Anyone else playing the beta? It's grand. It really has a great feel to it.
In just two hours with the beta, I have already had a few "magic" moments personally, where I was just thinking "wow. THAT was awesome." Particularly, when another sniper and I were creeping along the long outer edge of the map, and saw two enemies in the distance camped out in a bus. He took the left, I the right, and we simultaneously took those players out. It was just like a scripted moment in MW2, except it was real. It could not have been more perfect. Other moments were just as exciting- piloting the UAV heli, skimming the ground so as not to get it shot down, then suddenly coming face to face with two tanks. Quickly climbing way into the air, and sending a rocket down right on top them, then zooming all the way back to the base buzzing directly over enemy players. Awesome fun.
Anyone else want to form a proper squad, and play this game a little more realistically? At the moment, everyone is just sort of running around death-match style. Still a lot of fun, but I crave a little more organization and role playing.
Anyone else playing the beta? It's grand. It really has a great feel to it.
I am looking for other players with mics who want to form a proper squad, and play this game a little more realistically. At the moment, everyone is just sort of running around death-match style.
Ha, I did that all the time in the first game. You'd be amazed how many people don't check for C4 before they run to defuse those crates. In fact, a lot of times I wouldn't even arm the crate myself. Just slap a ton of C4 on it and set it off. It does like 50% damage to it on its own and doesn't set off an alert. Wonder if you can still do that.
That was awesome. That was SO freaking awesome. Why is March so far away? Why don't I own a PS3 to get the early beta??
Im surprised, the audio has actually gotten better from BC1, which was one of the strongest points of BC1. The crispness of the sound and sound of gunshots in the distance is amazing.
Not to mention the fact that they got real destructible buildings now. Not the fake destruction in BC1.
This is game is singlehandedly going to bitch slap Modern Warfare 2- just before it brings the building down around it.
@TheOmnitron: At least in this beta, only a few buildings can be completely destroyed as seen in the clip.
The rest still have indestructible frames. Red Faction it isnt, but still the general destructibility of 90% of the geometry does both positively affect gameplay, as well as create a great atmosphere and lend a real feel of power to most weapons.
And once again, the sound! when a wall does blow out, the sound of rubble falling around you- even if it isnt really there- really has the effect of making the destruction feel "real".
Haven't played a battlefield game since Battlefield 1942, despite enjoying it thoroughly. QW: Enemy Territory and Crysis multiplayer were the most recent games of that style that I played and they were nice for a short while, but got old quick due to the limited number of maps. Would really like to see a new Tribes game. :/
Bad Company 2 is really looking and sounding attractive though. Might have to check this baby out come the PC release on Steam.
@CMay: oh man, I'd kill for a new Tribes game, loved the 1st two, and the third wasnt horrible, it just lost support quickly and the community mostly went back to T2 or other games
@CMay: Fun with Battleflield 2 last me for almost 2 years... I love it, it's awesome when you have friends to play with as a squad.
I feel I am ahead of current as console gamers are just now wowing with Bad Company 2. When Battlefield 2 delivered the amazing experience about 4 years ago, not to mention BF1942.
I am still waiting to see if DICE implant prone in Bad Company 2 on PC though.
@Ak3k: Have pretty fond memories of playing Tribes 1 at LAN parties with the ambiance of people stringing curses together with my name in the background. That feeling of skipping along the ground at high speed has never really been captured anywhere else.
@Quasimodo X: Yeah, high res/high framerate gaming has been around so long on the PC, console-only gamers are way behind. It's also interesting how strong of a following some FPS games have on the consoles despite the controls feeling ghetto compared to a keyboard+mouse.
PC gamers do get to benefit from console gaming a bit though, as games that normally wouldn't be released on the PC get ports from the 360. Well, it's a good thing when it isn't done poorly anyway.
I really should pick up Battlefield 2, but at the moment I've got enough games that need attention. Left 4 Dead 2 and Overlord II are the current priorities. :)
@MrToblerone: Yeah, there are some great old games that don't have newer shinier equivalents doing the originals justice. Also hoping the new MechWarrior game will be a worthy installment.
