Kojima should have rushed the dias, stolen the microphone and pulled a Kanye West on this guy, telling everyone that Miyamoto has had the better career. #douglowenstein
Congratulations on the award! I welcome day when we don't need lobby groups like ESA defending out favourite hobby to the unwashed masses. #douglowenstein
I like the idea but I dislike the execution. Requiring both a beta copy of the game and a written pitch instantly disqualifies me. I can write, I can draw my own concept art, and I can talk at length about a concept or idea I'm passionate about, but I can't program.
If the aim is to get the attention of the big wigs for these 'indie' dame designers, then it already cuts the market down to those who would be suitable for a grunt level programmer for these big companies. I know I'm not the only person out there who wants a chance to at least let someone int he biz see an idea I have. This is the closest thing I've seen and its not even something I can enter.
Hating on Activision of course... (not mentioned in the coveted list!)
Just to make sure though, ATVI happens to be the world's largest game publisher.
More on the subject though, if I were and indie developer I wouldn't want to deal with the big publisher for at least a little while. What with Steam and all of the other digital distribution platforms out there one could make a pretty penny sans the middleman...
The pubs only seem to notice such things after they make truckloads of money and then they buy out the IP and give it to a hack dev studio to produce a sequel.
Critical acclaim don't mean much really... it's kind of a Catch 22. In order to make the money you need to get recognized you need the marketing/branding powers of a big publisher.
Don't get me wrong, I love indie games like Braid but if there is a sequel it won't be same if a big publisher gets their hands on it or else the original devs take the time, money and energy to make it (but such is the nature of indie development that gathering the same people is unlikely and will generally cost a lot more money).
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I forgot about that one, to be perfectly honest. I guess I never really considered it indie. Maybe because it made it to the DS, masked among mountains of shovelware. I applaud that one for tight controls, but it still didn't seem like much more than a long flash game.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Braid was a strange issue of the whole being better than the sum of its parts. individual levels were merely "good", but the way the time mechanic fit into the game's overall themes was outstanding.
Still doesn't change the fact that the individual levels were bland.
I still liked it. But not as much as N+. Also, I've never played Cave Story. I've meant to for years now, but I figure I'll just wait for the WiiWare version.
@Monolith: Nah, I also dislike Braid. Too melodramatic for my tastes, and I don't care what people say nothing about that game is original, the time mechanics have been done, and a huge portion of the game just rips from Mario games.
I support My fellow Indie designers, but I wouldn't really call Braid Indie because of how much it cost, N+ doesn't count as indie either since they got money from and was published by Atari.
@KommanderKeith: It's a fine line indie developers walk then. You keep your indie name, but you never get money, or you get sponsored or bought up by a big name, and you lose your credibility.
@Solertia: Not necessarily. "Indie" has different meanings for different people, but in most mediums it means 'independent from large/mainstream developers/publisher/studios/execs/whatever.'
So, Will Wright could theoretically make a game by himself or with a select few people independent of EA and a large development team and it'd be indie (in a sense).
If we're not getting industry figures to host it, you know who should? Morgan Freeman. If you can get the man to do a spoken word version of Barenaked Ladies' "One Week" you could probably get him to do this. I mean, he isn't particularly picky about what he works on, and that's a great thing.
Previously Gamespot used to broadcast these awards without such a huge delay. This sucks because people abroad have to hope on somebody to Youtube the show and what's the point is it to watch an awards show so much later when you know (and probably have already forgotten) who won what. Pointless!
And what is Jay Mohr's obsession with this show? He's the only stinking host apparently. And I know this because unashamedly, Kotaku actually has OTHER articles on Jay Mohr. Who knew?

N+, on the other hand, is an AMAZING indie game, and it's available on anything that isn't the PS3.

Well, surely there must be some line to be drawn of how "professional" you can be, eh? Otherwise wouldn't the whole indie concept be null?

Someone explain how this makes sense.
