I love this series, I bought the game on the first day.
I got through about 70 years of the campaign and now it crashes every time I click on a naval unit. I'm trying to invade India; I need ships goddammit.
@sunshine06: Are you sure it's crashing? Is it closing and going to the desktop or just freezing? If it's the latter just wait and the game will unfreeze. CA still have to optimize the late game.
I love the game... a lot... but this is just ridiculous. I can understand and accept technical bugs/issues, but c'mon! How can enemy AI naval invasions just 'slip your mind' in a 5 year production cycle? How can you just forget to allow players to delete saves? Jesus....
@Luke Plunkett: Same here. Had an issue with the nvidia drivers that had been released a day after the release but turning off hardware shading solved that until the new drivers were released.
I have a BFG 8800 gt, and I haven't had any crash issues at all. The only weird bug I have is that the game sound stutters/stops during the cinematics.
That being said, I just don't enjoy the game that much. Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II have absolutely spoiled me.
@erlik: I was thinking the exact same thing but when I was going to comment last night, out of fear of being wrong I checked up about it and found that because of the lower velocity, mortors tend not to have as long range as cannons as thebob999 said.
If you're creating a big army, try to include 2 units each of light and heavy cavalry, place them on the flanks of your mai force and when the enemy moves their main force forward, send your cavalry around them and in against the artillery, they'll be fleeing in a matter of seconds.
@Revenant: I am currently playing through the Road to Independence and haven't realyl gotten into the competitive side yet.. what's going on with late game stockpiling? I don't get it.
@Go Go Gadget: Thugmunk: The Road to Independence is an extended tutorial, not really the main game. To see what they mean, play the "Grand Campaign" to completion: basically, unit costs remain more or less constant while your resources increase exponentially. That happens in many games, but in Empire the economy is the lion's share of the challenge, and it can take a lot of the difficulty out of the final years.
@mwoody: I'd go further than saying a lot. When you're in the late game, you've got unlimited money, you're raking in so much that all you need to worry about is the composition of the army.
@-MasterDex-: Exactly how is it trolling? I want the game, but I don't want to deal with the headaches involved with it right now. I've heard way too many people having problems for me to waste $50 on a game that randomly crashes for no reason. I plan games to have fun, not deal with bullshit that should've been fixed before release.
@Luke Plunkett: Thanks, It awalys amazes me how fast people are willing to jump on the internet hatewagons. The same people that come bitching about a game with a few bugs praise Mass Effect even though it's been in dire need of a patch for nearly a year.
CA are doing a great job with the support on this and they seem to be addressing all the issues people are having with the game. Other developers could learn a thing or two from their example.
@-MasterDex-: I'll praise Mass Effect for being a good game. However, I won't shy away from pointing out its problems either. Especially as I have a number of sound issues and have had them since day 1. So you can see how I'd like to be a little bit more wary to avoid headache inducing games. I've dealt with my fair share of them.
I'm not on a hatewagon. Its called paying attention to all the problems people are having. Even if it works great for you, it doesn't mean its going to work great for everyone. I want the game, as I said already, but I'm not about to drop $50 on it when it looks like there is a good chance of it damaging my fun. Did that with Fallout 3 already, except that was $60 due to buying the CE. I won my copy of ME PC for free, so no real loss there.
I can deal with a number of issues in games. Freezing and crashing are not ones that fall under that list. The games other bugs don't really bother me, but the crashing issue would drive me nuts.
@Derangel: Maybe I jumped the gun a bit fast but in my defense, can you blame me with some of the commenters at Kotaku?
The game has been more stable for me than a lot of other games I've gotten recently but different setup, etc could make a difference.
Sorry for the assumptions. You shouldn't be afraid to pick up the game now though. A lot of the problems people were having that were causing them to crash have been fixed and it's stable enough now that you likely won't experience game-ruining problems.

It is beyond frustrating.
I just want to play the game.

If I can just play it, I will buy it. The demo still doesn't work, but is the actual game patched?