@CMay: I agree with you, but I was afraid to say it so frankly, don't wanna get flamed by console fan boys... oh well, to kick it up a notch, Modern Warfare 2 offer not much more than Counter Strike! :D
@Quasimodo X: Yeah, consoles really are great for games designed for a gamepad type input, but when PC-style games get developed for them it doesn't feel nearly as natural. People do manage to get used to the FPS controls, though the console versions of those games tend to require some form of aiming assistance to compensate.
RTS games can work on consoles so long as the gameplay itself is designed from the ground up for the console. PC-Console RTS ports are probably a nightmare to play.
Luckily proper 360-PC ports mostly don't have control issues, since you can just plug in a 360 controller. I know there are keyboards+mice for the consoles which give an unfair advantage against other players, but they are supposedly disabled in many FPS games for just that reason.
@CMay: Oh god please let that be a reality. MW 3, despite the HORRIBLE lead mech by 3/4 of the screen to compensate for lag, was a BLAST to play, and in league matches It was wonderful that you could use the loadouts as per battletech. I still dream If my avatar B. MW4 while a Lot better in terms of netcode was a bit of a letdown due to the weird loadouts.
@KofreZ: Not much of a BattleTech purist, but I know fun when I see it and MW4 (while shiny at the time of release) just didn't have the special sauce. Had more fun with the old SNES version of MW than MW4.
Gigantic machinery wreaking havok and actively demonstrating its weight by making the seemingly solid ground crumble under the pressure has a certain flavor to it that I quite like. Suddenly your weapon of choice fires and you get the feeling that the full weight and force of your mech went into that shot as any lighter machinery would be knocked flat on its ass.
This is the kind of romantic aesthetic that I think MechWarrior needs to bleed, but generally doesn't without filling the gaps with your imagination.
@CMay: You guys should check out the RAD on PS2, that is the best Anime type of robot game I have ever played. (The terrible voice acting is actually quite entertaining) [en.wikipedia.org]
@Quasimodo X: Watched a few videos and if it were presented differently it might be worth checking into, but as is it doesn't look like my kind of game. All of those downtown chaos type games remind me of Blast Corps for the N64. Now that game was great and needs to be remade soon.
@CMay: Yeah from the new MW footage I got that feeling of immense power, and if the city environments really are as destructive as the video showed it may just become the best MW game to date.
Plus it's got a warhammer. <-- That's me mw purist working
@CMay: Oh, I forgot to mention, it's the control and camera makes the game unique. R1/R2 to move right leg forward/backward , L1/L2 for the left. To move forward, you gotta press R1, L1, R1, L1... it really makes you feel like controlling a robot.
R stick for controlling the right arm, L stick for the left. The robots are controlled by a operator in 3rd person perspective, you have to press SELECT to switch to first person perspective of the operator to control the robot. Plus, the robots can transform into a tank and a jet fighter!
Unless you are not into Japanese anime type of robots, I think the game is a must play for robot fans.
@Artibeus: Yeah, that's understandable. It's tricky to adjust to a different control scheme once you're really comfortable with one. The problem is just that if you're good with the keyboard/mouse then it's harder to feel satisfied by the dual joystick method since it's easier to be very precise and snappy about your movements with the mouse.
In the end, so long as it's fun it doesn't matter too much.
@exkon: I know what it's called, but this is the first game I've ever seen show a black screen between changing the view from normal vision to sniper vision.
@Dr Durdon: Since everything is destructible in the game, you need to ask a teamate at the beginning of the match to stick some C4 to your forehead and set it off. This will blow off your eyelids, which will then remove the black screens that simulate the change of viewpoint.
@Yossarian: Any soldier too weak to handle a short period of black screen will most certainly not be able to withstand C4 to the face, much less the heat or other physical stresses of the battlefield. :(
Really though, the fade to black looks more like it's caused by adjusting to the difference between the brightness outside the scope and while looking through the scope.
That's probably fine, but aesthetically it may need to be toned down a bit and it looks like the fade happens a bit prematurely. I can see how it could be distracting.
