<![CDATA[ Amazon's Gold Box Kick Off With Super Cheap SSBB [Updated] ]]> Amazon deals! No, no, no Amazon Nintendo deals! Today's Amazon Goldbox has kicked off with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, originally priced at US$49.99, but now going for $25.99. Whadda steal. Throughout the day, Amazon will be cutting prices on nine — yes, NINE — Nintendo titles. Expected games and times are:

Current - Super Smash Brothers: Brawl (Wii)

6:00 AM PDT - Yoshi's Island DS

8:00 AM PDT - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS)

10:00 AM PDT - Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

12:00 PM PDT - The New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS)

2:00 PM PDT - Mario Kart Wii

4:00 PM PDT - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii, presumably, though possibly Gamecube)

6:00 PM PDT - Mario Party DS

8:00 PM PDT - Pokemon Diamond and/or Pearl (Nintendo DS)

Check Amazon during the day to see if these predictions are true — and more importantly, just how low the deals go.

Eds Note: Slight correction: Mario Kart DS, NOT Mario Kart Wii and Pokemon Diamond confirmed, not Pearl as a choice.

<![CDATA[ Nintendo Gold Box Deals Hit Amazon Friday ]]> Planning on buying any Nintendo games soon? Put the brakes on, pal. Amazon's teasing us with big savings on nine — count 'em, NINE! — Nintendo... things for this Friday, June 27. They say it's a "first time ever" kind of thing. They'll be given the Gold Box treatment that's sure to help you scratch that video game consumption itch. The specifics from Amazon are...

  • At 12:01 AM PST the first deal will be the Gold Box Deal of the Day. Its special discounted price will be available all day only on Friday, June 27 (or until we run out.)
  • Starting at 6:00 AM PST, the second deal will be featured as a Lightning Deal. This special price will be available for the following two hours.
  • Each of the eight remaining deals will also be Lightning Deals. Starting every two hours that follow at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 6:00 PM PST, and 8:00 PM each deal will be available for two hours after it begins.

I'm predicting a Wii Fit blowout! Okay, that's less than likely, but maybe I'll get a few bucks off that copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess I never got around to. What? I'm busy.

Nintendo Icons [Amazon - thanks, Spencer!]

<![CDATA[ Amazon Snags Exclusive Fallout 3 Survival Edition ]]> GameStop and friends are about to get a whole slew of canceled preorders. Bethesda has just announced the Fallout 3 Survival Edition, which takes the regular Collector's Edition and dials things up to eleven. Really there is only one difference, but it's a pretty big one - a life-size replica of the Pip-Boy 3000, the wrist computer worn by players in the game. While not actually wearable (until modders get their hands on it), the Pip-Boy is painstakingly replicated in every detail and retrofitted with a digital clock so as to be useful as well as ornamental.

“This is an exciting day for Amazon customers and Fallout fans,” said Greg Hart vice president of video games and software at Amazon. “We’re delighted to be the exclusive destination for Fallout 3 Survival Edition; this is a great example of the continually expanding selection we offer to gamers.”

I've not ordered a new release video game from Amazon.com in over five years, and here I am pondering the possibility anew. The only thing that could stop me is the price...$129.99 is a ton of cash to spend, and with the regular CE at $79.99, that means the Pip-Boy is costing you another $50...but it's a Pip-Boy! This is a decision that shall weigh heavily in my mind indeed.

Fallout 3 Survival Edition Preorder [Amazon.com]

Bethesda Softworks® and Amazon.com Announce Fallout® 3 Survival Edition

o ‘The Art of Fallout 3’ hardcover book; and

Currently under development at Bethesda Game Studios – creators of award winning The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion®, the 2006 Game of the Year – Fallout 3 is one of the most anticipated games of 2008 and is slated for release this Fall on Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION®3 system and Games for Windows.

<![CDATA[ Amazon Gold Box Filled With 360 Games ]]> Amazon once again maps out an entire day of gaming deals, this time around giving the Xbox 360 fans a little bit of of the love they've been reserving for Nintendo gamers lately. Today kicks off with the Deal of the Day, which is the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year Edition for only $39.99, a damn fine price for those couple of guys who don't already own it.

Meanwhile the Gold Box deals have kicked off with Rainbow Six Vegas 2 for $29.99, which is going pretty fast, to be followed up with Scene-It at 10 Pacific, possibly Madden at 2, and possibly Frontlines: Fuel of War at 6.

