I was actually talking about something like this recently. As a kid, high scores and a video-game career mode would have been a great incentive to practice (I play the cello). It seems like it would be very reasonable to create a game with a classical career mode, scores, some type of character creation and stats, etc. Any real instrument could be used with a mic. Content for the game would be community-created and could be customized for specific instruments and skill levels. Someone could, for example, purchase a pack for trumpet level 3. Most of the famous classical music is way past copyright, and so there would be a ton to draw from. Better yet, kids could bring home their practice music and it would let them scan it and automatically convert that into a playable song. #rockband
I actually CAN sing, but yeah, I get really embarrassed. I can also play flute! So...score for me, I guess. Good to know.
I guess she wrote out and memorized the notes? Or snagged some sheet music and memorized that. #rockband
@Kris: It KIND of has a musical staff. If you figure out where it puts each of the notes, I'd wager you can read it like sheet music, albeit with a bit of adjustment. #rockband
@Kris: I imagine it's not really that different then remembering the pitch when singing. If you're good enough that you don't need to think about what note it is you can copy the sound from listening to it. I know a lot of people that can do that on piano #rockband
@dosukoi7: Well, there are people who can identify a note by its sound. She may be one. Unfortunately, I can't. I have great ears, and good pitch, so I can match any note with my voice (or find it on a flute, with a little trial and error); but I couldn't tell you what the note actually is, because for some reason my brain doesn't connect "This note sounds like an A." I never got around to learning how to do that, but not everyone can. I can read music with an instrument, because I know "if you place your fingers like this, you play this note." But it's very different with a voice.
@Kris: I disagree. Everyone that can play an instrument can do it. If you've got yourself a mental block, just smoke up one day and really tool around with your instrument. Trust me on this one; it'll happen for you. It always works. #rockband
@Kris: I'm not going to push the issue, but I believe that only you can set your own limitations. Believing you're incapable of it has simply made yourself so in my opinion. I'd stand by my earlier suggestion.
*edit* I just read that back and I think it comes off a little... rude. Presumptuous, certainly. I don't know you or how you are or what you do, so I shouldn't presume to give you advice. But I see this type of thing all the damn time and I think it just resonated. Like when children say they suck at something and convince themselves they can't do it instead of that they can. Parents and teachers oftentimes even parrot these things back at the child, ingraining it into them.
@Senpuu: No, it's cool. I get what you're saying. I'm to the point where learning a new method like that would be difficult, I think. I was never taught that at all. I couldn't even, as rfriaz mentions, identify something as "perfect 5th." I know basically what it means, but I never took any sort of basic theory class. It's what Aural Skills probably would have taught me in college, but I dropped the class because I couldn't play the piano. They wanted us to play scales and chords by ear on day 1, and I didn't even know what note went with which key without spending time to sit there and count it out. #rockband
@SudiptiEquestridomus: In Rock Band, no. If you cut down the mic volume all the way and set it in front you can get it to work on talkie songs like Sabotage. #rockband
This is probably a really good way to learn how to play an instrument. In fact, All future music games should be about playing a real instrument into a mic, rather then buying a fake peripheral and playing with that. #rockband
@Verno77: If I could jam out the jazz flute solo in Locomotive Breath then I'd be all over Flute Hero! Seriously though, I know tons of people who casually try to learn to play an instrument. An actual instructive game that teaches you at least the basics would do really well imo. #rockband
I forgot how much I hate rockband. The whole clapping BS and how horrible their interface looks. Not to mention every created character looks identical to the other since there are only like 4 cool clothing options and the faces all look the same. Really I can't stand RB much at all.
All in all cool way to do things and good song. I wanted to see her do all of the solos as well... I guess I was asking too much. #rockband
@AD.Munck: There are about 6-7 completely unique faces per gender... The game itself has more than a dozen completely distinct characters build from the character creator options, and that's just the tip of the iceberg...
