I enjoyed Umbrella chronicles much more than I thought I would. Although the bosses did my head in. I won't front: they handed me arse to me many a time!
I harbour a deep amount of love for Resident evil 2 (giant alligator attack and all ;P), but I'm not feeling the same desire to get the Darkside chronicles as I did the first game. Probably because I know it's just going to be more of the same, and I want more than that.
It's a real shame Capcom STILL haven't included online play. That would have been something that might have swayed me more into getting this game. Because frankly, when my friends and I get together - we don't really tend to sit and play games. And on the occasions we do, we stick on a beat 'em up.
It'll be interesting to see how Capcom handle the Code: Veronica scenario's. Given Claire and Steve were rarely ever together in the game, and the only hint of the two of them having 'something' was when [SPOILER!!!!!] Steve died.
I loved Umbrella Chronicles but I thought it was hard as shit. Never had a friend available to play with. Can't wait to get my hands on this game. Should be tons of fun.
I'm not quiet sure the complaint about the same few types of zombies attacking is really a fault of the Wii. RE5 only ever had a handful of enemy models in each area that were constantly recycled, it was obvious by the end of 1-1 in RE5 <_<
I'm still going to try and get this some time, but I've got to play catchup in the upcoming months.
Hopefully this will be a game that will lower in price after a few months. A couple of games I've been waiting on still haven't cheapened, but that's probably because of their quality and sales.
Personally, shooting everything is helping to keep it fun for me and the wife. Great filler for the often terribly slow and plodding pacing. I guess we don't take the atmosphere very seriously though. Nailing that lamp on the wall (first) while the camera swings wildly is often harder than nailing the zombies.
My personal favorite improvement over Umbrella Chronicles is the ability to upgrade the handgun. We've upgraded nothing else so far and we're probably more than 2/3rds through our first run.
@Rirath: That's awesome to hear about the handgun. The one thing that bothered me constantly in Umbrella Chronicles was eventually running out of ammo in boss battles and having to resort to the weak handgun and constantly tapping the B button to end it.
@Atomsk88: Yeah, it's never going to be an SMG or a magnum, but I'm really enjoying powering it up. You can improve Power, Rate of Fire, Reload Speed, Capacity, and Stopping Power (knockback, I think).
All to pretty good levels. Not all S ranks (sadly), but (spoilers if you don't want to know upgrade limits -------------) we've maxed power to B and rate of fire to A. We're going for capacity and reload speed now.
I picked this up recently and I love it - the best part is being able to laugh at all the cheesiness of the Resident Evil series; I've always loved its goofy dialogue and 'its a serious situation but let's crack one-liners' tone (that's probably why I didn't care for RE5's 'everyone must take me seriously because I'm a serious game' approach to the series.) It nice to see RE2 with updated graphics and why Capcom hasn't remade it in the vein of RE1 and RE0 - hell if they added the camera to be like RE4/RE5 they'd pull in even the new fans, though a 'classic camera' would be a must - still confuses me, I think most (but not all) would agree RE2 is the series best, why not capitalize on that? Great light gun game, buy this if you're a Wii owner and especially if you're an RE fan.
@Alexander-the-Supernaut: I thought RE5 Wesker was pure cheese. It had a lot of that over earnest un-intentional humour. The female antagonist was a cheesy caricature as well.
@kingmanic: I suppose Wesker was cheesy wasn't he - but I think the protagonists lost a lot of the 'why did they just say that?' humour. Remember RE4, Leon would toss out terrible one liners every chance he had. Though, I suppose you are right about the villains having that unnecessary over-the-topness to them, maybe they saved the day when it came to RE's campy style, maybe they are the true heroes in RE5.
It's good to hear that destructible scenery has made a comeback! I know it was listed as a negative in the review but I love the whole 'hidden collectible' thing in Umbrella chronicles. I felt it was a means to allow some dialogue and story progression without forcing you to sit idly by waiting for the next enemy to pop out. Getting bored during a talky bit? Shoot the lights/windows/paintings. Certainly helped me after several playthroughs!
This and Muramasa have forced my hand. Time to get a Wii.
@arrow_six: This is forcing my hand as well, not to get a wii (i have one) but to bring it to college if i have to build myself a TV, and rip the console from my brother and tell him to "STFU, it's my damn console".
Already have it, Already Love it. Going over to my friend's to play it on an HD cause my simple little SD makes it look bad.
Also, I've noticed they make the camera sway a lot more than I remember in RE:UC, I'm convinced it's a simple, yet effective way to increase the tension and difficulty. Make your screen act scared even if you aren't. I can't count the number of head-shots I've missed because of this little detail.
The playing as Leon and Krauser is awesome sounding. But yeah that 'scripted' event was a bit crap. Surely they would leave something like that for when a zombie gets too close to you? Look great though, unfortunatly Dead Space did so much more with 'on-rails' #residentevilthedarksidechronic...
here is the thing. Dead Space Extraction was one complete story, but I didn't so much care. I like the gameplay in RE Chronicles 1 over Extraction. Then there is the issue of the graphics, the Darkside Chronicles from the videos I have seen wins here. Sure Extraction had good character models but the water effects and bosses were sad and low poly compared to the RE counterpart.
I think it's a case of potaytoe potahtoe.
I like how you can shoot EVERYTHING in a RE on rails shooter, in dead space none of the environment responds to your weapons fire. Also you have to constantly spam that "telekenisis" button which gets really repetitive.
The weapons in Extraction were pretty uninspiring also.
It was an ok game but I really wouldn't put it above the RE games in any sense of the word except maybe that it had 1 long story. Even with that, I love the RE lore and secrets even if they are in little snippets, it makes it feel like more than one game.
Extractions story I didn't care about as much, the characters were pretty typical and sounded like they were trying to swear to be cool.
RE characters leave more to your imagination and don't try to act as much so don't fail as much with switching accents etc.
Light gun type games have just been below average, average, or slightly above average. Players don't like to lose control in their games. As for the screenshot, that shot is touched up by an artist. As are many game shots in magazines, websites, and box art. The Wii is not capable of having graphics that smooth. #residentevilthedarksidechronic...
@Megamoppy: Why would the first one be impossible? His clothes don't even have really anything for textures. It doesn't even look as good as RE Remake. The water's not that great either. The Wii could do that just fine. #residentevilthedarksidechronic...
@Ueziel: I hope these are Wii screenshots, the first one looked great, this looks even better.
But yeah, that water... looks like the monster hunter mud again #residentevilthedarksidechronic...
@Ueziel: I didn't mean that by itself it is unreasonable but in the context of the article, that the screenshot that I would expect "jaggies" to appear. #residentevilthedarksidechronic...

I'm not ashamed to profess my love for lightgun games.
The girlfriend and I had fun with Umbrella Chronicles ... and we loved HotD:Overkill.
She just got me DarkSide Chronicles and I'm sure we'll have fun with that one too.
I still need to give Dead Space a try.
And I'm hoping to find Ghost Squad in a bargin bin somewhere.

Decent gun attachments are a must. And not those backwards wii zappers.
We have a pair of Nyko "Perfect Shot" that are fantastic.
And I've got half a mind to get one of those nerf ones if I find the set for super cheap somewhere.
