Crackdown and Beautiful Katamari join the list of available Games On Demand titles as of today.

Availability and pricing in your country of choice may vary, but with Crackdown a mere $19.99 USD, I may finally take the plunge. Wait. Nevermind. I have a bout 3,000 games to play before I start downloading Crackdown—and Beautiful Katamari isn't one of them—but maybe your impressive internet connection is up to the task.

<![CDATA[Beautiful Katamari DLC Available in Japan/Asia]]> Beautiful Katamari has barely been out a week and downloadable content is already available for Asia and Japan. Logic would dictate that it will probably show up on US XBL sometime in the coming weeks, but is this a little to early? The four new levels, "Milky Way Constellations", "The Weaver Girl", "Shopping Spree" and "High-calorie Katamari", are available at 200 MS points EACH. So, we're talking over eight dollars all together for the new levels, adding to the $40 plus tax we just paid for the game itself. It seems like a little time between the release of the game and producing the DLC might take the sting off a little but as it stands, it seems a little money grabbing in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Katamari fan and I'm usually pretty ambivalent about DLC, but this just seems like a bad move that is likely to turn a lot of people off and has certainly made me rethink my position on DLC in general.

<![CDATA[THE iDOLM@STER Clumps to Beautiful Katamari]]> I went through a phrase, a phase in which I was doing posts on popstar sim THE iDOLM@STER — sometimes every day. I've slowed down and only to only once or twice a month. And with that, I bring you this month's iDOLM@STER post...

Katamari is known for its catchy tunes. Beautiful Katamari should be no exception! The Bandai Namco's current Xbox 360 exclusive features a sugary sweet song from another Bandai Namco Xbox 360 exclusive, THE iDOLM@STER. Above, that's it in-game in the Japanese version. No reason to doubt its in the English-language one. Can anyone confirm this?

Hit the jump for the song and idols clumping together.

Thanks, Miki!

<![CDATA[Frankenreview, Beautiful Katamari (Xbox 360)]]> We're just outside of Tokyo, Flynn and I, taking a day after TGS to explore Kamakura—a city famous for its temples, and of course, the Great Buddha. After a spontaneous, mislead and treacherous hike through the deserted wilderness, we pop out on the side of a busy street loaded with bus caravans. We'd arrived at the Great Buddha.

And when we finally laid our eyes on the 93 ton, 700+ year-old statue Flynn said, "Never in my life did I think I'd see this. I remember rolling it up in Katamari..." It was a special moment.

Hit the jump for our Frankenreview on Beautiful Katamari for the Xbox 360: every review you ever need on a game from a franchise famous for rolling up the Great Buddha.

graph%284%29.jpgGamespot
Beautiful Katamari doesn't look much like an Xbox 360 game. If anything, it looks like the PS2 game engine upscaled to the brink of exploding...we hoped for visuals that represented some kind of significant advance over those in previous games. The world and things that dwell within it just look kind of fuzzy up close, and while there are plenty of colorful backdrops and square-shaped people, again, all of it seems ripped right out of the PS2 games.
939134_20071016_screen001.jpg
Gamepro

Beautiful Katamari suffers from some of the same goofs that plagued the other titles. You'll still get stuck in tight spots because the camera swiveled behind a wall or table, co-op control still amounts to pretending you share a single uncomfortable body with a twin, and a few of the levels are filled with frustrating opportunities to abruptly end your hard-won progress because you ran over the wrong item.
939134_20071016_screen017.jpg
Gametap

...for Mars, you've got to roll up a katamari that hits 10,000 degrees. The katamari is continually getting cooler, and if you roll up cold things, the temperature goes down even more quickly. And then there are the environment hazards to watch out for, like those panicked fireman who might throw water on you and put out the katamari completely. It's a fun new twist on the katamari levels.
939134_20071016_screen012.jpg
Gameinformer
This installment is also void of the wacky human-based story, and the King of All Cosmos seems to be bored and doesn't have the witty one-liners you know him for.
939134_20070912_screen001.jpg1up
The big addition to this Xbox 360-exclusive title is online versus play (as well as some future downloadable content and online leaderboards). Here you jump in a match with three others and compete to nab the most of a certain item in the given time. The big change-up from single-player action is the addition of a lock-on button that allows you to target opponents before dashing into them, knocking items off for the taking. This mode offers nothing more than forgettable fun, though, at best...
939134_20071016_screen004.jpgHmm, I really hoped for this to be an HD feast for your eyes, even if the mechanic was getting a bit stale. Sounds like a pass if you've played the games before and aren't craving more Katamari.

