@Slothboy: yeah you probably wouldn't say that if you'd actually played space invaders extreme. it's not just space invaders, you know. it's not like they just slapped the 1978 original up there and called it a day.
@Kommissar Kayce: Yep, it's more akin to Galaga Legions, though the Space Invaders update plays more like the original game than Legions did for its source. Both are really excellent arcade games and sit well with the better classic remakes such as Pac-Man C.E.
@Ueziel: As long as Minter hasn't crossed into Space Giraffe land, it should be fine. Llamasoft has a great track record. I still believe that people including myself would be more tolerate of Space Giraffe if the visual effects weren't so blinding and distracting.
@tim rogers: I believe everyone here understands that already. Llamasoft's working on the backgrounds alone is still a valid cause for concern given how overly trippy and distracting the background effects are in Space Giraffe.
@voltron88x: They'll play it the same way they do Tempest. A decent analog stick configuration makes the loss of a spinner not as big a deal. The only game I've found which really suffered from spinner-to-analog stick control and made completely unplayable is Kaboom! on the Activision Anthology.

Space Invaders Extreme is not 'Space Invaders' as you're implying.
Go watch some youtubes, its a pretty trippy game.
