<![CDATA[ Is PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility Dead? Maybe Not ]]> 90s PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY FLASHBACKThe one version of the PlayStation 3 that currently supports PlayStation 2 software—via emulation of the "Emotion Engine"—looks like it's about to go the way of the dodo. Exactly how crushed should those of us be, should we want to experience PS2 classics on our future PS3s? Oh, totally crushed for now, but the future may provide a glimmer of hope, backing us away from the ledge. PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell says there are "possibilities" the PS2 playing capabilities could come back to the gutted PS3 in the most recent issue of EGM.

When asked by the mag if the now BC-less console kills any chance of offering PS2 games via the PlayStation Store, as it does for original PlayStation games, Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles."

Lempell chose not to talk about "specific plans at this point" but that doesn't mean we can't hope. And pray. And start online petitions.

The full interview, which is actually with Sony Computer Entertainment SVP of marketing Peter Dille—he says backward compatibility is "important to us"—is in the newest issue of EGM, which is in subscriber hands now. We hope that 1UP will publish the interview online, in-full, at some point soon.

<![CDATA[ Best Buy Says PlayStation 3 80GB Is On Its Way Out [Update] ]]> ps3_80gb_rumor.jpgWe've received multiple tips from readers—ones who also happen to be Best Buy employees—who have informed us that the North American retailer hasn't received stock of the PlayStation 3 80GB model for many weeks and is expected to discontinue carrying the model soon. According to our sources, Best Buy stores have also been asked to pull advertising materials related to the 80GB model, currently the only version that features PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility.

Rumors of a 120GB model have been spread to retail employees, but this conflicts with reports from other Best Buy moles who say that internal communications indicate only one model—the 40GB barebones edition—will be stocked after January 28th.

PS3 Fanboy has visual evidence of the notice to employees about the 80GB discontinuation, further proof that backwards compatibility may soon be a thing of the past. We've been bugging Sony about the situation all day, but have yet to receive anything other than a paraphrased "hold tight" about the rumors.

Update: It appears as though it's finally out. The 80GB model isn't showing on Best Buy's site.

<![CDATA[ Xbox 360 Even More Backwards Compatible ]]> armedanddangerous.jpgToday is the day I put my original Xbox to rest. Larry Hryb has posted a list of newly backwards compatible titles for the Xbox 360, and with it my last non-compatible game, the brilliant Armed and Dangerous, now works in my 360. A little stuttering during the cut scenes, but the gameplay is solid and the humor intact. In fact, I nearly missed posting this story because I got wrapped up in playing, so it obviously works well enough. Armed and Dangerous is joined by Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, The Bard's Tale, and...The Guy Game, along with many more, bringing the BC list past the 300 mark. Hit the jump for the list in its entirety. *sigh* Goodbye, giant black box. I don't know I'll fill the space left in my entertainment center left by your passing. Perhaps a small island nation.

<![CDATA[ GDC07: 360 BC Work Slowing ]]> barbie.jpg

It may have been lost in the news yesterday, but right after the Microsoft Blogger Breakfast I cornered Chris Satchell to ask him about the future of the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility.

He said that Microsoft still has a team working on it, but that they won't continue to do so forever.

"At some point we're going to focus less on it," he said. "When you get to the end of this year there will be a reduced focus on backwards compatibility. There are so many 360 games out there. I don't know if it's important anymore."

So that now leaves the Wii as the only console that seems to keep that as an important feature. Is it?

<![CDATA[ Clip: PS3 BC Issues Popping Up ]]>

A Playstation 3 owner put together a little video to show what happens to Playstation 2 games when they are played on the PS3. The end result, he says the video appears to show, is that you get more jaggies and artifacts when playing a PS2 or PSone game on the new console than if you were to play it on the PS2.

He says this is because the PS3 resizes the image at a low resolution with no filtering. I don't know, I noticed the same issue once I started playing PS2 games on my 50-inch high-def television, they just look like crap on a big TV. I haven't noticed a substantial difference between playing PS2 games on either system. Have you?

Judging from the forum posts about this, this particular issue isn't something everyone is running into. Maybe it's TV-related.

<![CDATA[ PS3 Backwards Compatibility Impressions ]]> Playing a PS2 game on your PS3 seems relatively straight forward.

The first time you pop in a PS2 game the system tells you you need to create a small partition on your drive to act like a virtual memory card. Then it just saves progress on it as it would a regular memory card.

