@Malorkis: I'm over 900, so I didn't buy EVERYTHING, but I've bought most. I've skipped most of the country songs except the Country Track Pack from in stores. A handful of stuff here and there that I passed on as well, but approx 910/1000 is a pretty good attempt on my behalf.
Wow, I feel so left out.
I love playing Rock Band 2, I'm an expert singer and I usually impress people with my 99 and 100 percent playthroughs, but it sucks that mostly anyone who plays this game hardcore usually has alot of DLC, usually around 100 or so, and I only have 30.
But I have up on that, though. Now I actually just play Rock Band for fun, and not just high scores. It's awesome that they keep on adding so many songs, especially when they come out with ones I like. Keep'em coming, Harmonix! And give us Rock Band 3 already! Show Guitar Hero 5 how it's done!
@TheSonicGamerFL: Even 100 or so isn't that many. I don't consider myself hardcore, but I've got over 300 DLC songs. A large portion of that was from the Pepsi promo over the summer though.
There's people out there who've literally downloaded them all.
Guitar Hero/Activision should have just focused on releasing DLC (instead of new software and hardware every few months and diluting their brand) because music is what is important not "upgraded instruments" and new discs.
@TheCatInTheHat: to be fair, Guitar Hero upgraded the gameplay, too. Guitar Hero 5 is, gameplay wise, vastly superior to Rock Band 2, except in the vocals. Guitar, bass and drum gameplay, as well as band gameplay and online modes and career mode and overall presentation and graphics blow RB2 out of the water. The animation is better too for the most part, though the drummer's animations still needs a bit of work compared to RB2's.
So, I would say that yes, Neversoft / Activision needs to step up their DLC big time. I agree with you. But I also feel that RB2's gameplay feels really outdated now, so Harmonix needs to step up Rock Band's gameplay, too. And I'm pretty sure they will do it big time when RB3 comes out, but who knows when that will be…
@gurfinki: What is this improved "gameplay" you speak of? It's still shapes coming down the screen. Are you referring to all of the gimmicks like slider, open notes, and 4 drummers?
@semanticantics: although I agree with you that the slider is more a gimmick than anything else, I disagree about the other features.
- Open notes on bass, introduced since GHWT.
- Tap sections, since GHWT.
- Additional notes during sustains,
since GHWT.
- Countdown after un-pausing, since GHWT. Introduced in Beatles: Rock Band, too.
- Real time band vs. band mode, since GHWT.
- Star power activation anytime on all instruments, since GHWT, improved a lot on GH5.
- Expert + mode for drums, which properly charts double bass, introduced on GH Metallica.
- Band moments.
- Challenges on career mode (which consist in more than just beating the songs. Each song has a specific challenge for a specific instrument or band).
- New online play modes: rock fest, perfectionist, momentum, do or die, and another one that I can't recall right now.
- Any combination of instruments you want, which is way, way better than you give it credit for.
- Party play mode, great at, uh…parties. Kind of like an interactive karaoke where you can drop in or out anytime without interrupting the flow.
- The way you get a failed band member back into play is better in GH5 than in RB2, too.
Those are the ones I can recall right now. And no, they're not gimmicks at all. If you've been to a GH / RB party and nobody wanted to play a boring bass part, or to sing, then having the option to play another guitar part is really appreciated.
All of those are improvements that make the playing experience much richer and varied than what Rock Band 2 has to offer, plain and simple.
Don't get me wrong. Rock Band 2 is still a awesome game, precisely because of their DLC structure and their song import methods. But, in the same way that I aknowledge Rock Band's greatness when it comes to songs, I can do the same for Guitar Hero in the gameplay department.
@gurfinki: You hit it on the nail. I also love Rock Band 2, even more so than I love the Guitar Hero games, but WT and GH5 brought a lot of wonderful things to the table, and I'd love it if RB could have some of the features that GH came out with.
Then, RB would be a perfect game. :D
btw, I still prefer the visuals in Rock Band more than I do in Guitar Hero, but GH5 definitely stepped up their game. It looks amazing compared to WT, which looked like TRASH.
request: I would love to see a post that showed early, unused versions of games' logos, typographic design work.
Maybe a bit off topic but this is really important to me: in the rock band logo, the "a" and "n" of band *almost* meet the center, the cleft between the "o" and "c" of rock. Almost. Just a few more pixels to the right, and bam! You would be looking at a face.
Which is why it is not that way, I suppose. Always admired that logo, it's a nice bit of graphic work. It just teases my eye a bit.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I'm at around 310 songs downloaded methinks. Quite worrying the amount of money I've put into RB considering I have ION Drums too.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: Ive got around 600 songs downloaded, including the lego rock band export, acdc export, and the 20 free songs. The rest were purchased, that's a lot of microsoft points to go around.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I've got every one of the songs except for the stuff released this past week. We're talking about songs from Rock band 1, Rock band 2, Lego Rock band, the AC/DC track pack, exclusives from both the Metal and Country packs, and all the DLC available for the 360 since last week. I just need to wait for my paycheck and, hoping I have enough cash left after bills and such, grab this week's content.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: My neighbor is a serious Rock Band fan, and has the ion kit. My first and only experience with Rock Band was on those drums. I had no desire to try the guitar, bass, or vocals; but man! Those drums! Very fun to play with. I really felt that I could learn how to play drums, for real, with those; and was curious how it would be to play them standalone as an independent instrument.
@KatrinaBabalique: I'm guessing you guys with all the DLC to-date are automatically in the Top 100 for the Cumulative Score leaderboard? (Assuming you have played each song at least once)
@Mega-Driven: Speaking as someone who moved to real drums from RB, I can say yes, Rock Band will teach you the fundamentals, some sticking, and limb independence. The ION kit as a "real" drumkit is a bit lacking, but decent for beginning. From my experience, you outgrow your first kit fast, though.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I know I'm not at the level of some here, but if you include All the RB games and DLC I'm approaching 700 songs (once I get around to exporting LegoRB).
And yes, people in this thread, I will totally play quickplay with you.
@fernandosolano:
Not true. You've got account for discounted rates for Track Packs, also there are some songs for only a dollar or 80 Microsoft Space Bucks. That and there is the rare occasion of free songs for download. My guess is that if someone were to download every song available, one could get it for about $1,750. That extra 250 bucks can buy you bigger harddrive to hold them all :)
@TheHeeyyy:
Well, to be honest, they were never with Activision - except for Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 were developed (read: not released) before Activision bought Red Octane, which Harmonix had been partnering with to release the Guitar Hero games. Activision bought Red Octane right before Guitar Hero 2 came out, so Harmonix hasn't really ever had to work with them.