I'd still stand behind your eyelid removal advice though, if only to watch people run around complaining about all the dust and sand in their eyes.
@Demonbird: Sony is failing right now. But it's partially DICE's fault as well. Sony has to build a VOIP fix for US. They built one for EU this morning. I have three keys, 2 US and 1 EU cause I thought all my keys were bad haha.
@Ackers thanks Brian Ashcraft: Considering that this is Battlefield and Battlefield perfected FPS griefing after Counter Strike pioneered it with a f-cking bang?
Not that I care for that of course *ahem*...*sniff*
But seriously, the only reason I was tipping this in the first place, regardless of whether this is from my tip or not, was because of the magnitude of awesomeness that this video exudes. Every time I see more of the game I get more excited. I can barely contain myself.
I'm in Ireland so my only hope was to get a key from someone else. If you happen to be able get a second key, please be sure and pass it on to me. Then, if we meet on the battlefield as friend or foe, I'll make sure and yield right of way.
@-MasterDex-: That's sucky. Wish I could help. I can also confirm the beta is not active yet, keys are for the moment useless. Looks like 11pm pacific time is when we will all be trying to download it simultaneously, and around 1am is when most of us will give up.
@Mega-Driven: Wait, does that mean that beta keys generated by fileplanet will not work when applied in an EU store? Otherwise, I could generate a few extra keys to pass out to those outside NA. Now that I am thinking about it, if you had a NA PSN account, you could then use the NA Fileplanet key, aye?
@kearneybobs: Yeah, mine didn't work either...nor did the 30 other EU codes I tried that were being posted on the Playstation facebook page which I would have mentioned here if not for me trying every code in the damn list and constantly refreshing. Why couldn't they do it the traditional way! grrr!
Oh well, at least I have the PC beta to hope for. I think I'll preorder it tommorow to try to ensure I get an early code.
@-MasterDex-: Did you redeem it on a US or EU account? I've got a Fileplanet one but I'm busy updating the firmware at the minute, just wondering which account I should redeem it with.
@-MasterDex-: You can access the beta with you Eu account but I'm not too sure as of yet whether or not you can actually play it. I can't seem to find any games myself, on both the US and EU accounts, but when I logged in with my US account, I was asked to make an EA master account, i think. But it won't find any gmae s for me though. You have any luck with it MasterDex?
@kearneybobs: It seems the US beta servers aren't up yet. I'm heading off to the leaba now, too tired to wait up for them. They should be up within the next couple of hours though.
It shocked me to see the roof collapse on the building, since that was one of the few pieces of building that WOULDN'T collapse as well as a few support structures, in the original Bad Company game. I look forward to leveling many a building under a torrent of tank and helicopter fire.
@Salen: I think that was the result of the objective being blown to bits. All the other buildings will have destructable walls but will most likely remain erect.
@Salen: Me too- after the first blast, I thought, hmm. Same preset destructible wall segemnets as the first BC. Then, the roof fell- hallelujah! I also liked that it seemed to persist for a bit, that all the pieces just didnt evaporate immediately. Hard to tell how long the rubble would stay "active" though, as that is right when the clip ended.
@Gen.Grievous: You could be right. But I hope you're not, because seriously, leveling buildings would be awesome. The number of times I wished I could level a building with a barrage of artillery fire until it was rubble was pretty high. Especially when there were targets hiding inside that needed to be exploded.
@Mega-Driven: Yeah, well, I'm sure it'll be more clear once folks get their paws on the Beta and try it out.
.....Holy crap. This game is quickly looking like a contender. Truth is Im not really crazy about Mw2's MP. I know I might get lynched for that but I just dont like its flow. The perk progression is great but its a camping style game that rewards those players with too many incentives, and not enough counter measures for the team getting its teeth kicked in.
I loved Battlefield 1943's play style and mechanics and adding vehicles and destructible enviroments to that along with perk progression sounds like a mighty powerful mix of win sauce.
@Modus_Operandi: the anti camper is the flash and stun now... thats why they give you two instead of one now... learn to use and you will always be Mr. Clean...
