All of you who bought the game after saying you wouldn't: Ha.
All the people who are trolling the boycotting "nerds": Haha.
The boycotters all present a valid argument that only exists to present a better multiplayer gameplay experience for EVERYONE. But to completely reject a game's release only to be caught playing it...oh man. Have some shame. #modernwarfare2
Just go buy the game you whiney little babies. IW obviously made the right choice here. They pulled off the biggest launch in video game history, all while you guys were sitting in your mom's basements crying. The entire gaming community is sick to death of your whining. Nobody gives a damn if you think you guys are smarter than everyone else because you can type in console commands. Also, who really gives a crap about keyboard chat. Welcome to 10 years ago, its a microphone!
So glad kotaku posted this picture. Have fun playing CS... I'm going to go use my harrier to unlock even more badass killstreak perks while you dorks are keyboard chatting while your waiting five minutes for another CS round to start.
@garycecs:
You didn't really look at the picture did you? They did go buy the game, the majority of the list are playing Modern Warfare 2. That's why it's so funny, they're whining and saying they're going to boycott it but they're all playing it anyway. #modernwarfare2
Wasn't going to buy the second one even before this dedicated server stuff came about. Then I see these people who are obviously going to buy the game anyway boycotting it. You know what that makes me look like? One of those idiots.
Thanks PC gaming community.
Here's my Steam name and you will never see MWF2 played on it: [steamcommunity.com]
We, PC gamers, have brought shame upon ourselves. From the initial announcement of the removal of dedicated servers, I have been against MW2, and remain against it. I have not bought it for my PC, and I will not buy it for my PC. However, this proves that despite what a majority of PC gamers say - they will not stick to their guns.
You want change to happen, you have to DO something about it. It's the old adage "actions speak louder than words". Our actions as gamers here prove to IW and every other developer in the industry that our words are meaningless. Our opinions lose their value every time the masses scream BOYCOTT, yet follow the developers wishes and cave when the game is released.
The worst part about this is that we have now sent ourselves down a road we cannot turn back from. Other developers were watching for IW/Activision's success very closely, and there will likely be many that now follow suit. It is unfortunate that we, as gamers, cannot be mature enough to stand by our word and follow through on our promises.
What is more unfortunate is the amount of direct flames and attacks in this thread. I mean, I've had my share of regrettable comments on this topic in the past, but this is getting obnoxious guys. We are all better than this. The battle is very obviously (and painfully) over, time to man up and move on. #modernwarfare2
@Bakeroo: Neither, actually. Can't justify spending $60 on it right now. I still have to get Uncharted 2, NSMB Wii, Assassin's Creed 2, Rachet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (playing through the first 2 first)...etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love my FPS's, but the original MW and TF2 are still filling that niche nicely for now. #modernwarfare2
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: MW2 sold 5 billion copies? The entire world has about 7 billion people... that means ~71% of everyone in the world has MW2. Not a bad launch. #modernwarfare2
1565 members, 549 online, 45 playing MW2, by my count.
A number of them could've pirated the game too, and for a game that's caused so much butthurt, I would expect the piracy rates to be heavily increased.
A single image like so (without any input from the poster - obviously done for effect) is misleading, I mean of course there are going to be some hypocrites in the group, there always are with things like this.
EDIT: I've just noticed that I've referred a a bigger boycott group than the one in question, as it's this one;
@Radz: The ones that pirate the game are even bigger hypocrites than the ones that say they'll boycott it but still buy it. At the very least I can respect the consumer that buys the game even if they are frustrated by it. But the pirates show time and time again that they have no balls. #modernwarfare2
@odeed: Actually the member list doesn't shown that. I guess some bug with Steam.
Something I noticed on the kotakuites group as we tend have a fair amount of folks in "non-steam games", yet it doesn't show up in the member list unless you click through on to their SteamID page. #modernwarfare2
@odeed: MW2 is integrated with Steam, a friend of mine was playing his pirated version earlier using Steam, and I don't remember it saying "non-steam game", he's offline at the moment though, so I can't confirm if that's the case.
I do know the RAZOR1911 release had to have Steam to launch though -
"5. First log into steam and then run the iw4sp.exe! Othwerwise it wont work!
If you want to play this game in multiplayer you have to buy it!"
I'd be interested if you could confirm what you say is true, I can't find out until tomorrow, or unless I obtained the game myself within the next few hours. If things remain as they are, I'll definitely reply with the result tomorrow at the very least.
Pirating something you boycott is an even better way to boycott it than not buying it. Not only are you not giving them a dime, you're taking up server space with a free copy, adding to your achievements for free, and possibly, depending on the kind of person you are, you are giving it to more people aswell.
Oh, and before you say pirated copies can't play online, sure, on PC this is true, but not on console, and I know plenty of people that have it pirated for console.
@out-phaze: The problem is that pirates are admitting that they aren't willing to take place in the market and chances are, were never willing to do so to begin with. It takes all of the air out of their boycott when they are not willing to say, "you know what, yes, you're game is awesome. But the changes you made are significant enough to me that I will not play it."
By ignoring that fact, and playing the game in spite of their perceived anger they are sending a message that the changes are not enough to dissuade them from playing it, even if they are enough to dissuade them from buying it. It's a hypocritical way of thinking.
It's as if you didn't like a particular brand of meat at the supermarket. You can send the message to the market by not buying that meat. But what message are you sending when you say that you will boycott that meat, and then walk into the store and shoplift it?
The pirates may be displeased, but by not backing up their words with action, they are proving nothing - other than Call of Duty is addictive and still worth playing even if the company that created it has perpetuated certain policies that you disagree with.
While I do admit the sales will not be hurt by either action, it still reflects poorly on the pirate for not going that full mile in voicing their displeasure. It's a fine line, true, but it is still one that can be discerned. #modernwarfare2
@odeed: Well I went ahead and had my friend double check it today, his does say non-steam game in my friend's list, but if I go to a community page of a group he's in, it will count him as in-game, but his status doesn't change at all, it merely says he's online aka blue status, even though his little friend tab thing has been thrown among the A-Z of people playing games. When he plays a normal Steam game his little community tab changes instantly in the group and becomes green.
So you were somewhat right and at the same time incorrect, my mistake initially though, I stand corrected. I guess we can narrow potential pirates down to the "online" people among the in-game section of the group's members, but even then we won't know exactly what non-steam game they're playing, thus it would be silly to assume. #modernwarfare2
I would love to be able to see how those people's minds work.
Knowing the logical gymnastics they went through in order to justify themselves playing the game while keeping the self-righteousness of boycotting it would be priceless. #modernwarfare2
@ca$h is Mr. Happy: Haha, yeah, I love it! Honestly, I was pretty upset about the lack of dedicated servers, but I never considered boycotting the game. The game is great, and a single flaw isn't going to keep me from playing it. #modernwarfare2
... PROTESTERS FAIL! That is all. Mind you, I'm not surprised, and just means THE MAN can go around and oppress us all he likes, because in the end, we do buy and play their game, their way. For shame! For shame, my good sirs! *goes back to play CODMW2*
@Shiryu: You realize that this was only a few people out of a group of 800. Not to mention, Steam can't tell the difference between a pirated and legal game. I'm willing to bet some of those copies are pirated. #modernwarfare2
