You know, after actually playing through the new Bionic Commando, I have to say I have absolutely no idea where the 6's that game got came from. Swinging was extremely easy, the game was a ton of fun to play, if a bit straightforward, had great music and while the ending was weak, the rest of the story was pretty cool, not to mention the attention they paid to keeping series continuity.
Maybe I just have more appreciation for the series being a long-time fan (and in the top 3 in some of the challenge trials on ReArmed), I don't know. But that game definitely wasn't awful by any stretch of the imagination.
@Ueziel: I really liked the new BC, too. I think a lot of people wrote it off because of the ill-advised demo and the dreadlocks, which is a total disappointment.
@coreymill: Not true! You only needed to go to the first one, actually. I never went to the second door. I have actually been blocked out of it, but I'm not sure what was different that time...
(goes back to play the old BC)
Maybe it's a difference of game version? I just did it now, too. No need for the second com room.
@Archaotic: It is unfortunate that ReArmed is kinda poopie compared with the origanal. Have you ever played it? If not, you should. Early Capcom classic. It's a little rusty robots in this day and age, but still fun.
@Archaotic: Rearmed kicked my Ass... I, at one point, coudl make it through BC with my eyes closed.
Of course, I make it a lot farther on the old Ninja gaiden than I do on NGS, too, so...
The 2 biggest things rearmed did wrong were removing midget enemies (except for a boss they ADDED) and guys in helicopter packs and butterflies and spiders and huge venus fly traps, and replacing them with robots, a bear trap, or outright removing them (Butterflies and spiders)... That was lame... Oh, and the other thing was removing leveling up.
That could be why you found it too hard. You start with no extra life. In Rearmed, on the other hand, you ALWAYS instantly die on spikes (unless you have boots, and then you died your SECOND time) which removed many of my favorite strategies. Lack of the ABILITY to grind hurt that game.
You know what? While I'm at it, I LOVED the new bosses in Rearmed, but the fact that you NEVER get a chance to destroy a reactor, EVEN IN AREA 12, got on my nerves... They even taunt you about it, showing one in the distance on the albatross...
Yeah the first five levels kind of... well suck I suppose is the word, but once you hit the caves early on the games is pure amazing.
Jumping off a cliff, swing across a huge gap, releasing your grapple, tossing a grenade into a group of enemies, regrappling while still in mid air, flipping through the air, re orientating yourself to a new grapple point, flip again, find your self above the survivors, Death From Above to finish them off, after you hit the ground kick flip off the lone survivor, shoot him in the face before you hit the ground again.
It's like a beautiful free form combat, so immensely satisfying once you get the hang of it.
@Tevor_the_Third: I agree with you on the game actually having the potential ingredients for grace. Once you get the hand of the arm you can kinda fling yourself around willy-nilly - to a point - and there are certain moments when combining this with the game's more violent scenes are really enjoyable.
The problem is, the game's needless backtracking and punishing checkpoint system fubars this whole concept. Because the punishment is so grand (10 minutes or more of gameplay lost, all rewards lost, sometimes a five minute walk to re-do) I never felt the urge to experiment too much, unless I was damn certain I was right at the checkpoint and wouldn't be risking extra wasted time. Trust me, the radiation wouldn't have mattered so much if you weren't punished so harshly for seeing how far into it you could travel.
I think of myself as a pretty "good gamer," especially on the action-adventure front. I've whooped GodHand like crazy and probably went through 2 controllers on that game...that has to count for something, right? Yet BC was still a disappointment, a wasted opportunity to me.
[Small specific example, ignore if you haven't played it: there's a kind of interesting battle that takes place in a library, where you fight a horde of troops that come crashing through skylights and root you out with flashlights in the darkness. During the fight I threw one of my few grenades out at some troops, and was surprised to notice the books on the shelves scatter...I was like Cool! I tried shooting the books, but nothing happened. They only responded to grenades (which are in short supply), but their physics were reallly interesting. I realized how beautiful the fight would've been if they responded to gunfire, imagine walking around after the battlefield with books all over the place, or shooting a guard into the books and scattering them, etc...even throwing them with your arm at enemies! instead, the battle was ugly, and the few books that had fallen off the shelves seemed to represent their developers emotions to a T: "meh. whatever."]
I bought the game on sale for $20 from Gamestop, and after playing for a while, I have formed a love/hate relationship with Bionic Commando. For example, I hate the frustrating checkpoint system the game uses. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten through a particularly difficult area of the game, only to die and have to repeat the last 10 minutes of gameplay. An even bigger slap to the face is that everything you've collected and all of the weapon upgrades you've unlocked are lost if you die prior to the checkpoint. It's maddening.
