@excel_excel: Damn it! Killing thousands, running from fanyboys, and now giving into your weaknesses by letting others control you followed by exploiting you awesome powers. This cliche ends NOW!
@Fossick: assuming it has some of the AVP2 modes, it'll do better than that!
AVP featured an infection mode where one team played as aliens, the other as marines... if an alien killed a marine then they'd be resurrected as a face hugger and join the aliens (upon killing someone as a face hugger you turn into a chest burster, then over time molt into a more formidable monster)...
It was awesome to slowly pick off marines who weren't cooperating and slowly amass an army that they couldn't stand a chance against!
That said, there's reputedly going to be a co-op mode which should be a little like L4D...
Plus I remember reading on the Dev forums last year that they were taking a lot of inspiration from L4D, so we might get a hoard mode too...
@exion: I don't want to seem like an ass but if AVP set the standard, they don't really need to take inspiritation from L4D as it seems they already had all these ideas in the other AVP games.
I really hate it when people forget other companies did stuff before L4D but still claim L4D is a godsend
@exion: Nothing better than the science lab level ending with the few marines still alive in the basement room just trying to hold on against insurmountable odds.
@Amarrex: That's all fair and good, though none of the previous AVP games featured you co-operating with friends against an army of AI controlled opponents...
Other games had similar mods available, but it was L4D that really brought it to the general public's attention.
THAT SAID, I might be getting confused between AVP3 (Sega & Rebellion) and Alien Colonial Marines (Sega & Gearbox)... it's been a while since I lurked on those forums.
@Spiderbait: lol, That was epic, though that damned mech suit can really make things frustrating for the alien hoards... That level would be infinitely improved if they had an air shaft that opened up behind the bottleneck to stop everyone hiding in the basement and spamming the doorway with the mech's endless fire...
@exion: "That's all fair and good, though none of the previous AVP games featured you co-operating with friends against an army of AI controlled opponents..."
AvP1 (Rebellion) had that, though these days I guess it would be considered a 'hoard' mode.
@Uchikoma: I stand corrected then I guess... I didn't play much of the multiplayer from the original (as most of my friends had moved onto the sequel by the time I got it) but still, there is a difference between hoard mode style waves of enemies, and L4D style progressing through scenarios whilst avoiding the hoards (I'd wager the former being more true of AVP1).
Still, props for the correction... I can't wait for this game and A:CM.
@exion: So, look, you are both right. Quake 2 was (as far as I can remember) one of the first games that truly brought coop to the FPS genre. AVP made it a core feature of it's multiplayer.
L4D hit at the right time, however, because most gamers have broadband access as well as the proliferation of Steam, dedicated servers, etc.
@Hit-in-the-head: Yeah, that is a major factor to consider...
Console gaming is often described, generationally, as different gaming eras (with new eras emerging with new hardware)... On the PC things move a little differently with the constant improvements in hardware and ever forward-creeping benchmarks but the idea is still essentially the same...
It would be fair to consider the widespread accessibility of broadband a calling for a new era in multiplayer gaming. With more people having access to high speed internet and hardware capable of running online-multiplayer games it could definitely be argued that we've moved onto a new generation of multiplayer, wherein the older titles from past generations are no longer relevant to the average gamer (Don't get me wrong, I gush at the mere thought of playing Quake 2 again with my friends, but gamers who don't have that memory to be nostalgic over probably would give it a miss).
So reintroducing features that may have been somewhat present in previous instalments, but making a big deal of them being similar to other current popular franchises (almost giving credit to someone else for your own work... but in doing so riding the success of another popular franchise) brings the title to the attention of the new generation of gamer. Not sure where I'm going with this, but I think I'm starting to better understand some of the comments by the AVP/ACM staff (I still don't recall which team mentioned the L4D influences, though I'm starting to think it was the colonial marines team).
@exion: colonial marines would be a pretty good bet. To be honest, if I were on that development team, L4D would be the first game I analyzed (given Valve's excellent work on essentially forcing people to work as a team).
I have no opinion of the game yet, but I loooove when developers/publishers call their press events "Gamer's Day" when there probably were no regular gamers to be seen.
Sounds like they have their priorities straight as to why many people want this game and it seems they put in the effort. I can't wait to play it for myself.
The guns have build-in ammo counter, why can't they incorporate it nicely to the game so they can make it more immersive? You can barely see the counter here. I would totally turn the hub off if you can tell using the counter. I like games like this when they try to make use of various design to reduce the need for a hub. ie. KZ2 has different bullet clip sounds when you are about to be empty.
ps: i don't usually say this but I hate that guy's tattoo.
I can't see how Marines vs Aliens could possibly be balanced on a console if aliens were allowed the freedom of movement they had in previous avp games, what with their leaping ability and the ability to crawl very quickly on walls. It was hard enough hitting a good alien player with a mouse and keyboard. They're either going to make aliens move a lot slower, or have all the maps consist mainly of long corridors.
@Communist Agenda: They have already said that the alien's speed will be reduced, although there may be a mode included where they retain their original speed.
@DrowningInMercy: Well that's incredibly disapointing. I'm sure the predators were also made easier to see while cloaked since console gamers are going to have a harder time noticing it while sitting far from the screen. All this makes me concerned how ridiculously imbalanced the PC version may be. Then again, none of the AvP games were ever very balanced to begin with.
@Communist Agenda: Aliens vs Marines vs Predators is never going to be balanced and that's where part of the fun comes from.
Marines have to rely on large numbers, Aliens need to rely on quick reactions and Predators need to rely on stealth and strategy.
The way I see it:
1 Predator is greater than 2 Aliens are greater than 3 marines.
If they worked out the auto-balancing to reflect such or similiar, I think it would help the balance.
I get what you're saying about the console version needing to take some liberties for the sake of balance and I too hope the PC version doesn't suffer as a result.
@-MasterDex-: If memory of the old games serves me well enough, it may be more balanced than you say. If a marine sees an alien from any distance than melee, that alien is boned. A predator has more of a chance, but nothing stands up to a marine 20m+ in distance if it has spotted you. I'm looking forward to the 3 way race wars :)
@-MasterDex-: Agreed, just Don't gimp the PC version and I will be a happy guy. I just want some of the developers to remember where their games first became popular and continue to respect that medum.
@Tacticalspoon: I can't remember the marine being so strong at all. I remember the opposite though it was a good while ago now and my memory wouldn't be the best so what you say could be dead on.
@-MasterDex-: I used to be an avid AvP player, and as I recall the game was pretty balanced ( I usually played as Marine/Merc ). The Aliens downfall, aside from fire, was they were... fragile. A few shots was all it really took. The Predators on the other hand were slow, with relatively slow weapons. So... the high weapon damage coupled with the Marine's 180-deg frontal radar made teams far more balanced than one would assume based off of movie canon/logic/common sense. In a 1vs1vs1, every player had an equal chance.
Man, I really hope this turns out great. The Predator hunt sounds wicked, but then again, so did Riddicks version of that mode, and it turned out to be just okay. However the shooting mechanics in that game didn't feel as good as this looks...
Wow! That looks great! It seems like a true successor to the Sierra AvP games of yore.
And speaking of AvP games, does anyone remember the one for SNES? For that matter, does anyone OWN it? I've NEVER, EVER seen it for sale. Only ever saw it for rent. Was a fun game though.
