on how much the dev wants to throw into their servers. Also means HIGHER COSTS for developers...
@Scazza: You know what's funny? You fail to realize that the "incredibly fast content server" is absolutely free for anyone to use. The only thing you pay for when you pay for Live is the online gaming, which is largely P2P based. Everything else is free and paid for partly by their other sources of revenue. Stop acting like the LIVE subscriptions support their entire online infrastructure because it doesn't.
@Scazza: P2P games rely solely on the connection of the host i.e us and therefore Live has absolutely no bearing on amount of latency, it is all dependant on our connections. All of the improvisations to stop this such as host swapping etc are all implemented by the developer themselves and still have nothing to do with the Live service.
I'm not trying to bash Live or anything (i do think it is a bit of a con but thats another matter) as i have a gold subscription but don't give the service more credit than it's due.
Chromehounds was a fantastic under-rated game. The game was a blast when you got yourself and 5 friends against another group of 6 friends. Sure it wasn't another fast-paced shooter, but its strategic gameplay and deep customization made it incredibly worthwhile.I wish this game's online wasn't dead, or I'd still be a regular player. Here's hoping for a sequel, as doubtful as that looks at the moment...

Get a clue.

Despite that ONE game that has little to zero online community (console wise) will be closed off.
If it were a PS3 or Wii title, it'd be closed all the same.
It's as simple as that.