<![CDATA[The Best Beautiful Katamari Display in Akihabara]]> Posters are boring! If you are going to capture savvy Tokyo shoppers' wallets, you must capture their imagination. What better way than to do that through crazy in-store displays. Later this week, Beautiful Katamari will go on sale in Japan. To whip Akihabara shoppers up into a frenzy, Sofmap has a display case with a katamari made from figurines. Besides the ubitiquitus iDOLM@STER toys, there are figurines of girls wearing sailor uniforms and swimsuits. The sign on the display reads something like:

That's mine...!! A katamari of evil corruption!!

AKA a big ball of nerd heroin! Close up after the jump.

<![CDATA[Namco Bandai Pulls PS3 Listings For Xbox 360 Titles]]> Some of our more eagle-eyed web surfing readers spotted on the official Namco Bandai Games web site "TBD" release dates for PLAYSTATION 3 versions of both Eternal Sonata and Beautiful Katamari. The latter also included hints about the rumored Wii SKU. Both titles are currently only confirmed for the Xbox 360. Not long after the stories on each title were posted, Namco Bandai hive workers pulled the listings for the non-Microsoft consoles, leaving only the Xbox 360 release dates up.

Clerical error or something far more sinister?! It's hard to think "sinister" when one is discussing an RPG occuring in the mind of a dying Polish composer or rolling things up with a katamari, so we'll remain simply skeptical of the listings. Maybe we will know more after our trip to Tokyo next week.

Thanks to our tipsters for the heads up.

<![CDATA[Beautiful Katamari Rolling onto PS3 and Wii]]> First this, now this: The Bandai Namco Games US page lists Beautiful Katamari as a PS3 title and a Wii title. Previously, the game was supposedly a multi-platform title, but then the PS3 version was apparently abandoned due to porting issues and sluggish PS3 sales. Since this past spring, there has been rumblings of a Wii version, and the game's designer confirmed it was under consideration. Still, Beautiful Katamari was then announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive, and the released box art even carries the "Only on Xbox 360." According to Bandai Namco's site, the PS3 game's release date is TBA as is the Wii one (Xbox 360 should be out in October). Does that mean "Only on Xbox 360" is totally meaningless? If this is true, guess so!

<![CDATA[New Beautiful Katamari Screens are Hot]]> Literally. Beautiful Katamari will feature a new Roller Roaster mode in which players need to roll up massive amounts of "hot things," like pizza, coffee and pictures of Crecente. Laws of physics would generally argue that in order to reach 10,000 degrees Celsius, one would need more than a multitude of 100 degree Celsius objects in close proximity. But shhh, don't tell the King.

The 4-player "Thingy Battle" sounds like a good time, in which you compete to roll the most of any one thing. And there are also loads of leaderboards in the game—so many that we expect a Beautiful Katamari Leaderboard spinoff down the road.

<![CDATA[Exclusives Sony Dropped The Ball On]]> Exclusives. They're important and these days, they're rare. Game|Life's Chris Kohler does a nice job of rounding up games that could've been PS3 exclusives, but ultimately ended up on the Xbox 360 because of boneheaded moves by Sony brass. Let's dive in:

Grand Theft Auto IV — ...Take Two had wanted to continue its long-standing practice of giving Sony a lengthy timed exclusivity on the game, but they didn't want it.
Newsweek says that former Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi's "radio silence" on the issue left Sony's American execs without the authority to make deals, and nothing happened. Same with...

Assassin's Creed — Again, Newsweek revealed that Ubisoft had actually gone to Sony with an offer to make the game a PlayStation 3 exclusive. Although Sony did go through the trouble of asking Ubisoft to make it seem as if their multiplatform action game Assassin's Creed was indeed PS3 exclusive , it came out shortly after E3 that it would ship simultaneously on both platforms.

Not to mention *deep breath* Devil May Cry IV, Virtua Fighter 5, Beautiful Katamari and Fatal Inertia. Somewhere along the line, Sony forgot that people play games, not hardware. Curious to see if Sony can hang on to those remaining third party exclusives. They better.

