I would calm down. Mike wasn't really using messaging here that gamers can parse. It looks to me that in this context he's got his suit on and he's talking about business and the market.
From a business strategy point of view (ugh - the sort of junk suits think about), if AvP kills, there's no worry to bring Aliens: Colonial Marines more quickly. If AvP doesn't do so well, it will benefit Aliens: Colonial Marines to have a litle distance.
I don't think this statement has anything to do with the quality of either game nor does it have anything to do with Sega's commitment to the franchise.
I'm pretty confident in Sega's commitment to the franchise and I have incredibe faith and trust in the team at Gearbox to deliver the most kick-ass Aliens video game that's ever been made - no matter when it's released.
CM has the potential to be one of the most incredible gaming experiences of all time in my opinion, provided the developers take it in the right direction. Scrapping the single player component is already a step in the wrong direction however. Still, I feel like applying the L4D formula to the Aliens universe can only equal success.
I am a little disheartened that CM will release based upon the relative success of AVP. This can only mean that we're well over a year away from playing CM if not longer... If this truly is the case, how about the devs add the single player back in just for shits and giggles.
Sega know they're going to make more money from AvP than a riskier title like Colonial Marines.
After canning the RPG, they suddenly announced AvP (a game that wasn't even originally part of their Aliens line-up), which was a odd to say the least. Sega had no faith in Gearbox and the devs themselves have been pushing to get Borderlands finished for a while now.
If this game ever gets out, it'll be a freaking miracle. I don't care much for AvP, I just want Marines vs Aliens with a bit of tactics thrown in. It's not rocket science!
@NecronomiconUK: the previews of the new AvP aren't exactly what some may have hoped. Apparently graphically it's sub-par, the marines portion is a run-of-the-mill corridor shooter, and the finishing moves are too similar.
I'm kind of hoping it will flop so A:CM will be released sooner, but then again, it might be a huge disappointment also.
@JustAnotherFan: Hey, JustAnotherFan don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently developed Alien vs Predator 3. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got Aliens Colonial Marines on DS, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...
This looks sorta like those aliens games that were back on the Genesis and the SNES. They were decent enough games except I kept getting lost. I wouldn't be disappointed if that was the case. Top screen is always used for maps anyway.
@Vixtro: If they stick to the "Aliens" storyline, if it were like LEFT 4 DEAD, where you played coop with 4 other people and swarms of aliens were coming upon you, unless your like some MASTERCHIEF version of the colonial marine, I think you wouldnt last very long.
But if you refer to L4d in terms of the idea of playing coop with 4 people but not necessarily swarms or waves of aliens coming at you, that would be cool.
From my memories of AVP you didnt want to fight more than a few aliens atm, and that increase the fear level.
@sovietspartan: Indeed. If the aliens become little more than cannon fodder then they become a lot less scary. Contrast this with the original Alien movie, where a single drone was an unstoppable killing machine that took out almost the entire crew "in less than 24 hours". I've always thought that the whole acidic blood mechanic was a great way of ensuring that you can't just be knee-deep in dead aliens (unless you want prosthetic legs). If you shoot one of these guys to pieces, you better not be face to face with it at the time.
If its anywhere as scary as the original ALIENS vs PREDATOR games were, this might be the new "survival horror" genre reboot which it so clearly needs.
@BritBloke916: It's my fault. I should have said "survival horror fps". The only other fps i can think of is the FEAR series and well it just was never as scary as AvP.
Dead Space is a good TPS, but I don't really think you can compare it to AVP as controls and gameplay were kind of totally different :P
@sovietspartan: I absolutely agree that a "scary" Aliens FPS has the potential to be something very special (although, truth be told, there were parts of Resistance: Fall Of Man that had me all too nervous). If it's well presented and suitably atmospheric, then I'm liable to crap myself the moment that my motion tracker first starts up with that familiar haunting ringing...
@OmegaVader: I dunno, I always thought the first AVP game had a better balance for the Alien character in MP (limited as it may be). Then again, I never really played through SP...
I wish Capcom would release their Alien VS Predator game on the PSN, Xbox live marketplace or Wii shop. I f**king loved that game. I used to spend all my pocket money on that game int he arcades. I've been hoping Lt. Lynn Kurosawa would make an appearance in a Capcom VS. game ever since!

If not then my huge Alien Warrior statue will come to life and turn Sega HQ into a hive.
