Beautiful Katamari Rolls Onto PAL Next Month

PAL players! Well, European Xbox 360 owners! Beautiful Katamari is *finally* rolling onto at least European PAL machines this February. We imagine Australia as well. If you've never played a Katamari game, might be worth checking it out. If you have, well. You've already played it, but better.

Beautiful Katamari DLC Available in Japan/Asia

Beautiful Katamari has barely been out a week and downloadable content is already available for Asia and Japan. Logic would dictate that it will probably show up on US XBL sometime in the coming weeks, but is this a little to early? The four new levels, "Milky Way Constellations", "The Weaver Girl", "Shopping Spree" and "High-calorie Katamari", are available at 200 MS points EACH. So, we're talking over eight dollars all together for the new levels, adding to the $40 plus tax we just paid for the game itself. It seems like a little time between the release of the game and producing the DLC might take the sting off a little but as it stands, it seems a little money grabbing in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Katamari fan and I'm usually pretty ambivalent about DLC, but this just seems like a bad move that is likely to turn a lot of people off and has certainly made me rethink my position on DLC in general. THE iDOLM@STER Clumps to Beautiful Katamari

I went through a phrase, a phase in which I was doing posts on popstar sim THE iDOLM@STER — sometimes every day. I've slowed down and only to only once or twice a month. And with that, I bring you this month's iDOLM@STER post... More »

Frankenreview, Beautiful Katamari (Xbox 360)

We're just outside of Tokyo, Flynn and I, taking a day after TGS to explore Kamakura—a city famous for its temples, and of course, the Great Buddha. After a spontaneous, mislead and treacherous hike through the deserted wilderness, we pop out on the side of a busy street loaded with bus caravans. We'd arrived at the Great Buddha.

And when we finally laid our eyes on the 93 ton, 700+ year-old statue Flynn said, "Never in my life did I think I'd see this. I remember rolling it up in Katamari..." It was a special moment.

Hit the jump for our Frankenreview on Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360: every review you ever need on a game from a franchise famous for rolling up the Great Buddha.

The Best Beautiful Katamari Display in Akihabara

Posters are boring! If you are going to capture savvy Tokyo shoppers' wallets, you must capture their imagination. What better way than to do that through crazy in-store displays. Later this week, Beautiful Katamari will go on sale in Japan. To whip Akihabara shoppers up into a frenzy, Sofmap has a display case with a katamari made from figurines. Besides the ubitiquitus iDOLM@STER toys, there are figurines of girls wearing sailor uniforms and swimsuits. The sign on the display reads something like:

That's mine...!! A katamari of evil corruption!!

AKA a big ball of nerd heroin! Close up after the jump. More »

Namco Bandai Pulls PS3 Listings For Xbox 360 Titles

Some of our more eagle-eyed web surfing readers spotted on the official Namco Bandai Games web site "TBD" release dates for PLAYSTATION 3 versions of both Eternal Sonata and Beautiful Katamari. The latter also included hints about the rumored Wii SKU. Both titles are currently only confirmed for the Xbox 360. Not long after the stories on each title were posted, Namco Bandai hive workers pulled the listings for the non-Microsoft consoles, leaving only the Xbox 360 release dates up.

Clerical error or something far more sinister?! It's hard to think "sinister" when one is discussing an RPG occuring in the mind of a dying Polish composer or rolling things up with a katamari, so we'll remain simply skeptical of the listings. Maybe we will know more after our trip to Tokyo next week.

Thanks to our tipsters for the heads up.

multi-plat blow out

Beautiful Katamari Rolling onto PS3 and Wii

First this, now this: The Bandai Namco Games US page lists Beautiful Katamari as a PS3 title and a Wii title. Previously, the game was supposedly a multi-platform title, but then the PS3 version was apparently abandoned due to porting issues and sluggish PS3 sales. Since this past spring, there has been rumblings of a Wii version, and the game's designer confirmed it was under consideration. Still, Beautiful Katamari was then announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive, and the released box art even carries the "Only on Xbox 360." According to Bandai Namco's site, the PS3 game's release date is TBA as is the Wii one (Xbox 360 should be out in October). Does that mean "Only on Xbox 360" is totally meaningless? If this is true, guess so!

pun definitely intended

New Beautiful Katamari Screens are Hot

Literally. Beautiful Katamari will feature a new Roller Roaster mode in which players need to roll up massive amounts of "hot things," like pizza, coffee and pictures of Crecente. Laws of physics would generally argue that in order to reach 10,000 degrees Celsius, one would need more than a multitude of 100 degree Celsius objects in close proximity. But shhh, don't tell the King.