<![CDATA[SCEA Prez: "We Don't Buy Exclusivity"]]> With a recent batch of exclusives that were traditionally on the PlayStation family of platforms making for greener Xbox 360 pastures—Fatal Inertia, Beautiful Katamari, Ace Combat 6, Devil May Cry 4, et al.—some might wonder how Microsoft is pulling it off. The answer? Money and lots of it. From the funding of development to co-marketing dollars to advances on future episodic content, it may be costing Microsoft a pretty penny to secure titles from the Sony stable. How will SCEA counter? We're not... sure. But according to SCEA president Jack Tretton, we can sleep soundly knowing that Sony will never lower themselves to outright paying for exclusivity like some kind of desperate john.

In an interview with PSM, Tretton revealed that "We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors. We don't buy exclusivity. We don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform. We earn it." It's like respect, I suppose, but for publishers and hardware manufacturer executives. A rare breed of respect.

Tretton also evaluated the third and first party health of the Big Three, stating that "Microsoft is too dependent on the third-party community, and Nintendo is too [dependent] on first-party. We like to feel that we got a pretty good mix." You know what's a better mix, Jack? Those Planters party peanuts with the pistachios. Man, those are good.

Look for the full interview in the latest issue of PSM.

<![CDATA[Katamari Steers Around PS3; Rolls Up Wii Instead?]]> Some games just seem to perpetually keep the rumor mill grinding at a pace, and the upcoming Beautiful Katamari is certainly one of them. First there were the Xbox 360 exclusivity rumors, then the refuted XBLA only rumor. Now, IGN is reporting an all new one.

According to IGN, "sources close to Namco Bandai" are reporting that work has stopped on the PS3 version and those resources are being channeled into a version of the quirky rolling game for the Wii. These "close sources" cite porting issues and the PS3's poor sales performance as reasons for the cancellation.

So is it true? Is it rumor? It's hard to tell with E3 only a week and a half away and the entire game industry worked up into a frenzy, but IGN's sources are generally pretty reliable. All will likely be revealed come Namco Bandai's press conference on the 12th, so keep your eyes on Kotaku during E3 and we'll be sure to bring you the final word when it happens.

<![CDATA[Namco Lists New Katamari As 360 Only]]> Last week, Newsweek's N'Gai Croal pegged Namco Bandai's Beautiful Katamari as an Xbox 360 exclusive. The next day, the kids at Siliconera dug up details that might help confirm Croal's story in the form of an official fact sheet for the game. That sheet, often distributed to retailers and press, lists only a single release platform—the Xbox 360. Total confirmation? Not until the official word hits, but it's looking more and more likely that only 360 owners will have Katamari bragging rights this fall.

One thing we do know, however, is that the game will definitely not be an Xbox Live Arcade-only title. Gamespot's recent reference to the game as being digitally distributed over Xbox Live appears to have been in error.

<![CDATA[Beautiful Katamari Details Roll Into Your Life]]>

The lucky bastards over at GameSpot got a chance to do a hands on with the new Beautiful Katamari and brought back some details with them. The game will be available via Xbox Live Arcade and from the looks of it, the gameplay and art style that make Katamari great have remained untouched. There will be a ton of new content though, including eight new playable characters, new music and all new levels. It will be presented in glorious 720p HD and will also include achievements to help pump up your anemic gamerscore. As in the other games, Beautiful Katamari will have a central area where you can access all your cousins, royal presents and save/load your games called Princetown. Clever, eh?

The best news of all is that Beautiful Katamari will be rolling on to XBLA sometime in October making it a mere four months away. I just hope that it's appearance on XBLA will bring with it an appropriate price tag and some good downloadable content somewhere down the road.

No word from Gamespot on the rumored Xbox exclusivity, but if Newsweek's finger-on-the-pulse guy, N'Gai Croal, is right, we should hear all about it come E3.

<![CDATA[Rumor: Beautiful Katamari 360 Exclusive]]> Has Microsoft secured yet another Xbox 360 exclusive title in Beautiful Katamari from Namco Bandai? Yes, writes Newsweek's N'Gai Croal in his latest entry for his Level Up blog. Following a string of exclusive—some merely "timed exclusives"—such as Ridge Racer 6, Eternal Sonata, and Ace Combat 6, it doesn't seem that unlikely that Beautiful Katamari would go strictly Xbox, as Croal points out.

Given that PlayStation fans have already had their fill of three Katamari titles, combined with Microsoft's desire to expand its library with non-shooters and the paltry PS3 install base, an exclusivity deal, timed or no, makes good sense. Namco Bandai and Microsoft seem like great corporate pals. I bet MS would've even let them publish Frame City Killer without a peep!

I guess we'll know if and when the PLAYSTATION 3 is getting a new-gen Katamari at E3. Exciting times, aren't they?
