According to the company's Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, the Xbox 360 just had its "biggest sales week of the year."

Greenberg didn't put a specific figure to the console's sales from the Thanksgiving/Black Friday week as Nintendo did earlier today. But the increasingly svelte Xbox 360 spokesman did write that last week's numbers were "more than [two times the] previous week sales."

We'll see if Microsoft can top 2008, when the Xbox 360 maker claimed it outsold its PlayStation 3 competition three-to-one.

<![CDATA[Cyber Monday GameStop Robbery]]> Of all the shopping-heavy days in the year, two robbers in Maplewood, Missouri picked Cyber Monday as the likeliest day to do their "shopping" at GameStop in person. With a weapon.

St. Louis news service KMOX News reports that two mean armed with a handgun held up the Maplewood GameStop in Maplewood Commons at about 10:30 this morning. Nobody was hurt and the robbers took only money from the store.

I'm trying to decide if the robbers were using a strategy or not. On the one hand, it's Cyber Monday — so there won't be as many people in the store to potentially foil the robbery. But on the other hand, all the money from Black Friday is probably gone from the store and safely in GameStop's bank account... so how much could they really make off with?

Either way, that's two people getting coal in their stockings this Christmas...

<![CDATA[Black Friday In Photos]]> Black Friday still has a few hours left to go, but here's a look at how it's going in several California GameStop and Best Buy locations. You'll notice a lack of insanity and mobbing in the check-out lines.

We'll wait 'til the numbers come in before declaring it a tame Black Friday, though, and maybe blame it on the Bay Area rain. Feel free to share any of your own Black Friday shopping photos in the comments — especially if it was a madhouse in your area.

<![CDATA[Black Friday DSiWare Bundles Are Limited-Time Only]]> Answering a question we posed last week, Nintendo has officially announced two DSiWare-packed DSi bundles for Black Friday, available only as long as supplies last.

Last week's leaked Best Buy Black Friday ad outed the two new Nintendo DSi bundles, each packed with a unique assortment of DSiWare, which left us wondering if the DSi would come preloaded with games from here on out. Apparently not, as Nintendo's official announcement plays the "While supplies last" card.

Otherwise, the information is the same. You've got the Metallic Blue DSi packed with five Mario titles - Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again, Dr. Mario Express, WarioWare: Snapped!, Mario Calculator, and Mario Clock; and the White DSi bundle with three Brain Age Express titles, Clubhouse Games, and Photo Clock.

"These limited-edition bundles come packed with some of the great Nintendo DSiWare games and applications that have made Nintendo DSi such a big hit with shoppers young and old," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "The special price and pre-installed titles make the bundles a huge value for the holidays."

So if your retailer is participating and you're done playing Guitar Hero, this might be a good time to upgrade to a Nintendo DS with two cameras and downloadable games.

<![CDATA[GameStop's Black Friday Deals Look Solid, Slightly Used]]> Video game retailer GameStop is planning some solid, if not spectacular deals for this year's Black Friday shopping extravaganza, deals which appear to have made their way online.

While the cuts may not be as deep as the ones that, say, Walmart for example, has planned, a few of them might make it worth getting to your local GameStop before 11 AM. (For our international friends who may be unfamiliar with the Black Friday phenomenon, it's the unofficial day of pre-Christmas, post-Thanksgiving consumption that often brings out the best deals and the worst behavior in U.S. shoppers.)

Some highlights from the sale, via Black Friday Ads and backed up by tipster G., include:

  • Xbox 360 Elite w/ Lego Batman, Pure, & Choice of Call of Duty 4 OR Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - $299
  • PlayStation 3 120GB w/ LittleBigPlanet GOTY & God of War Collection - $299
  • Call of Duty: World at War (360/PS3) - $39.99
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (360/PS3) - $39.99
  • Forza Motorsport 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo 3 ODST - $39.99 each
  • Wii Sports Resort w/ Extra Wii MotionPlus - $49.99
  • Metallic Blue Nintendo DSi w/ Mario vs. DK: Mini's March Again, WarioWare Snapped, Dr. Mario Express, Mario Clock, Mario Calculator - $169.99
  • White Nintendo DSi w/ Clubhouse Games Express Card Classics, Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Sudoku, Brain Age Express: Math, Photo Clock - $169.99

That's just a small sampling. Comb through the gallery below for more.

<![CDATA[DSi Now Comes With Pre-Installed Software]]> Best Buy's Black Friday catalogue has popped up online, and amidst the bargains is an interesting offer from Nintendo: a DSi console that comes with downloadable DSiWare pre-installed on the machine.

There will be two bundles available, each with five games included on the system. One includes a white DSi with three Brain Age Express titles, Clubhouse Games and Photo Clock. The other has a blue DSi with Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, WarioWare: Snapped, Dr. Mario Express, Mario Calculator and Mario Clock.

Both are advertised at $169.99. It's unclear whether it's an offer that will be extended beyond Black Friday; we've contacted Nintendo, and will update if we hear back.

<![CDATA[Free LEGO Rock Band With Your Performance Fleece]]> Picking up that Old Navy gift card for your little sister could pay off this Black Friday, when the clothing retailer will be giving away free copies of LEGO Rock Band with every $20 purchase.

Old Navy isn't known for its video game deals, but they'll be handing out copies of LEGO Rock Band on Black Friday nonetheless, along with free guitar controllers with any purchase of Rock Band 2. It's all part of the Black Friday event the chain is calling Gobblepalooza, with "3 days of rockin' deals" for fans of Harmonix music games and affordable yet fashionable clothing for adults and teens.

It's a bizarre little promotion, really. So odd that you might actually have a chance of scoring a copy on Black Friday, if you can avoid being trampled. Old Navy is a scary place on Black Friday.

