Being a huge ArmA 2 fan and loving the franchise since OFP even though the game is buggy as hell, I have to buy this on day one. Why you may ask? Because I am a retired Army Squad Designated Marksmen and I am glad to see the Army come back in ArmA II. Its nice to see that BIS saw that more people prefer Army equipment over Marine equipment.
Not to say the Marines have crappy equipment... but I prefer my MH-6 over the UH-1 and I prefer my M2A3 over the AAV7 and I prefer my Stryker over the LAV...
And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Apache waaaay more than I could ever love the AH-1...
Gun wise, they all use the same gear... its just the vehicles. Now if they would just finally add the AC-130..
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): I'm using the town computer right now, just stepped out of my igloo for a warm glass of maple syrup. Since there's only one computer in this town I've got the whole town waiting to use it, so I'm gonna step off in a bit to let the other 3 have a go while I hone my hockey skills. Quite happy that it's still snowing here in July.
We do. Toktoyuktuk just invented Rocket Snowshoes. You have GOT to try them. It doesn't take me 3 days by dog sled anymore to go play some MarioKart with my pal.
@globones: Eh? No real biggie to me. Peters opinion's aren't worth getting your panties in a bunch about. That darn South Park though....
Actually, South Park is a tremendously fresh and witty series penned by Trey Parker and Matt Stone who more often than not take a satirical look at our common misconceptions and inherent social biases, portraying our insecurities as well as our follies as people and as a world as a whole. Not like those dirty good for nothing Simpsons....
To those thinking of getting it - I'd hold off a while. I got it today and the performance in it was pretty bad. The visuals are very dated and the game is still fairly buggy. I'd wait until they can optimise and patch it a bit before throwing your hard earned money donw on it like I did.
@-MasterDex-: Reports i`ve read state that it runs much better than arma 1 and arma 1 runs like shit off a shovel on my pc.I`ll get back to you on the visuals when the postal service decides to get off their arses and actually deliver my copy but hd videos of gameplay from german players shows better visuals than arma 1 so i dunno what`s happening with you.
@UFO:Lol, No _>. the visuals aren't pure crap but they are dated. The motion blur is the worst I've seen, luckily, there's a mod out already to get rid of it (no option in-game). Also, force V-sync off from your gfx control panel, helps performance a lot.
I think my biggest gripe with the looks is how jaggy it is. The fillrate method for edge-smoothing is really heavy on processing and there's no standard AA option (although I heard that they'll be adding it in with a later patch.)
It's not a ruined game but I thought it wise to let people know that they're better off waiting a while if they don't want to go through the hassles of bugs and bad performance
Such a wonderful depiction of how I usually end up in these games. Running for 5 minutes without seeing a single enemy...then you get killed from somewhere out in the dark with no clue what's going on.
I seriously need a god mode for playing games like this =P
Go to a milsim airsoft game. Try playing it the way you'd play a regular shooter or paintball. Get some bruises and frustrations. Then next game try listening to your teammates. You will then know how to play games like this.
Reminds me of the good old days of PC gaming with Operation Flashpoint. People who do complain about the lack of action clearly never experienced the thrill of these war sim games.
The video amuses me because it's bascially the exact same experience as in 75% of a player's game-time with OpFlash and ArmA - run around for 5 minutes only to die without any clear cause (the other 25% of game-time being made up of random crashes/bugs).
There was something undeniably great about OpFlash's LAN co-op mode - putting a plan together with your team and seeing it come off spectacularly against the AI - but single-player and the less-structured combative MP modes just left me cold. The fun dwindles swiftly when you spawn 4-5 miles away from the action and your only means of transport is lying in a smouldering wreck on the battlefield.
Hah. World War 2 Online (aka Battleground Europe) would murder you.
Imagine riding a transport truck through the countryside for 20 minutes to get to a battle when the truck flips over cause of a shit driver, and everyone dies but you and two others. And you have to walk the rest of the way.
And yet, surprisingly fun. You see, the more freedom and realism a game has, the more can happen that you don't expect. Believe it or don't, it's the way it is. I got way more amusing/incredible stories out of Ultima Online than World of Warcraft and out of World War 2 Online than Battlefield 1942.
If my console ever got something this grand a scope on they would win my heart forever.
Still in awe over the scope of...everything. Still kinda sparse in terms of enemies, still deciding whether or not I should actually learn to appreciate shooters on my computer or not...I just love controllers so much *tear*
Did some of you not consider that this is a demonstration of the scope of the game rather than a "watch the developers kill a bunch of random enemies in a way that falls in line with pretty much every other preview ever" video?
Looks good, and should be fun.
I'll be holding off a launch purchase based on ArmA and its rather buggy entry to the world, but it will get a by from me eventually.

No idea if there's any reason to buy this instead of just waiting it out for Dragon Rising.

That's a bit like saying you don't want to learn to walk because you love wheelchairs so much.
Sure, it's nice to be able to sit down and roll around, but there's a lot of stuff you can't do without using your legs.

A beta is a software build that you test for bugs. It is expected that there be tons of bugs, or it wouldn't be a beta.
As coblenski said, it's not out yet.
