Very good review, and very accurate. Esp. on the control criticism; I was getting the problem with "wait, he just went left and I swear I was pointing straight ahead" quite a lot. Me and housemate played it for the majority of today (Not sure how far we actually *got*, but still has been incredibly enjoyable)
Although there are still little glitches which we just had to laugh at. For example, during a particular mission involving a large battle between two factions, we saw a large group of people running in a circle. Turns out the combat AI had simply bricked, causing a series of enemy-ally-enemy-ally etc to chase after each other in a perfect circle (broken up on stepping in front of one of them). Was a thing of wonder to behold.
Do you think I should play the first before I give into this second one? Anyone? I mean from reading this, I'm still on the fence but I might roll to the side of must-get...
@Witzbold: Don't...it's worth the full price by far. Amazing game. Cities are awesome and I like that you're not really handheld about how to approach an assassination. It's all weaved into the story, making everything much more organic. Combat's still a tango, but disarming folks is a blast :) It's just a much more charming (albeit more slicey and dicey) game than AC1
Disclaimer: I actually enjoyed AC1, but understood why people thought it was repetitive, cuz it was.
Man I really wasn't going to buy this game, but it looks as though I might just have to pick this bad boy up. I hope it isn't as repetitive as the first one. Great review Totilo! #assassinscreed2
I've been playing the game with the spoken language switched to Italian. Cause I'm cool like that.
I also have switched off all the HUD for everything but races and time limited fetch quests. Wandering around, a little lost, a little confused, everyone speaking this romantic but ultimately alien language to me makes the experience all the more unique. And then I get to the stabbing and things begin to feel a little more familiar. Some early on game play conventions reveal themselves too easily and ruin the digital illusion.
But when I'm clambering over a Florentine chapel which a helpful tourist brochure pops up to tell me was built by so and so of whatever century, all things fall into place. I haven't finished it yet, though I've certainly put more hours into it than someone owning it for less than a day should have. And the fact that I'm perfectly enthralled to just be wandering around, taking in the sights, is itself a special accomplishment. #assassinscreed2
@Psudonym: Wow, this is a great idea thanks! Still haven't bought the second one but I'm playing through the first one right now after taking advantage of the $5 special on Steam. #assassinscreed2
"But its finest achievement is to present one of gaming's most mature adventures, a game that can be played and tell a story at the same time, a game that assumes its players are educated and curious, and willing to be teased and willing to test its limits." -- Totilo
That sounds good, but when in the same breath you also mention The Da Vinci Code and Lost... I am a little scared. The first Assassin's Creed blew the retard-o-meter with its lowbrow conspiracy. I guess that to its credit you could say it used themes that are not very common in video games, but it proved yet again that you can tell an idiotic story with a good subject. #assassinscreed2
@RicoTheSaboteur: I agree with you. Its fair to say that readers of the "Da Vinci Code" are curious, but hardly fair to say that they are educated.
My favorite part of AC1 was that after making it clear that they had hired experts in all three Abrahamic faiths to ensure not to outrage any of the cults, they portray Templars as book burning atheists, a laughable notion. I am curious whether or not the Christian expert had anything to do with the concept. I've only played a half hour into AC2, but I'm dreadful that the Templars are going to exist during the Renaissance, as they should not. #assassinscreed2
@RicoTheSaboteur: I felt like I was playing a really great movie with this game, not in a MGS4 way but in a "im running and killing and it feels like a movie" kinda way, good stuff.
And a great engaging story, something I haven't said often ;)
Looks awesome... more so than the first one. I'm probably one of the few that enjoyed the first one (although I hated the flags and some of the other side missions and could understand some of the criticism) and this one looks like it improves on the first in every way. :DI'll get it on Black Friday, alongside my PSP Bundle. bwuhahaha #assassinscreed2
@ph15h: I rather enjoyed the first on as well; yes, it was very repetitive, but the story was very engaging. It was a game that I would play, put down for a while (months actually), and then get back into it; enough so that I am 2 flags away from 1000G (I consider myself as having 100% though, since I scoured the Kingdom with a flag guide, and none of them were there).
I agree with you about the sequel; it looks much better than the first. When I saw the "backstory" trailer, I got chills from the excitement. Sadly, I'm going to have to wait until this goes on sale...family first and all that. #assassinscreed2
@tenaciousmonkey: Yeah... for me it's health, family, school, first and all that. -_- Hope I make enough on Black Friday to offset the purchase of the PSP and ACII. #assassinscreed2
Liking it so far, even though I'm already bummed that the controls, as mentioned in the review, can be disastrously haphazard at times. I'm sure that'll even out the more time I spend with it, just like it did with the original.
One other (very, VERY minor) complaint without going into spoiler territory: if you're going to tell us we're about to see a beautiful woman? Hey, howzabout you actually show us a beautiful woman.
I have like 5 other games to finish before I play this one, but I'm going to buy it this week anyway and hang onto it. Gotta show love to developers that actually listen to the feedback from players and improve their games accordingly. #assassinscreed2
OMG! did they actually remedy the repitition of the first??? THANK THE LORD! the first had so much potential but was ruined because of repitition. #assassinscreed2

...but honestly, it just doesn't feel the same without Jade's seal of approval. Where the heck is she? #assassinscreed2

Edit: Maybe she locked herself away so she didnt have to hear everyone talk about how much they want to fuck her.

This is the first time I've seen her in any promotional way that has to do with Assassin's Creed 2. #assassinscreed2