<![CDATA[Walmart Confirms 360 Sale, More Cuts Coming]]> Walmart's official website today confirms the rumor we broke yesterday about one heck of a deal on the Xbox 360 Arcade.

Listed among the one day in-store specials for this Saturday, Nov. 7, is an Xbox 360 Arcade console for $199 that comes with a $100 gift card. Other deals include discounted TVs, a Blu-ray player, DVD player and laptop.

More interesting, though, is what our sources tell us about the sale.

This weekend's one-day sale is just the first of weekly sales that will be hitting Walmart in the lead up to the post Thanksgiving retail sales explosion known as Black Friday.

We're told that this is Walmart's attempt at pulling a little of the focus off that huge shopping day and trying to spread the wealth over the entire month. So look out for future deals, perhaps including more gaming price cuts.

<![CDATA[Take-Two: We're Cautiously Optimistic Too!]]> The world economy is going to shit, but the video game industry continues to thrive. But for how long? Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick hops on the "cautious optimism" bandwagon, saying "slightly down is the new up."

He tells Reuters that his company had a Black Friday that was "better than expectations" but didn't provide dirt on Grand Theft Auto IV sales. Like Microsoft's Shane Kim, Zelnick seems pleased with recent sales, but is concerned about post-holiday "momentum."

If Strauss is worried, he sure doesn't show it. Just look at that cool, comfortable corporate lean! It exudes cautious optimism!

<![CDATA[Some Guy Tells Us What Sold On Black Friday, And What Didn't]]> If we can trust their own numbers - and really, at this stage, we can't - Microsoft had a great Black Friday. Sold a ton of consoles. But what else sold?

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian says he knows. Based on "initial checks" with retailers, a number of games have emerged as Black Friday best-sellers. And a number - some surprising titles among them - have emerged as Black Friday failures.

Among the best-sellers - at least based on these "initial checks" (remember, things may change when we get actual NPD figures!) - were the Wii and 360 on the hardware front, along with Wii Fit, Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War.

Among the failures? Sebastian says Need for Speed Undercover, Rock Band & Guitar Hero (all versions of both series) all sold less than expected, which he puts down to "possible consumer boredom with those familiar franchises".

A company that sits uncomfortably between the two is Sony. While they were trounced by Microsoft in overall sales, Peter Dille says PlayStation sales were up 90% from the same time last year, and that overall, sales were on schedule. Kinda lame/boring in comparison to Microsoft's bombastic press release, but gains are gains, we guess.

<![CDATA[Microsoft: Xbox 360 Outsold PS3 3-to-1 On Black Friday]]> The Xbox 360 experienced "record-breaking console sales" during the post-Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft corporately gloated today. It estimated a 25% increase in sales from Black Friday 2007 and boasted that it outsold the PlayStation 3 three-to-one.

Don Mattrick, senior VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, said that his company anticipated Black Friday sales with "cautious optimism," according to a statement, but has seemingly thrown caution to the wind with a bold press release. Mattrick says sales have "laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009." Oh no, they're takin' all the momentum!

Microsoft also boasts European Xbox 360 sales are "up as much as 400 percent" since its September price drop. Man, they're taking Europe too? Greedy.

Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History

Xbox 360 consoles and games sell at record levels; outsells PlayStation 3 by three-to-one ratio.

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-K/ — Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.

Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as "Gears of War 2," "Fable II," and "Lips." Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

"We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."

Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.

With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.

eBay Companies See Black Friday Shoppers Clicking for Great Deals

Nintendo Wii Console is The Most Popular Product on eBay

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Black Friday saw a buzz of shopping activity, as consumers took to their computers to snap up hot holiday gifts. eBay Inc. (Nasdaq:EBAY) companies, including PayPal and Shopping.com, all saw consumers going online for great deals. The companies reported key online shopping trends, popular categories and hot gifts.

“Results from Black Friday show that shoppers continue to turn to the Web for their holiday shopping needs, especially for consumer electronics,” said Jim “Griff” Griffith, eBay Marketplace Expert. “Online shopping is convenient and allows consumers to find the best values and vast selection. Shoppers can visit eBay and Shopping.com to purchase all of their holiday items at unbeatable prices, and can pay quickly and securely with PayPal.”

Shoppers are Clicking for Deals

With money tighter than ever, shoppers are hitting the Web to find the best values for their hard-earned cash. A recent Nielsen study found that 78 percent of adult online users made a purchase on the Web in the past six months.1 Additionally, a recent survey conducted by Survey.com on behalf of eBay found that getting “great deals” was the most important criteria for shoppers when choosing where to shop online this holiday season.

Shoppers are taking advantage of the great deals on eBay to find must-have gifts. Black Friday online shoppers took advantage of eBay’s great deals, including the Daily Deal, $1 Holiday Doorbusters, Bid from $1 and Microsoft Live Search cashback. Consumers also turned to Shopping.com for their holiday shopping needs, searching most often for Nintendo Wii Fit and Nintendo Wii.

PayPal Customers Cash In on Great Offers

Data from PayPal saw 34 percent more transactions than 2007 and showed a 26 percent increase in online payment volume on Black Friday as shoppers cashed in on exclusive discounts and promotions from some of PayPal’s largest merchants, including Buy.com. Shoppers who use PayPal to make purchases on Buy.com will receive up to $20.00 off Buy.com’s already-low prices and free shipping. This exclusive PayPal promotion gives Buy.com customers’ significant savings on some of the season’s hottest gifts while ensuring that you can pay quickly and securely.

PayPal’s Payflow Gateway data shows that on Black Friday consumers are shopping the most during lunch time, with 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM being the busiest purchasing time for the past three years.
