IE: gaining territories, setting up criminal front-end businesses/ police stations, recruiting members/officiers, gathering resources (cars, money, drugs, respect, media awareness...).
Right now it looks just fine and fun, but it needs more for you to keep on coming back like a WOW. a multiplayer GTA isn't all that compelling. a MMO GTA is. i'm not sure if they've said what exactly you'll be doing in this game besides the driving, shooting and running.
because, honestly, every game has that. what else you got,APB?
at this point, I'm more interested in The Secret World.
@Noodle-Works: I thought there was a story a while ago about this game having a single player aspect where once you, for example, commit a crime, the cops will start chasing you. Nothing major there, except the cops will be other people playing their game, choosing to try and stop you.
I may have completely misunderstood that, but it sure sounds better than nothing but deathmatch as the video seems to suggest.
On a separate note; this is one game that I think would do well as a cross-platform title. Nothing fancy going on, the city looks simplistic, and GTA-style games work great on all platforms.
@tharden33: this game is what the multiplayer in gta4 should have been. Huge gang wars in an open world environment, instead of 16 player deathmatches.
Uh, if this is being published by EA, does that mean this has a chance to come to PS3? I was under the impression it was a Microsoft game and thus a 360 exclusive.
Hmm, I just looked it up on wikipedia and aparently it isn't coming out on 360 at all. Seems to be PC exclusive. That doesnt sound right. [en.wikipedia.org])
They also mention that there's a plan for them to sell this game to Rockstar to be rebranded as a GTA MMO. That would be a spicy TGS announcement, indeed!
"In September 2009, Realtime Worlds announced that ABP will not be coming out on Xbox 360 at the same time as PC. They released the following statement: "ABP will be coming out as planned in 2010 but sadly not for Xbox 360." More recently, IGN asked xbox.com, who said it will still be produced for the Xbox 360 but released at a later date.[citation needed]"
Is it much of a surprise that it has that GTA feeling, considering David Jones, founder of Realtime Worlds, also founded DMA Design, the company that became Rockstar North.
@Mentuss: well yeah, but crackdown didnt give me a "gta" feeling as much as this game does. crackdown to gta is like rock band to guitar hero.. this game doesnt have enough distinction besides the fact that its an mmo.
@shouryuuken: I agree there, Crackdown did differ, while this scarily looks not much different to the multiplayer portion of GTA, albeit with far more players.
Surely there must be something more to it than that, but from that trailer, you just can't see it.
Let's be honest, if I have to rip off a game to make an exciting MMO that is not your average fantasy mash potato, then my first choice would be GTA too.
Especially since the claim they will not have a traditional subscription I will certainly pour some time into this thing
@StagnatedLives: Sony (and microsoft, and nintendo, etc) wont allow those to be used because then they cant sell the peripherals, I.e. you could plug in ANY keyboard and ANY mouse, which means they make no money.
@D-K, it's not butter? no way!: I don't want to sound rude, it just annoys me when people automatically rule out games because they are similar to GTA. Saints Row 2 doesn't get the credit it deserves because most people just think its a GTA clone.
@DTownsu: lol yeah it really is. see.. the thing is, calling crackdown a gta clone would be a little lame.. the premise is different, and although it feels a bit like gta.. the super powers and focus on leaping off buildings and tossing cars was what set it apart.. and made me start thinking of crackdown as something to be compared to and no longer comparing it to gta.
saints row 2 on the other hand, the whole time i played it.. gta came to mind.. and i hate gta. so as you can imagine, i didnt play sr 2 that long.
but seriously, being offended by this is like being offended if someone calls the first perfect dark a goldeneye clone.
@DiskoDanyo: Maybe you should learn to label your opinions as such. Because I don't agree with you and almost any kind of statistical data would not line up with your opinion. (and by statistical data I mean sales, and reviews, not forum trolls)
@DiskoDanyo: How can two football (soccer in the US) games NOT be similar? Nobody is saying to rule out this game because it's similar to GTA. In fact, they said it WASN'T a bad thing. I don't know why you're complaining.
You're saying not to compare one sandbox game to another. Ok. We'll compare it to Street Fighter. Happy?
"This game takes everything Street fighter does... and ignores it..."
I'm really iffy on APB, it looks like it could either be an awesome experience, or just taking GTA IV online and slapping some XP features and nickle and diming you for every piece of equipment you want.
I'll reserve judgement until it's released, I just hope it's not going to be a constant stream of players just running around shooting each other with no point to the game itself.

Seriously, though, I could see some people not being into it, but there are *lots* of people looking forward to Crackdown 2.
This isn't it, though. GTA MMO maybe, but *not* a Crackdown MMO.
