Seriously? Longest road is just a pissing contest between you and whoever else wants those two points. Put your money into quick dirty settlements and get on as many hexs as possible, spreading out how many different numbers you're on.
Catan isn't a game for bastards. I can never bring myself to do even trades or even things marginally in my favor as I rather my opponent(s) suffer. I can't enjoy a board game that requires me to be friendly with my enemy. Probably why my friends and I always enjoyed Carcassonne so much. Nothing beats taking the air out of the hopes for super castle completion.
@Kobun: I also enjoy sitting on a massive stack of cards just lose half when someone rolls a seven, simply because I didn't want to help them out. Risk is a better board game for my destructive nature. I like to just pick anyone at random and attempt to annihilate them at any cost.

@Grahamunculus: I can't see having a massive stack of cards when building and port trading keeps it manageable. Since everything is worth some amount of points, it helps to keep building. Games always seem to end in a development card race as it is, so better to start off in position to farm them from my experience. Development card cost is too low with too good advantages for me to ignore.
@Kobun: I always seem to get to screwed on dev cards as someone will pick up the monopoly card and jack my wheat. I usually end up in a close second place with very sporadic victories. I can't tell you how many times I've been within 1 point and every one teamed up to hand the game to someone else.

Early ports are a fine piece of advice though.

Such is my love of Catan.

I have no clue what this Catan is though, seems like something my old friends at the comic store would play alongside Carcassonne and Flux.