The fact that Amazon keeps cranking these video game day deals out means that the gamer response has been overwhelming, so as long as we keep buying they'll keep discounting until we form a giant, writhing, perpetual sale engine, which sounds terribly sticky.

The Deal of the Day? They've got the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock bundle on all systems for only $59.99 ($49.99 PS2), which is like getting the game and a free guitar...sort of.

Along with the Deal of the Day they are also holding Gold Box deals on games throughout the day, with the first - Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party for the Wii at $49.99 just about gone as I write this. The next deal starts at 10AM Pacific and looks to be Rock Band, with the remaining two consisting of a Singstar title, and possibly one of those trays for cooking bacon in the microwave. <![CDATA[ Amazon Says It's Already Sold Out Of Wii Fit ]]> Online shoppers seem to have fed frenziedly on Wii Fit at Amazon.com, up for pre-order as of April 15, with the retailer already claiming its allocation of the Nintendo fitness title is already at capacity. The site says it is "actively seeking more of this product from suppliers" and we suspect that the impression that one will be able to get their hands on the game/non-game day one—as we foolishly suspected would be possible with the Wii itself—is looking less and less likely.

Oh we laughed at them, laughed at the Amazonian purchasing habits, but it's going to be they, the pre-ordering crowd, who laugh at our lack of foresight as we continue to pack on pounds of blubber sitting idly, others becoming lean, strong and happy with their Wii Fit Balance Boards. Thanks for the heads up, Christopher.

<![CDATA[ GTA Soundtrack A Little Too Obscure For Amazon ]]> When Rockstar sat down with Amazon to work out their shiny new soundtrack deal - whereby in-game tracks from GTA IV can be saved to a playlist and then downloaded - they didn't just sort out the money-making end of the deal. Rockstar had to tell them which artists would be appearing on the soundtrack. Then draw some pictures. Then write it down so Amazon could remember, because around 40% of the GTA IV's real in-game music wasn't yet available on Amazon's store (it is now). So one single videogames developer (remember, Rockstar themselves license the tracks for GTA, not Take-Two) had been able to license tracks a multinational music distribution giant had not? Says a lot for Amazon's depth. Or Rockstar's insanely niche tastes. Actually, probably both.

<![CDATA[ Amazonians Buying Wii Fit And Mario Kart Faster Than GTA IV ]]> This is by no means the most scientific of measurements, but GTA IV for both Xbox 360 and PS3 is currently being outsold on Amazon by Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and the Wii Wheel. Things to keep in mind: the Nintendo games are each single platform (effectively doubling their sales) and Wii Fit pre-orders may be more common than GTA IV pre-orders this close to GTA IV's launch (at this point, gamers may be more likely to just go to the store to get their Liberty City fix). Still, we didn't expect Wii Fit's pre-sale numbers to come out on top today on Amazon. At all.

This one sort of snuck up on us, so as of right now the deal of the day, Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, is still available for the low price of $29.99. <![CDATA[ Amazon Hands $50 To HD DVD Suckers ]]> OK, folks. We're almost entirely passed the debacle that was HD DVD. But we thought that we'd betterlet you know that Amazon is offering $50 of credit back to those who purchased HD DVD players before February 23, 2008.

But if we're reading the fine print correctly, there are two super cool things about this deal. First, you don't need to give up your HD DVD player. It's simply free money. Second, there is no start date to this offer, so if you bought an HD DVD player from them when the technology hit the market, you should still be eligible for the rebate.

Here's the full offer from an Amazon email.

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who purchased an HD DVD player from us before February 23, 2008,* you might like to hear about a special offer available from Amazon.com.

New technologies don't always work out as planned. We at Amazon.com value our customer relationships more than anything and would like to support customers who purchased these players by offering a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com.** Just use promotional code PROMO CODE HERE when checking out. The code is valid through April 9, 2009, so you have plenty of time to use your credit. Purchases from third-party merchants on our site are not eligible.

In addition, we'd like to share some of our top offers on Blu-ray discs, HDTVs and other high-def technology and remind you that the Amazon.com Marketplace is available to sell items you might not want anymore as you upgrade to new ones. Also be sure to check out our monthly Amazon.com Early Adopters Delivers email to find out about the latest technology.

* On February 23, 2008, the last manufacturer of HD DVD players announced it was ceasing production of those players.

