which is sad since a lot of the posts seem to be saying "this looks good, but that box art really turns me off"
since when are we letting box art determine our gaming habits??
since when does a boxart "looking like shovelware" make the game worse?
the NES Megaman boxes (in the states) were so terrible that they've become cool!
I don't think this box art looks half bad. the ninja and the big robot border on badass.
regardless, I'll wait til I see s'more gameplay bvideos before I make a purchase decision.

It's probably safe to say most of the people here don't.
The problem is, there are a lot of people that do.

When consumers decline to pick up the game because the box art looks like shovelware. :p
And, no, the MegaMan boxes are not cool; if anything, folks are laughing AT them as opposed to with them.

Most of the people who read Kotaku are aware that sites like IGN and GameSpot exist, and (I would hope) would usually check out the reviews before purchasing a title if they've got any doubts on it.
07/17/09
if it's shall we say, novice gamers, they won't be discouraged by something that looks like shovelware.
and if it's veteran gamers then they should know better.
so who are we worried about?
... the people who judge books (games) by their cover. in other words, elitist "hardcorez"
07/17/09
I very much hope you are right.
gamers on the web make me ashamed to be a gamer =P

I see a hot ninja with a sword, a giant robot, and I see a guy who looks vaguely like Duke Nukem, with a robotic body and right arm.
Day One, fellas.

Also, does anybody else wish that Nintendo would resurrect Project H.A.M.M.E.R.? I don't see anything wrong with more beat-em-ups; I never do.

to which these same people will complain that the wii has no good games, or like Activision has put it; games that are million sellers but don't deserve sequels.

I'd actually say that The Conduit, the game itself, looked as generic as its box art. Fun, maybe, but generic as all hell.
07/16/09
Also, the boxart looks a little more 'shovelware' than it does 'Pixar flick'. The logo could be better, and the guy they chose to slap front and center looks pretty horrible and generic to me. Should've went for the robot guy, and included a less generic, more colorful background, perhaps reflecting what type of environments you might see in the game.

Now, the game is more like a "darker" take on the LEGO series of action-platformers - but without the charm.

On the other hand, I've seen people buy Chicken Shoot, so...
07/16/09
Personally I feel they've overdone the cartoony computer-rendered stuff that they aim towards kids nowadays.
07/16/09
I know nothing about this game, but the box art has grabbed my attention.

I am just waiting for the industry to grow out of that stage

Keep in mind the Wii's HUGE casual audience, though. Given that Spyborgs isn't tied into any existing franchises or movies or anything like that...well, even if the game is a good one, if it doesn't look as good as a $20 POS a few spots over on the shelf, which one do you think an uninformed consumer is going to go for?
@ShadowOdin isn't american: Given that this looks like a generic CG movie - and I'm talking this level of generic - hand-drawn would be an improvement.
That said, box art hasn't ever been a huge factor on what I buy. I'm just thinking that the box art here won't help the game's sales outside of the "hardcore"* market much.
*We really, REALLY need a new term to replace this.
07/16/09
how about 'mainstream', 'enthusiast', and 'casual' to describe people who only buy halo/madden, people that buy a wide variety and may or may not consider themselves "gamers" and casual for those who play pop-cap and tetris and solitaire

By reading the article, it seems that dropping it will even make you loose money. That's no good!
Won't making any friends dropping their games left and right.

"I think the Wii can stand a solid button-masher and I think it doesn't need a single motion control to do it."
If the game doesn't need the motion control at all, then why bother developing it for Wii, when it would be a lot better on PS3 or X Box 360? That's nonsense.
If you're going to make a game for a console, you have to play with the console's strengths. Graphical powers is, obviously, NOT one of them on the Wii, when compared to the other 2 consoles. So that leaves motion control.
If you can't implement motion control in a Wii game so that the experience becomes enjoyable in a way that just can't be done in the PS3 or X Box 360, then
don't bother and do it for the HD consoles instead.
If you're going to make it for Wii, then learn from Mad World, a exclusive Wii title that just wouldn't have been the same fun without motion controls, or The Godfather (the first one), a multiplatform game that was WAY better on Wii than it was on PS3 and X Box because of its excellently implemented motion control schemes, even though it was vastly inferior graphically to the other 2 versions.
Hear that, Spyborg guys? GET THE MOTION CONTROLS RIGHT!

Or something like that. I really don't know who developers are catering to when they add waggle. Maybe they're just entranced by the nuance (can it get old yet, please?) of it and lose the ability to think rationally every time it enters their focus.

Wow, link me to the sites you read dude. I'd be curious to see what fantasy sites you're frequenting. I see nothing but criticism of waggle on the gaming sites I read, even when it's unwarranted. In fact, the word itself is an unspoken criticism. Admittedly, there are a TON of shitty games and shitty controls out there, but not all of them are because of waggle. I've played many games on 360 and PS3 with shitty controls. It's just a lot easier to screw up motion controls, or the devs don't care because their game is just a cheap cash in on the Wii.
04/29/09
Not supporting or decrying it. Just... commenting.
04/29/09
It's not the journalists' fault that it's so badly implemented time after time after time, they can't really stop saying poor waggle controls are poor just because it's a common issue.
I'm sure it can be fixed in this game though considering how early on in development it appears to be. The biggest common problem does seem to be how to represent on-screen what actions you're actually supposed to be performing with the remote. Which just adds to any problems of sloppy implementation.

the paragraph with explains the design flaws well - "waggle" has become such a loaded term that it's just not called for unless you really want to kill a game's hype from the get go.
... which, when it comes to the Wii, I think a lot of self-proclaimed "hardcore" media outlets do.
