I was really skeptical about this game myself, it did look rough and the control binding sucked. It's unoptimized and runs a little rough at times also, but i'm actually enjoying it. I think we as gamers have gotten a little TOO jaded when it comes to new IP, so quick to shun and turn our nose up at the little guys trying to make a name for themselves. Most people are basing their opinions off the demo or the first hour or so of gameplay, and it really doesn't start to get action-packed till about midpoint when everything goes awry. Stop looking for the next bioshock/halo/grimdark fps, and just try something a little different.
This is the exact reason devs are scared to try new IP, and why we are stuck with giant stale corporations like EA and Activision.
Oh and i'm hoping one day we see a timesplitters game on the PC, it'll never happen, but I can still dream!
@Aaron-: "and it really doesn't start to get action-packed till about midpoint when everything goes awry"
Then that means they failed from a design standpoint.
Gamasutra has endless numbers of articles that harp on how important it is to hook gamers in various stages, and the overall lesson is one learned by books, movies, music, etc eons ago.
You have 60 seconds to get them intrigued, 15 minutes to convince them the game is worth their time, and 60 minutes to hook them until the end.
If you aren't running out some of your best stuff until the 4 hour mark, then you are going to fail for the majority of your consumers.
@Luke Caplin: The Oblivion I played had you throwing fireballs, hacking rats, talking to Patrick Stewart, helping protect the king, seeing him getting killed by magic using shape shifting assassins, being told you are the key to the universe, and then being let loose into a huge beautiful open world to explore.
this is a great game, I've had it on PC for about a week now, and I'm loving it.
Low budget game with great concept and a lot of personality. Sure graphics are meh, but the fact that the engine can render hundreds of men onscreen at once can make battles extremely fun and immersive.
Support lower budget games with lower prices and buy/rent this game!
@Poul Wrist: Yeah, I got that, but I was responding to his comment to support low budget games with low prices.
My point was that the price isn't that low (at least for the consoles).
As for supporting low budget games, I would be all for that if the game is tackling a genre or premise that it can compete in.
Why would I want to play a $2 million FPS instead of a $50 million FPS? Those differences in production value are going to be HUGE. It won't make the more expensive game better in all cases, but if two teams tackle the same premise with those different budgets, there's no way the $2million one is going to come close.
There's enough AAA competition out there that the bar is set pretty high for a shooter. Unique game mechanics could overcome some difference, but not all, and it doesn't sound like these guys nailed anything so well that it is worth bothering.
Prepare for a single-digit framerate while sprinting, screen tearing while rotating, and Xbox level graphics in general. Then throw on unskippable cutscenes, a 10-minute monologue you have to sit through, then a tedious tutorial, and finally off you go to your first real mission.
Which I failed because I shot the guy was supposed to be protecting, which I didn't know I was supposed to protect. That's right, it was the first mission and I'm supposed to protect someone. I hate escort missions in any variation. So that was the last straw.
I got about an hour into the game before I stopped playing. I remember the marketing was about using powerful futuristic weapons on armies from the past. But an hour in and I was still using era-appropriate weaponry.
I don't know how far in you gotta get to be blasting ancient Romans with a laser shotgun, but don't plan on it early.
I downloaded the demo awhile ago. You guys are fortunate that I'm able to screen cap a CG scene from the game and post it above for your viewing pleasures.
The concept isn't all that new but if the graphics are sweet and the thrill of shooting old war soldiers with a fully automatic machine is as good as it sounds, I'm in.
They wound up giving it a 95/100. With a 94/100 Metacritic average, that's not much of a deviation from the consensus.
That said, I'd rather try the demo than rely on a review, though I'm realistically less enthusiastic after seeing that score. But, I'll download the demo before I read the review and let words change my mind further.
@HeavyMental: Go to IGN or Gamespot. I hear they have lots of those moving picture reviews and previews over there. No need to hurt your brain meats trying to read.
My friend flipped when he heard the concept for this game. I think it's on his "Day One Purchases" list.
He played the WWII level against the Germans, he went basically commando on everyone with the shotgun. Until the allied trooper Dexter handed him the greatest rocket launcher EVER. Every missile-volley rocketed off into the air, then returns in a spectacular display of long range explosives. Insomniac should be creating a similar weapon!
The Chasers could have been cool, like little balls of homing grenades, but the spokesmen at the booth just said they were meant to knockout historically important people instead of outright killing them.
We watched someone play the level in the cornfield. That fight was so one-sided; all allies dead and the last man standing was being hit with every bullet all the time. That player didn't get the quick reload feature.
Great game, though I probably can't play it on my under-powered Macbook.

If I was releasing at $19.99 or even $29.99 I would support your sentiment (if not your cause), but $49.99 just isn't much of a reduction.
There's lots of AAA stuff out there that I have missed and is lower in price by now.

Interesting concept but the box art just screams "low budget".

@liquid_kore: Agree, but I'll take it over the last game cover concept they had early in production.
How did that not come out right? XD

@liquid_kore: isn't that the same art from Command & Conquer, but with a civil war dude slapped on?
