I've seen this in person, along with Texas A&M's version.
Both could play the game pretty well.
IIRC, it works using some national instruments hardware, a smartcam, which looks at the screen and tries to identify certain elements, defined in the software, then sends a signal to the pistons to actually hit the notes.
Texas A&M's version worked similarly, and well, it kicked my sorry arse when I tried to play against it on hard.
