Dunno about any of that stuff, but... That's an incredibly badass picture of that man. I feel like he was just challenged to a duel and he's contemplating his choice of weapons.
@starscar.exe: hey, as far as i'm concerned, homecoming was a step in the right direction after Origins (heard about it, never played) and i saw real potential for them to do Silent Hill right, lets face it, SH is a true "every kiss judged against the first" situation, and nearly every fan is guilty of expecting way too much after 2 (in my case 3).
That being said, it still feels like SH will feel...hollow without his music.
@Cerabret100: There was something about 2 and 3. I consider 2 and 3 the 'golden age' of the Silent Hill series. His music was top-notch during that time and his music wasn't as bogged down with lyrics as SH4 through Homecoming have shown us.
For me, I hated the fact his atmospherics had lyrics. I love Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, but her singing has a lot of overdramatics in it and that gets annoying pretty fast. I own the Silent Hill 4 soundtrack and I sometimes skip the songs that feature her voice simply because it doesn't feel scary or haunting like the original score had felt.
Now that he's gone, we can only speculate that the SH series will never be the same. He should just join the Siren team and turn that franchise towards a new direction.
Silent Hill's direction has gone strange places since he began producing it. His soundtracks are still great, but the last couple of entries have been kinda...
Hell, even IIDX has gone in different directions in recent years, heading straight into breakbeat and hardcore territory with the younger, newer Japanese DJ collective. And the old guard will begin to slowly exit, one by one.
I was still hanging on to some hope that it was just a rumor. I can't decide whether the music fan or the game fan in me is more upset about this news.
@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: I could care less who makes the games (as long as the results are good), but I'll *really* miss his soundtracks :(
@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: Well, if you like them, that's fine. Personally, I felt that the series have been experiencing a general decline in quality since SH3.
I have not played Homecoming yet (though I'm going to soon), but frankly, after all this time, I'm not sure if I can expect much from it.
Admittedly, Shattered Memories does seem pretty cool, though.
Let me just say this, Akira Yamaoka's music is absolutely essential to Silent Hill. If they lost him, well, they might as well throw the franchise in the fire.

Ah well, DDR's dead already anyways, and Beatmania/Pop'n have evolved to music beyond what Yamaoka used to make back in the Bemani glory days.
Doesn't give much hope for the future of Silent Hill though :\ Perhaps it will continue to be an offshore-developed series.

My favorite part of each SH release was nabbing the soundtrack and seeing what Yamaoka (and McGlynn) created.

@Scuzgob: No, not the ambient music, the "music" music.

The music plays such a huge role in these games that losing this man will effectively cut out a major reason why the games are so brilliant.