** Offer cannot be used to pay for special-order titles, e-books or downloadable e-content, wireless service plans, gift certificates, gift-wrap, taxes, or shipping and handling charges. $50.00 promotional credit is per HD DVD player purchased prior to February 23, 2008—up to 10 units for a maximum credit of $500.00.

If you've purchased an HD DVD player from Amazon and haven't received this email, contact them immediately. Apparently it's good for the Xbox 360 peripheral.

<![CDATA[ Grand Theft Auto IV To Feature Soundtrack Music Downloads Via In-Game Phone ]]> Rockstar is taking a stab at the music download business, using Grand Theft Auto IV as the weapon. Yahoo writes today that Rockstar Games and Amazon have partnered to bring digital downloads of the game's radio tracks to the GTA playing masses, using protagonist Niko's cell phone and the newly announced Rockstar Social Club as part of the delivery method.

Whenever you hear something from the 200-plus song soundtrack you dig, send a text message via your virtual mobile phone to a "ZiT" number. Amazon will build a custom playlist of the songs you like, if you're also registered via the Rockstar Social Club. Sure, it sounds a bit clunky, but also a bit cool. The MP3s are reported to be DRM-free, meaning the soundtrack from GTA IV can become the soundtrack for any other game that supports custom playlists. More details on the whole synergy shebang over at Yahoo Videogames.

The ad also claims that the disc will contain twelve episodes but seeing as these things get printed long before the actual delivery date, this may have been done before the rumored cancellation. It still lists the release date of Feb. 5 and the required disclaimer that the date is subject to change. If you're feeling lucky, you can try to pre-order it here at Best Buy or here at Amazon, but just be aware that your money may soon be coming back to you. Today, we have more evidence. SCEA and Konami reps decided not to comment on the rumored game when we asked about it in December, but that doesn't stop retailers GameFly and Amazon from essentially confirming it, two listings dug up by Siliconera. Both companies now feature box art and release dates for the PS2 port, which is expected to ship in March.

<![CDATA[ 'World of Answercraft'? Amazon.com's Askville ]]> askville.gif There's an interesting piece over at Terra Nova on Amazon.com's Askville, an online question and answer forum with a slight twist - you gain experience points and quest gold! For what purpose? Good question - the author tackles the purpose and ramifications of this sort of virtual incentive system with a lengthy essay and plenty of links that I spent a while clicking my way through.

The question we might ask is: why would this matter? Other than for tax purposes or interpreting the language of wagers, do we really need to place those beads neatly in one of two boxes: money or esteem?

If you can exhange Quest gold for an Amazon gift card, then it is money. But if it also "show[s] everyone how active and helpful you've been on Askville" then it is also something else—a token of esteem. So, like many status markers out there that people might pursue ..., Quest gold belongs in both boxes at once. Prizes have valences in market, reputation, and ludic economies.

I am far from an economist, but the spread of RMT and other in-game economic developments, as well as 'ludic' transactions in non-game settings, is interesting to ponder - will the application work outside of games? Do people buy into it? An interesting piece that's worth a read through (and some clicking on the links if you have time).

<![CDATA[ Amazon's Black Friday Voteathon - $79 Wii? ]]> Remember last year when Amazon nearly killed itself trying to sell the Xbox 360 on Thanksgiving day for $100? Well their special Black Friday-ish deal voting game is back, with a new twist. There are six rounds of products, and you get to vote on one from each round. Voters for the winning deal will be randomly selected to get that deal on purchase day. The first round consists of a Nintendo Wii for $79, a 40gb PlayStation 3 for $139, or an Xbox 360 Arcade system for $99. Right now the Wii is winning with a whopping 55%, so it looks like that will most likely be the deal come buying day. Can you imagine not only getting the hardest to find console for Christmas for $170 below retail? Do dream it - be it. Hit the link below and vote!

<![CDATA[ Amazon Delaying Super Mario Galaxy Pre-Orders? ]]> super-mario-box-art2.jpgThis isn't good. From our faithful reader Ben, it looks like at least some Amazon pre-orders of Super Mario Galaxy are going to see a delay of one whole week.
I pre-ordered Super Mario Galaxy 2 weeks ago from Amazon.com. Today I received this in my inbox:

"We wanted to let you know that there is an unexpected delay with your video game order (Order# ###-#######-#######) you placed on October 25 2007 09:26 PDT. Unfortunately, we are unable to ship the product(s) as soon as we expected and need to provide you with a new estimate of when they may be delivered:

"Super Mario Galaxy" [Video Game]
Estimated arrival date: 11/20/2007

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this delay."

