E308 Simon Jeffery, "We're Saving Aliens For Something Special"

We explained it in detail, why Aliens didn't make E3. But it's so much more soothing hearing the news come in the Anglified voice of SEGA of America's head honcho Simon Jeffery.

Aliens Game Being Written By Battlestar Galactica Team

How many more reasons do you need to get all excited over Gearbox's upcoming Aliens shooter? It's being done by Gearbox, for starters. Syd Mead's had a hand in designing the gear. And now we hear that Battlestar Galactica's writers are behind the story? The good news just keeps on rolling. Seems Bradley Thompson and David Weddle - the show's lead writers - had plenty of spare time on their hands during the TV writers strike, and kept themselves busy writing a "whole season" of TVs worth of material for the game. Excellent.

Sega Dates Alpha Protocol, Teases Aliens

Sega Gamer's Day earlier this week in San Francico stuck to a "blockbusters" theme, reminding the visiting press that they had just launched a video game based on Iron Man and that another based on The Hulk was coming shortly.

Despite the theme, the games shown after the short presentation were distinctly, movie-themed free featuring, two both the upcoming RPG and traditional Sonic titles, Samba De Amigo, Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Valkyria Chronicles and Empire Total War.

While they didn't show it, Sega of America unveiled a brand new IP, a "spy-action" role-playing game for next-generation consoles called Alpha Protocol. The game, a modern day RPG is being developed by Obsidian for Feb. 2009.

The show wrapped up with a quick teaser video showing off what appeared to be a very slick, high-resolution glimpse of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

In the incredibly short video a camera pans away from a clutch of Alien eggs as a voice, obviously the voice of a Marine talks in the background.

One of the eggs breaks open unleashing a young Alien and you can hear the marine say:

"Wait a minute there's movement, looks to be some kind of bug or something..."

Sega promised to have the game at their booth during this year's E3.

Details On Gearbox's Aliens Shooter

Small details they may be, but when they're details on Gearbox's upcoming Aliens squad-shooter, you'd damn well better lap them up. First up, the game won't be restricted to claustrophobic indoor environments. While they'll obviously play a big part, there'll also be outdoor sections as well, giving you a breather from the RELENTLESSLY OPPRESSIVE DARKNESS. It also won't feature your traditional progression through levels, either. Rather than simply advance from beginning to end, some levels will require you to "make a stand", asking you to set up turrets and barricade doors in an effort to hold an area from a swarm of incoming bugs. Sega Drops Details On Aliens: Colonial Marines

They had us at "Alien-based FPS", but Sega and Gearbox decided to go the extra mile and deliver some details on their upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines title, heading to the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 late this year. The squad-based game puts you in the shoes of a United States Colonial Marine, part of a squad that must face an alien assault unlike anything the world has ever seen. The story is written by writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, perhaps best known for co-writing scripts for episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica. Players will engage in squad-based combat with classic Aliens weaponry like flamethrowers and pulse rifles through environments both old and new, including the abandoned interior of the Sulaco - the ship the marines used in Aliens. The game includes a standard single player mode along with four player co-op, allowing players to team up to make things a bit less terrifying. It sounds to me like the Aliens version of Star Wars: Republic Commando, and seeing how that's my favorite non-KotOR Star Wars game of all time, that is a good thing. Hit the jump for more details! New Aliens, Red Faction Games Christened

Next month's Game Informer has the scoop on two big-name upcoming shooters. One is Gearbox's Aliens game, the other Volition's third Red Faction title. While the mag's not out yet, leaving us frustratingly short on info and screens, we can see that both games at least have snappy new subtitles, making it all the easier for us to differentiate them from past titles in the series/franchise. "Gearbox's Aliens game" can now be referred to as Aliens: Colonial Marines. What, I hear you ask, no Aliens, no Predator, no vs? Not a big surprise: we've heard the game is based very closely on the look/feel of Jim Cameron's film and Syd Mead's designs. "Red Faction III", meanwhile, must now be known by its official title, which is Red Faction: Guerilla.

