Stargate Worlds Beta Signups Begin

When the Stargate SG-1 based MMORPG Stargate Worlds was first announced from Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, I had my doubts it would ever even reach the beta stage, yet here we are. The newly-formed publisher FireSky has announced that registrations for the closed beta of Stargate Worlds is now officially open. Hopeful players can head over to their website at www.StargateWorlds.com, register for an account, and have their name thrown into a giant hat from which beta testers will be chosen. They aren't asking for tech specs, so I can only assume the selection process is to be random, or perhaps by which names they like the best. Testers will be the first to enter the Stargate, and perhaps the first MMO players to utter the phrase, "Draw their fire while I complete this mini-game." My only question is can I be the James Spader Daniel Jackson, or am I going to be shoehorned into the Michael Shanks portrayal? This sort of thing keeps me up at night. More »

Sign Up For The Quake Live Beta

Back in February, Id Software and IGA announced Quake Live, a browser-based 'freemium' multiplayer version of the classic shooter. Now that they've wet our whistles with a couple of teaser screenshots, their ready to get our hands dirty. Quakelive.com is now accepting email addresses for the upcoming beta test of the game. Remember folks, beta testing isn't all fun and games.

Beta testers are given early access to the QUAKE LIVE website and game, and will help us test all of the game's features and functionality while offering feedback and suggestions.
Exactly. So if you get accepted into the beta, remember to keep a pad and paper next to you at all times so you can write down your helpful comments for the developers. You're just going to have fun shooting people, aren't you? Me too.

Dream Of Mirror Online Launches Open Beta

From closed beta to open beta in just over two weeks! Aeria Games has just announced that the open beta for Dream of Mirror Online, the cutesy social MMO where you can chose to kill monsters or love on them, making them your pets. Characters can form special bonds with other players, screw around with the six crafting disciplines, feed and care for their pets, or just kill, kill, kill to their hearts content. I spent some time in the closed beta for the game, and while it is sort of simplistic, it is also absolutely adorable, and randomly humorous. Take the introduction to screenshots, where they have you pose with an NPC while you take snapshots like the one at the top of this article. Yes, my character is a girl. A kitty girl, dammit. Elf Online Wants You, Possibly

Hooray! Elf Online is recruiting players for its closed beta! Now what the hell is Elf Online? From Happymmo's web page:

Themed by the confrantation of the Imaginary force and the Evil Darkness force in the Dream Land world, the Elf Online provides a tricksy and relaxd game style with a creative and player-oriented gaming system. Jocose epic quest, risible pets, all kinds of strange shapes equipment, medal exchange system, prank system.
Sounds like...something is happening there. Yes! Even more quizzical is their method for recruiting beta testers, which involves the applicant first posting screenshots or information about the game to five forums, and then replying with links. I've heard of pyramid marketing, but this is pyramid public relations - a great and terrible new force on the internets. You know what? I'll just give you a link. You figure it out.

Aeria Readies Shaiya Beta

Aeria Games, who launched their North American Dream Of Mirror Online beta earlier this week, is readying another MMO beta test for launch later this month. Shaiya is one of the most popular MMORPG's in Korea (aren't they all?), featuring a healthy dose of fantasy RPG swords and sorcery in a battle between the Union of Fury and the Alliance of Light. They promise epic realm vs realm combat , tons of PvP for those so inclined, and interesting concepts like bootleg warehouses where members of opposing factions can meet and exchange wares. The website also mentions executions, which I can only dream is a handy new way of dealing with griefers. The Shaiya beta starts on November 26th, with signups currently being accepted at http://shaiya.aeriagames.com. More »

DOMO US Beta Starts Next Monday

Well color me confused. I thought Dream Of Mirror Online, or DOMO, had already gone into English closed beta, but they meant European, and not North American. Aeria Games is handling DOMO in the North American territory, and their version is going into beta on next Monday the 12th. For a chance at being a beta tester for the rather cutesy anime MMO, simply create an account and sign-up for the beta at http://domo.aeriagames.com/signup. They will ask you a quick series of questions, including "Do you believe in destiny?" I am thinking they were looking for a yes there, though I suppose I will find out next week when my application is rejected. It does sound pretty nifty though. It's like an MMO with a bit of pet sim mixed in, along with nifty social features like being able to declare yourself someone's master and lover. Kind of like Second Life, really, only with a point to it. More »

Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Drops Today

Remember three days ago when Mark Rein said the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta would be out within two weeks? Sucker pulled a Scotty on us apparently, as it is only a mere three days later and we've received word that it's being released today. Right now over at FilePlanet, subscribers can preload the beta on their system to have it ready once everything goes live. I'm downloading it as I type this...like I need another shooter to take up my time between practicing Halo 3 and enjoying Team Fortress 2. I've never been a big shooter fan in the first place, but lately I've developed a blood lust that has me shouting obscenities and calling everyone bitches...bitches.

Savage 2 Enters Beta

S2 Games is developing and publishing the sequel to their ambitious online action RTS , Savage: The Battle for Newearth independently, so the sequel will go into beta when they say so. They say so. Savage 2: A Tortured Soul is now entering the beta testing stage for pre-order customers. What this means is that if you put money down on the game, you'll get a chance to participate in the final testing stages before release. This isn't a try before you buy situation at all - you pay full price and commit to buy the game upon release, going on to help them tune the game for the general public. An odd sort of arrangement, but with S2's focus on community involvement, not a surprising one. They want committed fans with an interest in seeing Savage 2 be the best it can be. I'm just glad the game is nearing release, as I've been looking forward to it since GDC back in March. More »

Hellgate London Beta Signups Are Go

Being the only one writing during the day yesterday means I was bound to miss something important in my quest to do the work of four men all at once. I remember seeing something about the Hellgate: London beta signups yesterday, but then my gaming-information drunk mind carried me off in some other direction, leaving a few Kotaku readers without the necessary knowledge needed to know how to get signed up for a chance at the beta. What I am trying to say here is I deserve a spanking for not pointing you to the Hellgate Beta Signup Page and telling you to enter your email address. Luckily Kotakuite Barry was there to guide me back on the path of righteousness. If you guys run into Barry, give him a hug for me.

Gazing Into Dream of Mirror Online

mirrorimage.jpgDream of Mirror Online is a free to play MMO from Chinese developer Softstar, and one of the most highly acclaimed MMOs in Asia. It features a nifty cell-shaded anime look, with four races, six classes, and six professions to progress through as you play. As you can tell from the gallery below, it sure looks shiny and happy, plus one of the races is kitty-people, so you know I'm in. The English version of the game just entered the closed beta phase last week, and if you register over at Gametribe.com you might get a chance to get into the beta later yourself.

Frag For Cash With Kwari

Now here is one terrifying concept. Take the addictive and highly competitive nature of an online FPS and then add in a system where you get money for kills. That's the concept behind Kwari, a shooter being developed by a company of the same name. Basically, to play you open an account and add some funds. Then during a match, every time you hit another player money is taken from their account and put into yours, and vice versa. The matches are based off of skill levels and stakes can range from a penny to a dollar a hit. For even more fun, self-inflicted damage (falling, blowing yourself up) is also subtracted from your account and added to a global jackpot pool that doles out prizes daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly, with projected dollar amounts for the quarterly pot in the millions.
