Aion seems to require an heavy speced one...
It looks nice and all, but it's too "shiny" and generic for me.
If Aion has an interesting lore, I could give it a try. Even if I have to kill rats amongst a bunch of female characters in miniskirt...

Now, The reason why WoW got so many users from the get-go: They had a ton of gameplay and not only did they promise PvE / PvP, but they made them both viable.
So you can play PvP in a dungeon in Aion.. Will it be the *best* for your character to do so? What about PvE in PvP Areas? Are you maximizing your potential that way?
They'd have to design the gear and stat customization so perfectly..
I just don't have a lot of faith in this game because people will just do the math, find out whats THE BEST TO DO and beeline towards it depending on their class.
You want to design a great MMO? Then make everything universally fit together.

The perfect fit is an endless quest. Personally, I'd much rather see people trying to fit the perfect niche than the Next Big Thing.

At this point, however, I'm measuring "success" as a game that is putting up active user figures of 5-6 million and I don't think that this game is going to do that.
You're probably right about Korea though, given the game has an above average PvP system or other hardcore aspects.

1. It literally is WoW with wings. Same auction system, same flight paths, the combat mechanics, interface. I guess that is a good thing if you categorize WoW in it's own genre.
2. Environment textures and overalll polish completely fails compared to the detail of the toons + particle effects. This was on a GTX 280.
3. Flying is just a gimmick and hardly useful for casual players.
4. "Abyss" is pretty much a rehash of loot runs reminiscent of FoW runs in Guild Wars. Meh.
The biggest + is that the BGMs were created in the infamous Abbey Road Studio and the eargasm do not disappoint.
All in all, if you enjoyed WoW. You will enjoy this game. It is pretty much 1:1 with a new coat of paint.

I agree with your review, but I'd also add that the core gameplay is not as refined as it is in WoW. Mid-combat character movement and skill execution feel significantly clunkier and rubber banding (your character popping back and forth) becomes an issue with even minor lag.
Also, I'm not a huge fan of the Korean-style churn-out art that permeates 99% of the games that pop out of that peninsula, and this game is most certainly in that tired up style.

I almost want to drive down to their offices (they're only 30 minutes away) and tell them to stop trying to innovate and just make a good game.
This looks like another well designed game that is going to fall by the wayside due to being overcomplicated (from a newbie's point of view) and feeling just a bit too involved to be played casually.
(Of course, as someone who is far from a newb when it comes to MMORPGs,the game looks exciting.)

Or what about people who just don't care or like WoW at all and wouldn't buy any of it's clones?

It's not a sub class system like FFXI where you can gain abilities from another class entirely. And it's not like a Warrior will stay a pure Warrior, I don't even think they can do that. A Warrior will always become either a Templar or Gladiator....so why make the player wait?

I thought it was going to be something like, Runes Of Magic or FFXI. Very disappointing.

So if they want to sell anything, they need to do something WoW doesn't, so maybe WoW players will like that more, or people who don't like WoW at all will play this because this appeals to them.
(I'm tired of the comment system eating my spaces)

Don't get me wrong, true innovation is great but there is a big difference between features and innovation.
What I'm seeing in this video are features, cool features to be sure, but not innovation.
WoW is wildly popular for a reason and I think for another MMORPG to be as successful they need to basically make a game that is WoW +1
What I mean is, it needs to have everything WoW has plus one key feature that it doesn't.
That way, you draw the WoW crowd in AND retain them as well as capture the hearts of new players.
(And yes, the commenting system is pretty messed up right now, isn't it?)

Part of the reason I loved World of Warcraft was carving my role out, and really doing it to the best of my ability. If my role in this game is just to blow everything up, I'm worried that it will get old relatively quickly.
The character creation is fantastic, and earning ways to customize further is rather genius, but in order for the mmo teeth to sink into me I need to know I have a purpose in there. If this game can't do it then I'll have to hold out for FFXIV where I know job class is key.

One thing that's really hard to impress upon new CoH players is that "Support" ≠ "Heals" in this game. You can slow your opponents, or weaken their resistances, or blind them to lower accuracy. Similarly, you can armor your allies, increase their damage, or recharge speeds and really amplify their efficacy instead of just refilling their HP bar. These effects are much more significant and effective than in other MMO's, and straight healing is practically never necessary.
So unless the devs have completely forgotten their previous work, they've already transcended the "OMG H43Lz" issue that you speak of with their combat system.
Also, not every hero is just "Hulk SMASH" pound shit up all the time. Some like the Green Lantern, or Sue Storm don't inflict as much damage as they do disable opponents through control powers.

Oh I just have to ask though, is this still coming out for consoles? I mean, I'd love to have an MMO game on my Xbox to play, especially ones with superheroes! I couldn't play the beta on my laptop because it's really reeeeeeeeeeally gay :-(
Oh, my laptop I mean...not the game.

Wouldn't it have been smart to have one of them released around May-July this year to have an advanced grab of the audience. Stuff like Aion perhaps considering it was done?
07/15/09
It was supposed to be out several months ago, actually. They felt it wasn't polished enough so delayed the launch to allow themselves time to work on it more. They've learned the harsh lesson of releasing unfinished MMOs from other devs it seems.