It's Guitar Hero that has a single face per gender you can modify with sliders... making each and every create-a-rocker look uncannily familiar
and since when does a clean interface equal a horrible one? #rockband
@DrakeDatsun: The whole hammer on and pull off system has been broken since day one. Not to mention the small notes are impossible to differentiate between what is a HOPO or not. Plus you HAVE to love how every venue is the same and how everything makes your highway light up so you can't see the notes. If you get a streak... Light. Solo... Light. Everything is so broken. Not to mention the whole clapping BS on mic. You seriously think that real singers do that? Also that makes it impossible to play an instrument and sing at the same time. Game sucks. Thank you very much. #rockband
@AD.Munck: Man, you're such a bad troll. You're not even trying.
"HOPOs are broken."
No, you just suck and need a hit window the size of a cow's anus in order to play a rhythm game. So you just might have no rhythm. They even widened the hit window for people like you! You know, people without rhythm.
"Every venue is the same."
Oh, you mean that every venue doesn't have some gimmicky "encore animation" crap? We'll mark that in the "pros" column.
"Everything makes your highway light up."
So you're focused entirely on what's happening on the screen instead of, again, keeping rhythm.
"If you get a streak, light. Solo, light."
Streak on Bass? Yeah, it's interface things so that people focusing on their other instruments can look out of the corner of their eye and know what their bandmates are doing. If it's a solo, the guitarist may need help, get ready to deploy star power. If it's a bassist in a streak, you know he's at 6x and can plan a score multiplayer accordingly.
"Not to mention the whole clapping BS on mic. You seriously think that real singers do that?"
Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies would grab a tambourine during instrumentals. So, yes.
"Also that makes it impossible to play an instrument and sing at the same time."
It takes two seconds to go from vocals to percussion. If you're not capable of doing that, how are you able to play any other instrument.
Percussion's not even a necessary thing to 100% a song on vocals. It's just something for the singer to do.
Beats the hell out of being a jack ass on GH's vocal tracks. I literally have to pull a Yoko on every single freestyle section in order for it to NOT dip below 100%. That's what's horseshit.
"Game sucks."
No, everything you've pointed out pretty much says that YOU suck. You can't keep rhythm, you are self-centered and don't keep an eye on your bandmates, you're easily distracted, and you have bad taste.
Enjoy your new Guitar Hero title every month. #rockband
@Phydeaux: I am going to be honest and say I hope you feel big for saying those things. I will not go back an reiterate every point I made. If you read carefully you will see that all of those things I said are opinions. You managed to say so much based off of one small paragraph and yet you made so few points. Everything you said was either a blow to me or Guitar Hero. You stated how I have no skill, how I have bad taste. You sir are farther off than I am. You have extremely bad taste by saying those things.
I can play over 10 instruments. So don't tell me about rhythm. I can keep tempo just fine without a metronome. I don't see how you made the correlation between the notes and rhythm. If the whole screen lights up then you cannot see what note you should be pressing. Make sense to you?
I am amazed how you managed to take all that I said and take them for facts. When I say:
"Every venue is the same."
I do not mean:
"Every venue is the same. - FACT"
You seem to be under the impression that everyone else is up on their high horse as you are. I may have said those things with confidence but I did not mean to say them as if you too cannot have an opinion. What bothers me the most about this... Hold on this deserves it's own paragraph.
You took the things that I said about Rock Band... and somehow took offense to it. You really seemed disturbed that I said those things. I am sorry if I hurt you somehow. I made some comments about a game and you seem to think I stated them about you. You react like I verbally assaulted you. Don't get all butt hurt just because I said some things about the only game you play. Pick up another genre or title. Really if it hurts that bad you should consider opening up and letting that fanboy out. Guitar Hero has flaws too. But I really don't mind GH flaws. RB bothers me. It isn't my type of game. If that hurts you then you need to take up another hobby. People will bash your game no matter what you play. So don't take it seriously and go outside or learn to play a real instrument instead of defending some game.
P.S. I will love my monthly GH games. They add new features and updates all the time. So while RB may have some 9 bajillion songs you still are playing the same rock band. I haven't seen an update in the game until Beatles. Also, while RB may release something like 98 tracks a week or something stupid I don't find 5 of them good enough to buy. So it should say Rock Band with over 12 million songs! (in fine print: 120 of them are actually good!)