The 4-player "Thingy Battle" sounds like a good time, in which you compete to roll the most of any one thing. And there are also loads of leaderboards in the game—so many that we expect a Beautiful Katamari Leaderboard spinoff down the road.

Beautiful Katamari's 360 Opening

GameTrailer just posted up the new trailer for Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360 and, according to the site, the PS3. Not that again. I'm glad to see that the game remains bizarre and mildly disturbing.

Namco Announces E3 2007 Line Up

Namco Bandai revealed the full list of games it would be showing at next week's E3 event in Santa Monica, California, from Ace Combat 6 to Soulcalibur Legends to multiple Namco Museums. There is little in the way of surprises, but the listing for Beautiful Katamari, rumored to be skipping the PLAYSTATION 3, is now listed as only for Xbox 360, all but confirming PS3 owners will have to make do with the first two Katamari games. The full list, will plenty of corporate-level descriptions of each, follows. More »

Exclusives Sony Dropped The Ball On

Exclusives. They're important and these days, they're rare. Game|Life's Chris Kohler does a nice job of rounding up games that could've been PS3 exclusives, but ultimately ended up on the Xbox 360 because of boneheaded moves by Sony brass. Let's dive in:

Grand Theft Auto IV — ...Take Two had wanted to continue its long-standing practice of giving Sony a lengthy timed exclusivity on the game, but they didn't want it.
Newsweek says that former Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi's "radio silence" on the issue left Sony's American execs without the authority to make deals, and nothing happened. Same with...

SCEA Prez: "We Don't Buy Exclusivity"

With a recent batch of exclusives that were traditionally on the PlayStation family of platforms making for greener Xbox 360 pastures—Fatal Inertia, Beautiful Katamari, Ace Combat 6, Devil May Cry 4, et al.—some might wonder how Microsoft is pulling it off. The answer? Money and lots of it. From the funding of development to co-marketing dollars to advances on future episodic content, it may be costing Microsoft a pretty penny to secure titles from the Sony stable. How will SCEA counter? We're not... sure. But according to SCEA president Jack Tretton, we can sleep soundly knowing that Sony will never lower themselves to outright paying for exclusivity like some kind of desperate john. More »

Katamari Steers Around PS3; Rolls Up Wii Instead?

Some games just seem to perpetually keep the rumor mill grinding at a pace, and the upcoming Beautiful Katamari is certainly one of them. First there were the Xbox 360 exclusivity rumors, then the refuted XBLA only rumor. Now, IGN is reporting an all new one. More »

Namco Lists New Katamari As 360 Only

Last week, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal pegged Namco Bandai's Beautiful Katamari as an Xbox 360 exclusive. The next day, the kids at Siliconera dug up details that might help confirm Croal's story in the form of an official fact sheet for the game. That sheet, often distributed to retailers and press, lists only a single release platform—the Xbox 360. Total confirmation? Not until the official word hits, but it's looking more and more likely that only 360 owners will have Katamari bragging rights this fall. More »

Beautiful Katamari Details Roll Into Your Life

The lucky bastards over at GameSpot got a chance to do a hands on with the new Beautiful Katamari and brought back some details with them. The game will be available via Xbox Live Arcade and from the looks of it, the gameplay and art style that make Katamari great have remained untouched. There will be a ton of new content though, including eight new playable characters, new music and all new levels. It will be presented in glorious 720p HD and will also include achievements to help pump up your anemic gamerscore. As in the other games, Beautiful Katamari will have a central area where you can access all your cousins, royal presents and save/load your games called Princetown. Clever, eh? More »
