”Jimmy Kimmel Talks Bourne Conspiracy Game
Jimmy Kimmel's odd and escalating feud with Matt Damon over whether the actor should be playing Jason Bourne was amped up a notch Friday night when Kimmel's security guard got to replace Damon in the video game. Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is some product placement.

Matt Damon Wanted Myst-Like Bourne Game
Today's special update isn't just a special update, it's a Matt Damon special update. Yesterday, we brought word that according to MTV Matt Damon had walked out of negotiations to appear in the Bourne game, believing it was too violent. Or something! MTV now brings word that Matt Damon never explicitly stated he was against the violence, but just seemed disinterested in the project. According to Damon:
I lobbied hard [with the video producers] to not make a first-person shooter game but to make it more like Myst, which was a great interesting puzzle you tried to solve — you know, to play with his amnesia or his memory... They weren't interested.
Apparently while filming the Bourne movies, nobody told Damon he wasn't starring in Memento. That's too bad.
Update: Matt Damon Didn't Speak [Multiplayer via Game|Life]
Matt Damon OK With Movie Violence, Not OK With Game Violence
Just because Matt Damon has been in some violent Bourne movies, doesn't mean he's gonna be in some violent Bourne game. No way! Originally Damon was in negotiations to lend his voice and likeness to the Sierra published game, but pulled out. Apparently he had issues with the game's violence. Since Matt Damon's publicist refused to comment, time to see what Matt Damon's mother thinks. Matt Damon's mother, the floor is yours:
Matt and I don't share the same views about violence in adult films, but we do see eye-to-eye on the importance of protecting children. We both support regulations to stop the marketing of violence in films to children through violent toys, products, and video games.
Double standard, much?

The Bourne Conspiracy Impressions
I'm sure by now most of you are familiar with the genius cell phone PR stunt that Sierra threw together for the upcoming Bourne Conspiracy game. While it was cool, the real question is, how was the game? I met with some of the developers from High Moon Studios to check out the game being played and get some explanation of was all about.
The Bourne Conspiracy is somewhat an amalgamation of the three Bourne films although the books are used as reference pretty heavily. You'll find no Matt Damon character models here! They really wanted to make this as entrenched in the Bourne lore as possible and as such there is very little gunplay involved. You must rely on your McGuyver like wits to help you make your way through the game, using the things you can find around you and your trusty fists to their greatest use. Remember that pen stabbing scene?
Free Rides At The Bourne Conspiracy Train Depot
While we've heard quite a bit about Sierra's The Bourne Conspiracy, we haven't gotten much of a taste of the straight gameplay. So here's a big, ice cold scoop for your enjoyment. Hight Moon Studios obviously put a lot of time into capturing the quick cuts of the Bourne films. And while it looks like the effect will work, but we'd have to play it to find out. Otherwise, it's actually reminding us quite a bit of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. You know, on a subway and stuff.
The Bourne Conspiracy Hits in June
Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy ships in North America on June 3 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, Sierra announced today.
"We're creating a video game that is distinctly Bourne, based on a deconstruction of the character from action hero to game hero, and one that we ultimately believe gamers will discover as a distinctively original licensed action game," said Emmanuel Valdez, chief creative officer, High Moon Studios and game director on The Bourne Conspiracy.
I'm still totally confused about how this game missed not just the first movie, but all three of them. Why not release the game in the middle of the Bourne hype not after it's all died down? So odd. Hit the jump for the full release.

'Designing Filmic Games': Designing the Bourne Game
Gamasutra has a great interview up with Paul O'Connor of High Moon Studios, talking about the challenges and pitfalls of designing games based on movie IPs (in this case, a game based on The Bourne Conspiracy; while not directly tied to any of the films, they are using parts of the films in their game). As he succinctly notes early in the interview, the terrible reputation of movies-turned-games is entirely deserved; while I've read a number of interviews tackling this question, this interview is in-depth and a meaty read in a way that most of the others aren't. No HDD In Core? "Mistake"
Core and Arcade Xbox 360s are missing something super important: a HDD. That means developers must make sure their games can work without a HDD so a segment of users aren't totally screwed. Rory McGuire, lead designer on PS3 title Bourne Conspiracy, says:
In retrospect I wish Microsoft had made the choice to have [mandatory] hard drives like Sony did with the PS3... They did it with the original Xbox. I'm not sure why they decided to not require a hard drive on the 360. From what I understand they don't move many [Core/Arcade] units... Developers certainly benefit [from a hard drive]," he went on to explain, adding: "if you have a hard drive, the whole game loads faster. Obviously you'll be facing a short install time, but the developer benefits from it and you definitely benefit from it as a player... So I think that was one of the mistakes that Microsoft made with the 360.
Another mistake is of course made by the people buying the Core/Arcade Xbox 360s.

Postal Makes Bourne Book Cameo
Just got a press release directly from Running With Scissors CEO Vince Desi (above). It mentions that the company's game Postal is mentioned in the latest Bourne novel The Bourne Betrayal, written by Eric Van Lustbader. (Bourne creator Robert Ludlum passed away in 2001). The Postal franchise finds its way onto page 270. In the book, a young gang banger is given a gun in thanks for not ratting out some arsonists. The kid decides to use the weapon because he:
"already had some experience with blowing people's heads off playing Postal 2..."
Vince Desi has openly declared to "perform a BJ in gratitude — that is, a Bourne Job." Using lame puns and reinforcing negative gaming stereotypes, that's our Desi. More »

Let's Not Make a Sucky "Bourne" Game, 'K?
Movie The Bourne Ultimatum is out in American theaters and making serious bank. But where's the game? Oh, it's coming. Just gotta wait until next year! Vivendi Games have a cross platform Bourne title named THe Bourne Conspiracy slated for mid-2008. What's taking so long? Emmanuel Valdez, chief creative officer at Vivendi's internal developer, points out:
We knew we didn't have enough time to build a quality 'Ultimatum' game and come out with it at the same time as the movie. So we decided to do things differently, something new.
That mean mixing in elements from the first movie The Bourne Identity and totally new elements that had to be approved by the estate of Robert Ludlum, the Bourne author who passed away in 2001. The movie's screenwriter was also brought in to make sure that the game jived with the Bourne books and films. Work on the game kicked off in 2005, and the devs knew that they could never finish the title in time. Instead, they decided to create a game that "could stand on its own two feet." We'll know next year if it does. And if it doesn't, we'll know that, too.

Loved Matt Damon in the Bourne Identity and the Bourne Supremacy films? Well, you'll have to enjoy the new Bourne game coming out from Sierra Entertainment and Ludlum Entertainment, called the Bourne Conspiracy, without him. Although the character is based on Jason Bourne's character, whether or not the likeness to the Hollywood star would be used in the game isn't clearly specified, but it specifically doesn't look like Matt Damon in these pictures. The title for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is being developed by one of Sierra's internal developers called High Moon who are hoping that the game will be released in the summer of 2008. More »