My other complaints mainly revolve around the weak gameplay The pervasive use of radiation in the game prevents you from exploring in a meaningful or enjoyable way.
Every gun sounds weak, and overall, gun play is not satisfying. It's certainly no Gears of War in the weapons department.
Lastly, the lead character is completely unlikeable. Not only is every word out of his mouth laughably bad and/or bitter, he just looks dumb. I wish the lead character maintained same 80's look as the original. It would have been a cool throwback.
Anyhow, for $20, there is some enjoyment to be had by swinging around and fighting the bosses.
The piano rendition of the bionic commando theme song when you first boot up of the game is awesome. It's a shame the same level of creativity and polish didn't go into the rest of the game. There's so much potential for gold there, it's just a bummer.
I was a huge fan of the Bionic Commando podcast that had the producers and localisers of Bionic Commando. Those guys sounded really cool and spoke alot about how much of a gamble and a cultural shift it was for a very Japanese company to allow Western people to take command on such a big project. Real shame that it didn't pay off and I hope Ben Judd and them get out ok...
the lesson is to understand that when you are putting dreadlocks on your man character and making his wife into a bionic arm *spoilers* any semblance of continuity/adherence to the franchise is pretty much gone and you shouldn't be surprised when your game fails.
@darkos87: Jesus Christ dude...the spoiler tag goes BEFORE the spoiler. Reminds me of that one comedian who made a joke about spelling out the wrong words in front of the kids....
"Those fucking K-I-D-S have gotten shit all over the T-O-L-I-E-T !"
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I like how he just snuck it in there so matter-of-factly. If you've never seen The Sixth Sense, it's like that part when Bruce Willis finally finds out he's a ghost....oh shi.....SPOILERS. WTFOMGBBQ!
Actually a lot of times when shit goes south it is the managements fault. Since remember its the management that is suposed to convince those above said manager in regards to how things with the project go.

@GameBuddy - Doesn't like tomatoes on his sandvich.: yeah, it's the equivalent of insulting someone, then kicking yourself in the balls before they can get the first hit in... I'm not entirely sure I get his point o_0
@FarmboyinJapan: Well teaches them a damned good lesson in regards to what happens if you just shovel shit off overseas in hopes of making it big.
Forgetting ones roots is usually the path to self destruction.
Which is why I personally fear for whats going to happen to the next Front Mission game on the Square-Enix front.
Though Im sure if I play Bionic Commando Ill enjoy it for what it is, though at the same time Im sure Ill also be irritated with the invisible "fry" zones that lots of folks / reviewers were talking about.
@Witzbold: Front mission 5 was the same type of game 6 is gong to be. Also from the music to the story and even enemy design everything fit extremely well into the BC universe, I've played all the different versions of BC for GBC, GB, NES etc and BC onnext gen consoles is pretty damn close to what a bc game should be. Hard, unforgiving and quirky.
The next front mission, front mission evolved is going to be a third person action game.
None of the front mission games asides from the failed MMO were third person action games.
Gunhazard doesnt count since that was side scrolling. Front Mission Alternative also due to that still being a strategy game under the guise of a shitty system.
Well, to learn from your mistakes, your product has to fail.
Shall we pull some sales numbers out, here? And to defute any numbers=quality argument you might have, I present you the average Critic review of an 85, no score lower than a 60. [www.metacritic.com]
Then to refute a 'Critics score doesn't mean anything, the game was rubbish compared to Resident Evil 4'. Well, I personally don't believe 4 was even a Resident Evil game at all anymore. I think THAT game was 'flawed', as far as it being a 'Resident Evil' title. So if we go by my reasoning and your wording, they built a flawed sequel from a flawed game, both of which sold and were enjoyed by a lot of people immensely, disregarding a few complainers like you and me.
Personal opinion? I was playing 5 from 10am launch day to 4am the next morning, straight, in xblive co-op with a buddy the whole time. Phenomenal experience, from a flawed game.
@(Zombie) Komrade Kayce: You can't say a game is flawed it you played it for almost 20 hours straight. Wouldn't you say that's a little bit hypocritical? Granted, Resident Evil isn't what it used to be anymore, it has evolved into a different genre. It's no longer survival horror, it's more of an action game now than anything.
You misunderstood me then. I said 4 was flawed, and most people who go 'Five was flawed, four was great!' don't seem to understand that theres a legion of us out there who don't even see them as Resident Evil games anymore, besides name only.
I'm saying if he calls it flawed, and if I'm willing to agree with him on the grounds that (imho) 4 was 'flawed', then I got an amazing experience out of a crap sequel to a crap game.
Because to assume his opinion is correct, you must also assume so is mine, even if our reasons are different.

Rearmed was excellent though. I was psyched for that from the first trailer and it did not disappoint.
