This is the first time I'm going to tell an editor that I think not only are they wrong, but they're being fucking stupid about it.
Luke, what the hell. The achievement is called remember september 44'. The game is about playing through operation market garden. The date is a 'tragedy' in that nobody would even bother to remember or think of it unless we're shown things that would even make us bother to look at why that date is important, hence, the Achievement might be doing some good.
And its not like its remembering some brutal massacre of prisoners or an a bomb drop or something, its remembering a time when the allies tried to do something heroic and launched a campaign.
So, something to get you to consider the sacrifice made through that operation and remember the date is a negative?
You know, positive reinforcement is the best way to get people to remember things. This is a way for them to get at least a few people to consider and respect the fallen.
But, hey, you're right ... not classy at all -- time to cancel Memorial Day! Why should people get a holiday just to honor sacrifice?
It makes me sad when I read professional game’s journalists write things like the "Stay Classy" comment above.
All those men that sacrificed their lives for us, so we can enjoy freedom and the trappings of modern day life. The games devs / publishers try to keep that memory alive and you try to turn it into something nasty?
Your behaving like a poisoness little troll. But hey, if that gets you ahead in your career, then go for it. There’s nothing in the way but your conscience.
Actually, I don't see how this is a bad thing. The company isn't making any money from it and it's simply a device to make people remember the date and possibly even take some interest in what happened that day. What next, rage over documentaries? Come on people...
The achievement is called "Remember September" and it was designed to remind us of the sacrifice of Allied soldiers to liberate Holland and help end WW2 in Europe.
That achievement could've been anything and any one as smart as you could've spent five seconds imagining a billion more achievement concepts that would've done more for sales or whatever you're trying to imply the objective is here.
So fuck you for trying to suggest that this was anything but honoring the legacy of Operation Market Garden including all of the soldier and civilians that sacrificed so much so that we can even have things like Xbox 360's with things like achievements today.
The regular use of this sort of thing could take a chunk out of used game sales. But then again, maybe not. Seems like a "Game Holiday." Maybe that's marketable.
Wow, there's some serious over reacting going on in this thread. The Achievement is called "Remember September '44" and I for one am glad someone is bothering to remind us all of that, even if it is a video game.
The achievement isn't for "celebrating" Operation Market Garden... its for remembering, thats why its called "rememberseptember1944. I don't see anything wrong with this. Tell me, whats worse? Giving out achievement points so people will actually be reminded of a important and horrific event in American history, or the fact that 90% of the people on here didn't even remember that Operation Market Garden began on Sept. 17?
I can see a problem with this. The person who thought of it should be fired and get no parachute. He definitely shouldn't be Patton him self on the back. This isn't a bridge to success. This is so cold there's Frost!

Someone could have celebrated the battle of Wake Island with Loco Roco music.

It's tongue in cheek. Leave it be.

It doesn't seem very tounge in cheek. Seems snide and shotty. My misrepresentation then, if it was.
