Also: I know those flying orbs has been done and redone.. games like Onimusha for instance... but I always remember of Soul Reaver.
Ok, after those comments I'm feeling kinda old now...

Hi guys--the combo system is actually full of cancels into block, dash, other attacks, etc.
As for the timing window, it works much like the combo system in God of War, etc--you have a certain amount of time to score another hit to get a higher multiplier. In some places, it's easy to get a decent multiplier, others require more advanced strats, and getting into the hundreds requires straight up skills.
It's not immediately transparent what's going on here because a) Derek is very good at the game b) you haven't had a chance to play it yet (probably).
MVC2 combos look silly too until you dig a little deeper and see what's really happening. This game certainly isn't the same type of system, I'm just pointing out that knowing what's going on sometimes requires more understanding than is possible in one vid.
@capcomseth: Oh man, if the combo system is like God of War, then I take back whatever I said. It's not my favorite game by any means, but I did think the combo system worked well, and at least it was difficult for ME to get high combos because I don't know how to block properly. It's just that it kind of looks like the environment is a bit TOO destructive and combo-helpful in that video, and the time window might be kind of large, but that might just be because of the second player, and I haven't played it yet, so I can't say.
Have you guys played Gungrave? It operates on a somewhat similar environment destruction aided combo mechanic, albeit with ranged weapons. I think you should try it.
@capcomseth: Are you THE Seth Killian ? Much obliged, sir.
Very nice to see developpers take an interest in what players have to say in forums, etc
By the way, I'm very excited for this game. I've been waiting forever for a proper beat'em up ... since The Warriors, basically.
@capcomseth: I think I noticed some multiplier degradation over time if the hit count fails to increase within a certain timing window. Was that actually what I saw?
@WoundedBum: How is that relevant? Don't mean to seem cocky or arrogant, honestly, but I don't see how a remake of Monkey Island 2 relates to an as-to-be released beat-em-up for the Wii by Capcom. It's not a remake of anything; it's "remastered" because it underwent an overhaul in the graphical style of the game.
How does this even work? There are plenty of places where the character misses and the combo isn't broken, but near the end this huge combo (which doesn't even look like a combo to me, else this "time window" is pretty freakin' huge for a combo system) is broken for whatever reason. What? I also don't think that blocked attacks (for it looks like quite a few of those attacks are blocked, or rendered ineffective SOMEHOW at points in the video) should count towards a combo, which they do in fact appear to.
@gold163 Have Explosive: I've got problems with this, too. The time window is huge and I don't get how hitting crates and railings count toward a combo. It's a bummer. Before this video I thought this game might have been decent but that feeling is gone now.
@jayislost: Yeah, I know what you mean; the game just seems so easy and boring from what I can tell. Either they make the enemy count huge and make the combo system count kills a la Dynasty Warriors, or they make the combo system count hits and give the characters cancels and whatnot. You can't have both; it just doesn't work.
@jayislost: Jesus christ people. The game is no longer DECENT because it has a somewhat lenient combo timing (it's basically a couple of seconds after the orbs stop being absorbed)? I love ridiculous the standard get for Wii games.
"Oh, I can continue a combo for a long time and it shows me numbers and I get bonuses. This game isn't even decent." What the hell guy. What the hell.
@Ueziel: Well, maybe his reasons for disliking how the game looks to be turning out include other things, such as how the game looks piss easy (might just be the devs playing on an easy mode for promotional video sakes, but the health meters barely moved in those videos and for a beat-em-up that's simply unacceptable), how the combat system looks uninteresting (at least, how it's portrayed in this video, you don't see any of the cool QTE team attacks in the other videos, and like I said, the combo system looks incredibly unbalanced and easily exploitable), and how the game generally just looks like another standard brawler. Nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned, but I'm not throwing 50 bucks down for a game that plays exactly like the genre did two decades ago with a combo system that's unnecessary and doesn't even make any sense. I mean, I think the game looks decent, but not $50 decent.
@gold163 Have Explosive: Thanks for the back up. Your words pretty well sum up my thoughts about the combo system. For the record, though, after the game vanished from the radar and got a pretty significant overhaul, I thought it would be a stylish Ratchet and Clank clone (for lack of a better term). Instead, this video makes it look like a God of War rip-off, no offense intended to Kratos and his fans.
@Ueziel: If it'll make you happy, I'll reserve all further judgment until I get my hands on a copy. But you have to promise to remember, from here on out, that a person's taste in video games is highly subjective. Also, it's got nothing to do with being a Wii game. I would have the same feelings about it even if it were a 360/PS3 title instead. Besides, there's a preview for it in the new issue of Nintendo Power that came today. That didn't help to sell me on it either.
