I like the originality behind this game. I think, had they managed to make the gameplay more engaging, this could have had the potential to be quite enjoyable.
Sadly, it sounds like it suffers from taking the "jack of all trades" route; offering many different game styles, but excelling at none of them.
I'm a bit disappointed with their lack of technical knowledge. There were no 4-bit gaming consoles; 4 bit processors are extremely rare as a 4-bit address space only allows 16 addressable memory locations; 8-bit address buses aren't much better. We think of 8-bit as the NES/Master System generation, but in truth, the generations before that were running on 8-bit processors as well.
Furthermore, there is no "128-bit" era because no game machine is using 128-bit processors. There's no real technical advantage to having an instruction set that large or an address space that large.
I purchased Bit-Boy yesterday and "beat" it in just under an hour and a half. Personally I thought it was a playful and fun romp through bygone eras, though I also wish that they had done more with each consecutive era instead of simply make the mazes bigger and more complicated and toss in some prettier graphics.
That all being said, I don't regret the purchase one bit.
i was sorta afraid this was gonna be the end result. It could have gone really right, and funny. Maybe you can't save the game until you hit 16bit level or the current level has a fake open world (with simple quests like "pick up ten red dots") that you get from talking to people. A lot of injoke potential (if they had found a way to make a 'mode 7' joke at the 16bit level, that might have been an instant sell). Alas, now a good designer has a concept to capitalize on someday...
@The Cap'n: That sounds pretty awesome to me. Isn't there another retro looking game coming to Wiiware that pokes fun at old games? I've been trying to remember what it was for a long time now but can't think of it. It looked like a side scroller.
@NeoStarr HD: You show the manufacture you won the game by mailing it back for repairs? Physically impossible, I know, but maybe you can send it back on an SD card.
@The Cap'n: Ahhh your Sega comment helped me figure it out. It's called "Pole's Big Adventure". It's out in Japan but maybe it sold poorly because I cant find anything other news about it.
@Guitarzan2k5 - Bad puns are my business, and...: Yeah, it's a real shame that it's not something a bit deeper. It's a fascinating idea though; I really hope someone latches onto it and makes something complex and original from it.
@Arremer: As if Sega could do something with it now? Even if Sega was still in the console business, Internet digital content would negate any need for a costly access channel.
I am becoming genuinely frustrated that the DSi is getting almost nothing in terms of DLC. Brain Age and Master of Illusion mini-games are all well and good, but would it be so hard for some of these Virtual Console games to be retooled to work on the DS?
@Matt Liparota: They should do what PSN did and allow you to play your Virtual Console games on the DSi. The problem is that there's nothing to identify your purchase on a Wii other than the physical console itself. It would have really helped for Nintendo to have created some sort of persistent account system.
@gold163 (° д° ): That would really help. The Dsi is just begging for its own virtual console, instead of these stupid overpriced minigames and clocks. So far the only DSiware that I've found to be fun was the Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake. It's also sad that there aren't and DSi exculsive games out yet.

I bought the DSi specifically for the DSiware, and while I know it takes a little time for people to adjust to developing for a new platform and make some compelling stuff, the stuff we've been getting is practically an insult. How many calculators and clocks has Nintendo tried to charge us actual MONEY for by now? On weeks when I see more worthless crap like that pop up in the DSiware shop I just want to give Reggie the finger.
@gold163 (° д° ): Well, Nintendo's rewards program keeps track of both your linked Wii and DSI. That could definitely be the start of infrastructure for such a project.
I'd be far more likely to pick up Pulseman on the Wii if I could also play it on the DSI.
@spiderweb1986: Gotcha...what I meant to say is I'D love to see it in English, as I never got to experience the Sega Channel...I just emulated the game. It was like an awesome bonus track to a Megaman game, which I mean as high praise.
@MrGone1980: The import is essentially in English and playable regardless. I'm pretty surprised to see Pulseman getting a US release on a Nintendo system no less. I gotta wonder if this release is in any way inspired by the success of inFamouse. Regardless, it's an excellent game, but the backgrounds are seizure inducing and the game desperately needs more enemy encounters.

Another old Genesis title that consumed many hours of my life was Landstalker. :D

@KylenX: Pulseman and the Sega Channel both came out in 1994. Pulseman uses Japanese text descriptions with English voiced dialogue. You may want to check your facts before calling people idiots. :/