I canceled my order so I can buy it tonight at a brick&mortar store tonight after work. No pre-order coin for me, I guess.

Ouch. Did anyone else get screwed by an Amazon pre-order of SMG?

<![CDATA[ Amazon Deal Of The Day: The Warriors ]]> thewarriorscover.jpgAmazon's video game Deal of the Day is as cheap as I've seen. You can pick up Rockatar Games' The Warriors for the Xbox for a mere $5. That's 50% off of the already low, low price of $10. (I should note here that this game for some reason has still not made the 360 backwards compat list) If you can piggy back it on with some other stuff it is eligible for free shipping as well. If you want to go for the whole package deal, they are offering the game and the director's cut of the popular cult film the game was based on for $15.98. A fine gift for any Warriors fan (who's still using an old Xbox). Can you dig it?

<![CDATA[ Who Still Needs A Wii? ]]> oliver_twiist.jpgThanksgiving, Black Friday, Hannukah and Christmas are just weeks away, meaning the currently Wii-less are soon going to face hordes of desperate parents and grandparents in addition to low stock from Nintendo and Super Mario Galaxy availability. Pretty soon, everyone will be hunting for a new waggle box to place under the Christmas tree or... next to the Jewish thing. I've seen more Wii at retail than ever—actually, for the first time ever at a recent trip to Target—but we hear that Amazon will be releasing its recent shipment of Wii Sports playing consoles to internet shoppers this Wednesday. The internet doors open at 10 AM Pacific and I suspect they'll go fast. Consider yourself warned. You might want to do your friends a solid and pass this on. Good luck!

<![CDATA[ Wii Tops Amazon Wedding Gift Registry ]]> Young couples in love who are soon to embrace in the lifelong partnership have one thing in mind: "Will my partner consider it cheating if I have sex with robots when said technology becomes available/attractive enough for me not to mind it so much?" The second thing on their minds, of course, is their wedding gift registry. And the number one registered wedding gift at Amazon is the Nintendo Wii. So in other words, the Nintendo Wii has become almost as important to both men and women as hot, on-demand robot sex.

The Xbox 360 comes in a close second, ranked behind countless Wii accessories and kitchen appliances at number 96. As for the PS3, it's a no show. But in all seriousness, examples like this one prove that the Wii has been accepted by both men and women as an entertainment device for the family. Kudos, Nintendo. Now please begin the manufacture of those robots we were talking about.

<![CDATA[ PSP Slim Available for Amazon Preorder ]]> The PSP Slim, or PSP 2000 if you want to be official and sound like a Terminator movie, is now available for Amazon preorder. It's a weird sensation, probably born from my part-diesel American consumer blood, but I kind of want a new PSP all of the sudden. It's as if this PSP will make me stronger, smarter or better looking—all from the confines of my kitchen's crap drawer—where it will surely end up after two weeks.

There are also two bundles available. Both running $199, you can either get Jack & Dexter (with silver model) or Star Wars Battlefront (with white model).

<![CDATA[ Elite 360/HD-DVD Bundle On Amazon ]]> Well, it seems the bundles are just coming out of the woodwork today, but this one you can actually grab right now. Amazon is currently offering a pretty decent package for a great price. The offer includes an Xbox 360 Elite System, the HD DVD player, a copy of both King Kong and 300 (HD DVD versions of course) for $599. Plus as an added bonus, a seperate mail-in offer will net you another five HD-DVDs for free. Of course the selection is terrible, but you can always sell them I suppose. Considering the cost of the Elite and the player alone come to $630 this is a pretty sweet deal when you add the 2 free movies, the mail in offer and free shipping. Who could ask for anything more? Well, maybe you could ask, but I doubt you'd get it.

<![CDATA[ Price Drop Spikes 360 Sales ]]>

I suppose it isn't too surprising that today's $50 price drop caused a bit of a spike in Amazon sales of the Xbox 360. Though as of this afternoon, it's still nowhere near the 1,000 percent jump the 360's HD-DVD received after its price drop and five free HD-DVD deal.

Currently the Elite version of the 360 is seeing a 164 percent increase, jumping from the 37 spot all the way up to number 14. Meanwhile the 20GB version of the 360 is up 258 percent leap-frogging the Elite in popularity as it skips from 43 to the 12 spot. I was a little surprised to see that the the lonesome core 360, cheapest of the trio, was nowhere to be seen in the top 20. Despite its low, almost Wii-like price, its down in the sales doldrums, bumped up a mere 49 percent from 268 to 179. Hey, I guess consumers are smart afterall.