After that you just need to pop the game in and start it like you would a PS3, simple as that.

I've tried three or four games on the system and all have worked fine, including SingStar using the USB microphones. I haven't been able to try to do a Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero 2 work around yet because you need to get a special adapter to be able to plug your guitar, or any PS2 controller, into a PS3.

Gameplay seems pretty much unchanged. Though you're now using the PS3, rumbleless controller, to play the games. The console does give you the option of selecting digital or analog mode for the controller, which is nice. But that can't make up for how relatively cruddy the games look after playing PS3 games for the day, but that's not too surprising.

<![CDATA[ Psychonauts Backwards Compatibility Still Coming ]]>

The last Xbox 360 backwards compatibility came and went, and there was much gnashing of teeth. "Where's Psychonauts?" asked the Internet's vast constabulary of fans of a game I've never been smart enough to appreciate. A yellowish loogie was perceived to arc from Microsoft's puckered lips into Tim Schaffer's face.

But don't fret: Psychonauts is coming. Alan Stuart of the Backwards Compatibility team told Aeropause that it's being worked on... nay, is imminent.

We worked on Psychonauts and it was almost ready to ship, but it didn't make the deadline. We continue to work on all games.

So we should see it in the next update, right, Alan?

<![CDATA[ Help Get Psychonauts on the 360! ]]>

I didn't like Psychonauts. That admission alone will cause some of you to wrongfully vilify me as some sort of monster. I'm not a monster. I tried to love it, I wanted to love it! I played two hours of Psychonauts, then quit: the game's quirky humor, much lauded by the same internet that finds Something Awful funny, was lost on me as I stared at the screen, my lips compressed into a grim, humorless line. Upon being forced to fight some stupid tank that I couldn't figure out how to beat, I quit in disgust and went out to beat a baby to death with a bag full of kittens.

Nevertheless, I know a lot of people love it, and are dismayed that Psychonauts can not be played in backwards compatibility mode on the 360. Tim Schaffer is too! And he wants you to help fight back!

I want you to get up. I want you to walk over to your window right now. I want you to open your window up, and then I want you to stick your head out, and then I want you to take in a nice breath of fresh air, and then I want you to close that window and walk back to your computer and click on this link and send Microsoft a heartfelt message. Something to the effect of, "I am a 9-year-old boy in the hospital, dying of consumption, and my last wish is to play Psychonauts on my XBOX 360!" (Please, try to make up your own disease.)

Remember to follow politically correct protocol when you're picking your disease! Trust me on this: you don't want to get the National Down Syndrome Congress on your back.

<![CDATA[ Sony To Cram PS2 into PS3 ]]> Well, that's one way to handle the backwards compatibility problem. Via IGN, Japan's Ultra One magazine is claiming that the PS3 will contain the PS2 core chipset. The plan is to continue working on a software emulator; once that is perfected, they'll dump the PS2 chips for future iterations.

An interesting idea, but it introduces a weird problem: this means that earlier PS3s will be fully backwards compatible where as later model PS3s will likely not be, as PS2 games will be running under emulation, which always tends to be a bit finickier.

Too bad they can't cram a PS1 in there while they're at it.

<![CDATA[ Msoft <3's Backwards Compatibility, Really!! ]]> Ignore the tattooed man in the interview. He doesn't know what he's talking about. Despite Peter Moore's assertations that gamers don't care about backwards compatibility, Microsoft has reiterated their support of old Xbox games.

Msoft Marketeer John Porcaro reports that he went and spoke to the BC team and were told that Msoft is in the testing phase of another batch update which should hit in a few weeks. The list will include at least a dozen titles, JP reports.

What I find most interesting about the post is the fact that it somehow manages to never mention the fact that BC has become a hot topic is because Peter Moore shot his mouth off about it.

Hello, he's the guy running things. Oh, and according to our survey 40 percent of those who voted think it's very important, while only 13 percent either never use BC or think it's not important at all.

<![CDATA[ New PlayStation 2 Version is Moody With Older Games ]]>

IGN is reporting that the silver PlayStation 2 isn't as backwards compatible as its predecessors. Some older titles are having problems running on the hardware. It's an annoyance that a handful of PlayStation 2 games are having problems on the unit, but the majority of games having issues are PSOne games. The last time I turned on a PSOne game, it was probably on my original PlayStation, anyway.
