The system was made available in November of 2001 and ceased production in November of 2005--four years--but my guess is that the retail channel still had stock that was sold off over the next year. Her statement could be correct if those remaining units had not sold through for another year, which is probable.

@billnabors65: No, it was four years. Just before the 360 released and we found out how bad the BC was going to be, I tried to go out and find a new original xbox. They were long gone pretty much everyone. Every store had blow out the last stragglers to make room for the 360.

This is quite a feat since the machines are much more than last gen. $250 PS2 compared to $500 PS3, same with 360. It's more expensive this time around so yes, this is an accomplishment. Now here's hoping they don't go release Xbox 720 next year and screw us over.

    Hurray!

We've succeeded in catching up to the point where we came in a distant second to Sony last generation.

Maybe, if we try really hard, we can reach 33 million, which would still make it an utter failure.

Mind you, I'm not trying to bring down Microsoft, and I congratulate them on their success.

But, maybe, just maybe, they should celebrate when they do something significant? If Sony announced next week that they had managed to surpass lifetime Gamecube or Xbox sales with the Ps3, I'd make the same sarcastic remark.

@Ad-hominem:They are reaching it in less time then they though, a greater marketshare then they thought and with less money then they thought.

Remember Bill Gates forcast that the Xbox division would take over 3 complete console gens and 8 billion dollars in losses before they finally had any sort of foothold. And no one thought they would be matching Sony this early on.

@EnigmaNemesis:Everyone learned the painful lesson that Sony had to. Expect the next gen of consoles to not be priced above $400 and that would be for the all in one unit. It may be possible next gen that we see $299 units across the board mostly.

@Cunder:You mean people are that..silly? You know that after the 2nd or in some cases, the 1st repair, they send you a brand new unit, right?

@Shooter McGavin:So we can say the same for all of the folks like me who went though 4 to 8 PS2's due to DRE right? Or the many folks who went though 3-4 PSones due to the laser going out of alignment.

After all, those soccer moms/grannys aint buying wii 2.0 when they have the GC1.5.

@Marios_shadow: you could argue that ninty's already SHITified some of their ip's, but thats a can of worms.

Jesus tap dancing Christ, how are all of these people so out of touch with their consumers?! I mean, GTA is a fun game and all but NO WAY is it worth a monthly subscription of ANY amount. I'll definitely not buy a game that requires a monthly subscription, even if it is Bioshock or something equally as entertaining.

Software as a service for games? Sure I'm down, as long as 2K provides the same level of support that a Platinum Sun account does. Basically I pay you money and if the shit breaks, for whatever reason. You send out your six figures engineer to fix it within 24 hours. 24x7, 365.

So in other words, if they're willing to provide the stellar support that goes with SaS, then sure I'm down. Otherwise fuck off and die.

    Wow, that'd be a bit well....shit.

I mean a subscription based GTA? What is that an MMO then? so just call it an MMO. If they'd announced a Bioshock or GTA MMO people would like it!

It they're thinking of episodic GTA's or Bioshocks though?

Sure, go with a subscription-based plan. Just don't charge me full retail price for the game at launch. You want me to spend $20 on DLC, price the game at $30.