^^^^^^^
Opinions
I figured I have to state when I am making on with you. That whole thing is an opinion. #rockband
@AD.Munck: Actually, no, you're backpedaling and now throwing "just an opinion tho brah!" on everything now. It's okay. Everyone can see the things you've said as concrete and are, indeed, absolutely wrong on. Keep reeling, though! You might pick up enough rhythm in those fingers to be able to pull a HOPO without having an entire half a second to do it.
I'm on lunch, now, but when I get back to work, I'm going to rip your post apart.
@AD.Munck: You're up on your high horse. You took the entiee first paragraph to go on a bitch-fest about the game rather than just commenting on the what the girl did in the video. You established a tone that said Rock Band sucked. Then you started stating your opinions as facts. #rockband
@Phydeaux: Do you want the list? Bacause I can spill them out for you. I must admit though that this is fun listening to you just rage on about your game. Like I said. Enjoy it if you want. I have nothing to prove to you. #rockband
@Mommar: Um if I stated my opinions as facts I would have argued with that guy. Saying oh you are an idiot with no skill and so on. I just gave what I thought of the game and he felt the need to contest that. I think this video is neat but nothing more than common knowledge. I have gold starred songs by whistling. Never seen a flute though. Good find.
Is that adequate? #rockband
@AD.Munck: If you think HOPOs are broken, then you have no rhythm. If you have no rhythm, then you suck at these games because they are, indeed, supposed to be, rhythm games.
There are more than a few people that play through these songs and gold star them without issue (only practice!) reinforces that the problem is not with the game, it's with you. Mix in with GH's wide as hell hit window and your preference for that, and yeah, I pretty much have merit to what I say. #rockband
@Phydeaux: I have to say I hope you feel big. Enjoy whatever you say because it means absolutely nothing. Congratulations, you now have less value than before. I do not prefer the wide hit box that GH offers I prefer the rest of the game. I can play through RB songs and gold star them but I need to pluck through the slower HOPO sections. If it isn't a solo they seem broken. Honestly if it makes your dick hard to think you are the video game guitar god I really don't care. Do as you feel plastic fake instrument genius. No doubt you are prolly better than me. Do I give a rat's ass? No.
I like the songs, feel, look, and design og GH more than RB. However you perceive that is fine. But seriously dude just take a breather and get on a real instrument. Realize that all of these games are in fact all inferior to their Konami counterparts. #rockband
@LucasReis: Any instrument should work in theory. If you download Ultrastar for the PC you could do it as well plus you could get any song you want.... and the fact it's free doesn't hurt either.
If you have a Mic on your PC I'd say try that rather than shell out on rockband. #rockband
@LucasReis: I suspect you need both a range similar to the human voice and the ability to hold notes so like... xylophone is out. Clarinet is in. #rockband
@WhatTheFrag: ...Why isn't this true? It's well known that RB only registers pitch/tone (My friend only hums along, and he gets 100%s), and you can see her playing the flute. How is this fake? #rockband
WhatTheFrag promoted this comment
Acebuckeye13: Blasting Zombies and Taking Names was starred
Acebuckeye13: Blasting Zombies and Taking Names was unstarred
@Acebuckeye13: Blasting Zombies and Taking Names: I guess I wasn't clear at the time. What I meant was it almost sounded like they planned to release a flute hero game. As for the other part yeah, they're not working on word recognition, just pitch/tonality really so it's natrual. #rockband
She is very talented and quick on her feet with her instrument to be able to interpret songs like that. I figure it doesn't take her long to pick these things up by ear / improvised line-note-things like that.
I want to see her do this with a Jethro Tull song. ;) #rockband
When I was young, I used to listen to the Offspring laying on my bed and playing along the vocal part with a recorder :-P true story. [peace.ak] #rockband
I have no idea what the hell they could do to accomplish this, but I'll give Harmonix the benefit of the doubt that they know what they're doing. #rockband