Gearbox Hints At Something Huge

The president of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, has already put the hype train into motion for their next unannounced title today, seeking a senior artist for a project so massive that "when you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one." A currently open job listing at the Gearbox official site reads "trust us, it's huge", pointing to a "megaton" AAA release. So what are they working on? More »

Dead Space Trailer

Move over Alien, there's a new scary... alien in space. GameTrailers managed to nab a world exclusive trailer for EA's upcoming space horror game, Dead Space. I'm a big fan of the survival horror genre but usually my tastes tend towards the Silent Hill, Resident Evil end of things. I have yet, to my memory (which is admittedly poor) played a horror game in outer space much less zero gravity, so I'll be anxious to check this out when it hits next year. Definitely one for lights out...

Mass Effect Alien Primer

The Systems Alliance Office of Naval Intelligence has issued a lengthy Xenological Threat Assessment report, covering the political, economic, cultural and biological factors of aliens likely to be encountered in BioWare's Mass Effect, complete with glamor shots of the various races in action. The document covers 8 different alien societies in staggering detail. The full report is posted after the jump, and it's full of interesting facts, such as:
Turian genetic code is based on dextro-amino acids. If they attempt to ingest human food, which is based on levo-amino acids, they may enter anaphylactic shock.
A truly insane amount of background information, and exactly what I've come to expect from BioWare. They aren't just creating a video game - they're creating a universe.

Majesco Plays With Your Head

You know what we could really use on the DS? A game that exercises your brain. That would be awesome! Good thing Majesco is on point, announcing Left Brain Right Brain for Nintendo's handheld, a game that not only trains your head meats but helps develop manual dexterity as well. The game will include 15 different mini-games created to help develop speed, accuracy, association, recognition, memory , and strategy. Played in book-style, the game requires players rotate the DS in order to exercise both their dominant and withered, unused husk of a non-dominant hand. Between this holiday release and the countless other brain training titles for the DS, by the time the aliens arrive they'll look human and we'll all be giant-skulled ambidextrous mutants who have developed precognitive abilities to the point where we'll have the Twilight Zone queued up on loudspeakers for that auspicious event. Arcade Flyer Art Saturday: Aliens

Konami produced the Aliens game for arcades in 1990, nearly four years after the James Cameron directed movie of the same name. The game was loosely based on the film and players could choose between two different player characters, Lieutenant Ripley or Corporal Hicks although there was no difference between the two except for the graphics. It could be played with up to two people and was controlled with a joystick and two buttons. It was mainly a side scrolling shooter although a few levels had a switched perspective with the characters moving forward down long hallways. The controls were pretty simple with one button letting you fire while standing and the other button allowing you to fire while crouching. More »

Aliens, Predator Killing Eachother On PSP In November

Yes, yes, extraterrestrial lovers, Rebellion Developments is indeed making an Alien vs. Predator video game. This one, brilliantly titled Aliens Vs. Predator, not unlike its Hollywood inspiration of the same name, puts you in the role of a Predator hunter in third-person perspective, hunting down Alien hordes and mostly helpless humans. The PSP release is from the same chaps who brought us the Alien vs. Predator PC game. They're gearing up for a pre-Christmas release, beating the film version by about a month.

Check out five of the first screens in our gallery.

HG101's History of Final Fight Clones

Hardcore Gaming 101 recently published an eye-opening retrospective of Capcom's prolific beat-em-up arcade and console output, all very much derivatives of their 1989 classic Final Fight. While Capcom may not have created the genre—that distinction is uniquely Technos'—they refined it, some say perfected it, over the course of a dozen plus formulaic releases. More »

New Details of Aliens Games

Although Sega hasn't said much about the Aliens game that will be coming out, the developer for the game, Randy Pitchford at Gearbox, has let some of the cats out of the bag. The game, which is based on that classic sci-fi sequel by James Cameron, will be a first-person shooter that follows the character Colonial Marine, a soldier that accompanies Sigourney Weaver in the movie.
