Remember back when we reported that Mecho Wars was due out in March? We were a little off. It's available on the iTunes App Store now for $4.99 though, and that's what matters. Mecho Wars is a colorful take on Advance Wars, which tells the story of the war between the Winged Crusade and the Landians that eventually led to the events in the Steam-released Eternity's Child.

I've played it a bit now, and it's a nifty little game that borrows extremely heavily from Advance Wars, with a few interesting twists, like the waterways that freeze over at night, causing careful strategies to go to the dogs as everybody starts walking on water. They've even included single-device head-to-head play, for those of you who don't mind passing their iPhone to a friend.

Not sure how good a judge I am of this sort of game play, but so far the game has a four and a half star average rating in the App Store, and all of those people can't be wrong. It's kicking my ass, but perhaps your ass is more resilient and supple than my own.

<![CDATA[Man Arrested Over Advance Wars Forum Murder]]> A German gamer has been arrested near Frankfurt on suspicion of involvement in the death of a British student, Matthew Pyke.

The unnamed suspect is believed to have had a disagreement with Pyke on Wars Central - a forum for fans of the Advance Wars series that Pyke moderated.

Police allege that the 21 year old man traveled to Nottingham, UK, and gained entry to Pyke's flat where he stabbed the 20 year old student to death. Pyke's body was discovered last Friday by his girlfriend, also a site moderator.

<![CDATA[On Obsessive Gaming Behavior]]> While on vacation in Ireland last week I became quite obsessed. I had already sunk a solid fifteen hours into Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin prior to my journey across the pond, but I found myself sinking to a new obsessive gaming low. I was consumed. My compulsion would not be satisfied until I'd completed every quest, killed every monster, acquired every item and beat the game three times over with each character. Chalk up another 20 hours of my life. And I wasn't really even having much fun.

It was... weird. It's been quite some time since I've been singularly so focused on one game, not really giving it much thought until I dreamt about slaying Castlevania monsters last night. It's rare that I'll even finish a game (and not that uncommon to leave games unopened for months) so to focus my attention on one title, accomplishing (almost) everything is rare. The only other videogame to so completely suck my time was Advance Wars Dual Strike. My game clock sits at about 150 hours, not including aborted missions.

I'm not sure what does it. Why some games click and some don't. Anyone out there go throught this? What games have you been unhealthily obsessed with?

<![CDATA[Advance Wars Origami]]> Kotakuite Cesar C. found us some more cool gaming origami... this time, three-dimensional avatars of Advance Wars units! Face Red Army vs. Blue Army off against one another in a Lego city, making explodey noises with your mouth as the arcing rockets spangle in the sky, then smash the losing army into a two-dimensional piece of paper with your first.

These look a tad more complicated, so zen origami patience may be required.