Oh, wow, since last I posted this it looks like Forza has shot through the roof jumping 11,100% from number 112 to number one in sales rank.

<![CDATA[ Xbox 360 HD DVD Sales Jump 1,000% ]]> 360llaaa-1.jpgSince Microsoft's $20 pricedrop, Amazon has sold 1,000% more Xbox 360 HD DVD players (today the figure reads 200%, while might even mean double the 1,000% figure). Maybe it was the allure of five free HD DVD movies, or maybe it was the possibility of an extra twenty spot in consumer wallets. Either way, this example proves my ultimate theory on consumer economics.

People like cheaper shit.

<![CDATA[ Rock Band Bundle On Amazon - $200 ]]> kittyrockin.jpgAmazon.com has posted listings for the Rock Band Collection for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, and it comes to no surprise to anyone involved that the set isn't going to be cheap. $200 will snag you a copy of the game, the drum set, a microphone, and either a wireless guitar for the PS3 or a wired one for the Xbox 360, with a potential release date of November 20th, which we'll consider speculation until we hear something official. Breaking it down, with the game at $60, the mic at $30, drums at $80 and the guitar at $60, it works out to a savings of some $30 on the overall price, as well as a very sad bassist. Adding in another guitar brings the grand total to $260 or $280 if you opt for the 360's wireless version, keeping things pretty much in line with current speculation. Mind you the prices are still subject to change, and even now these could just be placeholders, but it certainly seems reasonable to me. Having spent this past Saturday at a part that featured drunk people, SingStar and Guitar Hero, I can only imagine it will be totally worth it.

<![CDATA[ Wii Now *Beaming* Money ]]> Forget the Nintendo DS money printing device, Nintendo has, according to Amazon, upped the money making game by allowing money to be beamed from the Wii-remote via Bluetooth technology. Is there any way to stop this money making King of Monsters we call the Nintendo Corporation?!

Apparently, the company has been doing this for months, right under our noses. Very sly, Iwata. Very sly.

<![CDATA[ More Amazon Deals: Elite Beat Agents ]]> EBA.jpg

Not too long ago, Amazon.com started a new feature in their video games section called Deal of the Day where they offer a popular game for a really cheap price for 24 hours. Recently we saw Rockstar's Bully for $25 and several other really great bargains. Definitely a feature to keep your eye on if you are looking to get some great games you may have missed on the cheap.

Today's featured Deal of the Day is Elite Beat Agents for $20. For the record, I am much more enamored of Ouendan! than Elite Beat Agents, but for twenty bucks I might be able to swallow my pride and sit through the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Cher. Combine this with the earlier Castlevania deal and you can get three DS games for the price of one PS3 or 360 game with no shipping! Pretty sweet!

<![CDATA[ PS3 Not So Hot on Amazon.com ]]> PlayStation3.jpg

Amazon.com maintains a list of the most popular, bestselling items on their website that gets refreshed on an hourly basis. At the time of the writing of this article, Nintendo dominates the top four spots with Wii Play, Wii, Nunchuck Controller, and the Wii remote respectively. Coming in at five is WoW: Burning Crusade followed by the Onyx DS at number six. The rest of the top ten list is rounded out with the Xbox 360 wireless controller, Twilight Princess and the 20gig Xbox360. Wow, number fourteen is the SNES? Hmmm...

Now at this point you're probably wondering, where is the PS3 in all this. I thought the same thing and continued to scroll through the first page got to number 25 and still no PS3. So, I moved on to the next page. Ok, there's Wind Waker, Guitar Hero 2, 360 Wireless adapter, Halo 2. Still no PS3... Finally, near the bottom of the 2nd page, underneath the Nintendo 64 at number forty-eight is the PS3.

I have to say I'm rather surprised at this, especially the popularity of the SNES. But, I at least expected PS3 to be on the first page if not in the top ten. Certainly, Amazon is not indicative of the consumer world in general and I'm sure the PS3 is doing better in the stores than say the Nintendo 64, but unfortunately, it doesn't bode well for Sony. Is the PS3 going to be able to pull up it's bootstraps and turn it's bad reputation around? I sincerely hope it can and that the PS3 will eventually become what the PS2 was and still is; one of the greatest consoles of all time.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this one in]
