IGN Nintendo: Scandal or Old News?

VGMWatch tonight decided to spill the not-so-breaking news that Matt Casamassina, long-time editor-in-chief of the IGN Nintendo Team, is married to Edie Kissko. This is, in these times of games journalism head-scratching, a bit interesting. Kissko is the vice president of Golin Harris, which also happens to be Nintendo's PR firm.

Neither Casamassina nor Golin Harris have commented on the article, but Casamassina's long-time marriage to Kissko isn't exactly a secret. While his readers might not be aware of it, most in the journalism community and certainly the readers at Neo-Gaf are.

I don't doubt Casamassina's desire to keep his personal and work lives separate, but the problem with conflict of interest is that it's not always about the reality of the situation, but also about appearances.

Both IGN and Golin Harris were contacted for comment, neither have yet responded. We will update this post when and if they do.

IGN Editor Married to Nintendo PR Executive

Update: Golin Harris has responded:
"All GolinHarris employees who work on the Nintendo account sign and adhere to a strict confidentiality agreement."

Update 2: Matt has responded:
"While I would prefer to keep my wife and kids out of the public spotlight, the fact that Edie and I have been happily married for several years is no secret. Nintendo and IGN / FOX have been aware of our relationship since we first started dating. We're professionals. Both of us have signed strict confidentiality agreements with our respective employers and, incidentally, we leave what happens on the job at our home's front door.

The original article makes the suggestion that my marriage to Edie violates the trust of IGN's dedicated readership, but I think my body of work speaks for itself. Over the years, I have remained one of Nintendo's biggest fans and harshest critics and have also developed hundreds of reliable of sources within the industry, none of them Edie."

Proof Provided of Halo DS, Still Not A Real Game

IGN's Matt Casamassina couldn't take it anymore. After seeing that both our own Luke Plunkett and the mighty Wikipedia had questioned the existence of the fabled Halo DS, something snapped inside of him. Storming the halls of IGN, he hacked the company's master computer (password: kotakurulez) and uploaded assets from the game onto the web. And then, in a cocktease sure to break the hearts of fanboys everywhere, he stated:
Let's be clear. This game will never see the light of day. At the same time, the below videos prove that Halo DS wasn't a garage project by a two-man team. There were some very big names involved with this title, so it's a shame you won't get to play it.
Hit the jump for a full motion taste of what could have been while Matt shouts, "I didn't kill my wife," and dives hundreds of feet into turbulent, HalolessDS waters. Yes, there's video that looks slightly more legit than this version. More »

IGN Making Virtual Console Game

For many, game journalism is an "in" for an industry career, and IGN's Matt Casamassina is the latest game journo turned game designer. In a recent podcast, the Nintendo obsessed editor announced that he's working on a Virtual Console game for the Wii. This doesn't seem to be stunt, as Casamassina says a "top tier" development team has been assembled. Details are scant, but he adds that the game will be "wacky, insane, even retarded" and will make use of four Wii-motes. Expect either a "7" or an "8" score on the IGN metric. More »

IGN Accuses Kotaku of Believing IGN

IGN's Nintendo corespondent Matt Casamassina claimed on his official blog that he was moving on to cover 360 and PS3 games—a shocking revelation from a man who has made a career in the enthusiast press by wholeheartedly devoting his coverage to a single company. Then, in a half-assed retcon, Casamassina claimed to have left his computer on while on vacation, obliquely placing the blame for the announcement on the Algonquin Roundtable of IGN's own group-home editorial staff. We were not amused, because we are heartless, humorless pricks. More »

Casamassina Reminds Us He's an Ass

Well there you go, I made the mistake of assuming that something posted on one of IGN's blogs was in fact based on reality and not just a pathetic cry for attention. Boo me. More »

Casamassina Drops Ninty for the 360

Matt "Nintendo" Casamassina, IGN's Nintendo head honco, announced today that he's decided to move-on from heading up IGN's Nintendo coverage. Casamassina said he requested last week that he be moved over to run either the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360 channels. More »
