err isn't the wii install base outside the hardcore gaming base (18-3x) *notthat this age range dont own wiis. i think it makes perfect sense to stick with ps3 and 360. not to mention the hardcore gaming community is online with the 360 where as the wii.... not so much.
@bknight: I don't know if there are enough examples to back up that argument, if you look at the games individually. RE4 sold really well. Yup, it's a port, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a Mature game, on the Wii.
Manhunt 2 sold poorly, but it was (as I understand) a pretty crappy game.
I believe there are millions of Wii owners clamoring for a well-made, mature, effort on the Wii.
I A SORRY TO DISAGRE WITH THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE HERE BUT THE WIII CONTROLS ARE NO THE PROBLEMS IS YOU THE PS3 AND XBOX 360 FANS THAT DO NOT COMPREHEND THE COMPLEXITY OF THE CONTROLS AND TAKE THEM SLIGHTY .....AND ABOUT MATURE GAMES I THINK THE BEST THEY HAVE IS NO MORE HEROES AND RESIDENT EVIL 4...GREAT GAMES AND SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL IS GREAT NONSENSE OF BEATING .......I THINK IF NINTENDO MAKE MORE M RATED GAMES THEY WILL GO FOR THE RIGHT PATH
@KillerBee: "No matter what game you make for the Wii, it will have mediocre reviews, shitty controls and will sell like shit."
I feel sorry for your lack of motor functions. It must suck not being able move more than a finger at a time. Just as well, you should probably stop doing jenkem before reading about games, and may want to look at a good ol' NPD chart.
"Take out the required motion controls and games will get significantly better. Motion Control is a horrible gimmick that ONLY works for Wii Sports."
1.) Motion controls aren't required. It's just a strength and a tool the console has-- just like how not every DS game need use the touch screen.
2.) Motion controls can be adapted very well, and a Wiimote allows for aiming controls that could actually put a mouse to shame, depending on the user's own speed and accuracy.
@DioBrando: Also, Nintendo REQUIRES some form of motion control for the Wii on any game. Same goes for the DS, it HAS to have touch integrated in some form.
@KillerBee: Dragon Quest IV wasn't required to use the touch screen. Chances are, neither will V, VI, or IX. And of course every Wii game's going to have motion control as an option, since that's the defualt controller for the system. However, just because I CAN play a fighting game with the waggle stick doesn't mean I'm not going to run for the Classic controller when given an option.
@RawSteelUT: I 100% agree with you, if I have the option, I'll go classic every time. the problem is, 90% of Wii games don't offer an option.
Zelda on the Wii was total garbage with the motion controls. Given the option to go classic controller, it would have been a great game. I played it for an hours and never touched it again due to the absolute shitty motion controls.
@bknight: yeah, but it wouldn't be hard for them to do. It would really require only a slight upgrade to whatever engine was used on ps2, xbox for gta 3, vice city, san andreas, chuck on some motion controls (motion plus maybe?) and classic controller/ gamecube controller support to keep everyone happy, throw in the usual run of the mill missions around whatever city based of a randomly chosen major american city and done.
Theres one teensy tiny problem with producing a mega smash M rated game on the Wii right now. Its not the horsepower. Its not the controls.
Its public perception.
Parents are buying this thing because, well, part of the reason is because they don't hear in the news about their kid, little timmy, being able to get his hands on any 'Grand Theft Autos' or somesuch.
Look at the retarded (mini)outcry when a third party gun peripheral was made way back, for chrissakes.
Im all for putting M rated games on the Wii, but I guarentee you any company looking at doing it is going to be news huge if their game gets successful. This aint your PS3/360 here, which are like wild west towns, or your PC, which is more akin to an anarchistic sex paradise island where anything and everything goes. This is the goddamn Wii. When parents buy it, they're expecting to be moving to cleantown USA.
Hell, they can track your gametime and everything on it.
Just try to imagine what would happen if Manhunt 2 were released today and it wasnt a pile of shit. What Fox News and Washinton Post and Daily Planet(?) stories would have been run about 'MURDER SIMULATOR ON THE WII?!?!? YOUR KIDS ARE PLAYING IT'.
The first very successful M rated game is going to be running a sharp sword.
Good luck to you, Madworld, btw. I hope you kick so much serious ass that you become that game. I cant wait to see the parental reaction if it becomes a hit.
@bfwings55: Astonishing how valid facts can be considered fanboy trolling. Whenever it's "your" console that's being insulted, regardless of validity, it's fanboy trolling. When the "other guy's" console is being insulted, it's just pointing out the flaws.
And, here, we're not even arguing over the quality of the Wii, just the potential to put "M" games on the console.
And, the facts are simple. "M" games don't sell on the Wii, and they won't sell on the Wii. Understand, again, this is not a knock on the system at all, but it's a system with a tendency to only have games that have mass-appeal to succeed. "M" games are dedicated games. They are "Hardcore gamer" games. "T" and "E" games can also be "hardcore gamer" games, but "M" games will only be games that require dedication. And, historically, games like that haven't sold well on the Wii.
@Ad-hominem: It is if it's Madden or a movie game.
Really, I don't think Ratings are any way to rate games, if that makes any sense. I think the rating reflects the game's offensive content (or lack thereof), but has no effect on the game itself. An E rated game can be just as good as an M game.
@bfwings55: What the hell? Did you just ignore what I said?
I specifically said that an "E" game can be just as good as an "M" game. That wasn't the point of my statement at all. If you look to Komrade_Kayce's comment, you'll see that he essentially iterated the same attitude as my comment, but far more eloquently, and better detailed.
You yourself say that making a Madden is the way to make a financially viable game for the Wii. Family-Friendly, available to everyone, regardless of actual quality. But, to say that the level of offensive content has no effect on the game itself is an absurdity. Of course it does. Nobody is going to try and make a game with "mass appeal", and then limit it to a specific sub-group, which is what making an "M" game does. Hence, why it would be a poor decision on the Wii.
@Ad-hominem: "And, the facts are simple. "M" games don't sell on the Wii,"
That's not a "fact" at all. Both RE games sold over a million copies on the Wii. One was a remake and the other a light gun shooter. Neither one of which should be selling over a million. So why did they? Because they are both GOOD titles. They just happen to be rated M. A better "fact" might be, SHITTY "M" games don't sell on the Wii.
If you don't believe me, please name a few quality AAA titles, you know, like Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto IV or the like that are M rated and failed on the Wii. Because I'm curious which games you're using as your evidence of the "fact" that M rated titles don't sell on Wii. No rush, I'll wait.
@CommentatorHatman: Decent, maybe, but good, not really. The controls were terrible (trying to back into a corner took forever, and trying to shoot with guns was not fun at all), unskippable cutscenes was an awful mistake, and the censorship was flat out stupid. I have roughly 20 or so Wii games and it is easily the weakest of all of them.
But on the subject of mature Wii games many people on here agree that No More Heroes was a terrific game and I very much agree. It may be a short and style over substance, but the style was so insane and fun and the boss battles were so epic that I think it's one of the top games on the system and can't wait for the sequel in 2010.
@Ad-hominem: "'M' games will only be games that require dedication."
Go play Gears of War 2. Now play Ikaruga. Tell me how the vulgar language and gore proved to be a more challenging and engaging experience.
The "M" rating is simply a content descriptor for those aspects which most people consider unsuitable for children. It has no bearing whatsoever on the gameplay, intelligence, or challenge of a title.

With the current number of Wii's sold, if a decent mature games is made I'm sure it will sell well.

Super Mario Galaxies used very little motion control thankfully so, and the waggle to spin seemed tacked on at the end.
