For those looking for BC, there are new PS2s available for $140, $130 and less, and used for lower prices than that. If you need to have a BC PS3, they are still out there in the wild, but you have to look. Sites as popular as Amazon would have a hard time keeping them in stock if they had them for sale. Look elsewhere, try CAG, ebay, other avenues. There are definitely used 60 gigs around waiting to be bought.
Claiming you won't buy a PS3 without BC isn't going to convince Sony to suddenly fix their error, and those old models will only become more rare as time passes. Just the way it is. Alternately, people could try waiting out for the inevitable price drops, maybe redesign(s), and then get a cheaper PS3 AND a dirt cheap PS2. Not ideal, but could save money down the road. And don't fool yourselves, the PS2 is the best machine for playing PS2 games.
I just realized how deprived a lot of you are. I can understand if the price tag is just out of reach but the lot of you have some really ridiculous desires and needs.
The PS3 had the bigger exclusive library in 2008, and will continue the trend in 2009; yet the lot of you seem to only want 1 game and it either falls into a defacto genre or franchise.
"I only want FFXIII, FF7 Remake, Killzone 2; Otherwise it has no games."
That has been the mantra for so long...while true gamers are enjoying a varied experience in platformers, shooters, survival horrors, puzzle games, RPGs...There is the sour bunch who will for the most part stay isolated in their "What works" and "Cookie Cutter" sandbox and just play the games that they are familiar with.
Over half of the games that have been released on the PS3 thus far have been new IP's and frankly they have been nothing but stellar (albeit lack of commercial success).
I don't understand the "want" for just 1 particular game or franchise. I'm looking forward to Killzone 2, Versus XIII, Infamous, Heavy Rain, GT5, God of War 3, Resident Evil 5...see what I did there?
I'm sorry but limiting yourself to just one genre or franchise is just...I feel sorry for you.
@element7: Exactly. Seems like many commenters in this post are only aware of the popular/controversial games for PS3, nothing else. There are plenty of games out there, both exclusive and multiplatform. Not doing any research isn't an excuse for claiming there's nothing that interests you..
Not wanting to buy multiplatform games you already own is understandable, but pretending they don't exist or assuming they are automatically better on one platform or the other is idiotic.
Contrary to popular belief, there's more out there beyond what television and popular opinion tells us. Crazy..
@element7: That's the thing that primarily irks me when I see people rampantly bemoaning the so called "lack of good games" for the system. The PS3 library has grown by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years just as the PSX and PS2 did before it.
It has some of the most varied and different software available on all three current console platforms.
Resistance 1&2 Motorstorm 1&2 Heavenly Sword Warhawk Uncharted Ratchet & Clank Future Folklore metal Gear Solid 4 Socom Valkyria Chronicles Ninja Gaiden Sigma and LittleBigPlanet are just a selection of the exclusive games that many people praise in one way or another.
Even smaller more niche titles like Disgaea 3 Buzz Eye of Judgment etc. are fantastic in their own ways.
That's not even taking into consideration upcoming exclusives such as Uncharted 2 Ratchet & Clank Future 2 inFamous Killzone 2 God of War III Final Fantasy versus XIII etc. And of course that's only what's known about now.
Never mind the fact that there's a myriad of multi-platform titles already released (Call of Duty 4 Assassin's Creed Rock Band etc.) and forthcoming (Street Fighter IV Resident Evil 5 Final Fantasy XIII etc.). Sure some sites wish to tout the perceived "worse" quality the PS3 versions supposedly have but there are just as many titles on the opposite end of the spectrum which will become all the more apparent in the future since many companies are now designing and developing their games with the PS3 as lead platform.
Lets not forget the absolutely wonderful PSN games out there. Super Stardust HD Pixeljunk Monsters Wipeout HD etc. are all awesome games. And of course mult-platform titles like Bionic Commando Rearmed Megaman 9 Street Fighter 2 HD Remix etc.
All three platforms have their benefits and deficits. Those who bemoan the PS3 for it's so called lack of quality software are gullible naive ignorant and outright liars.
There's obviously things you can dislike (later release of Dualshock 3 removal of backwards compatibility late trophy integration/lack of universal adoption mandatory installs etc.) but there are as many issues with the other two platforms. And many of the "well my console is better than your console" line of reasoning comes straight down to preference (controller of choice online service composite/component/HDMI etc.).
The PS3 has a fantastic library of games to enjoy that is only going to continue growing as time goes by not only in quantity but also quality.
Damn! Another deal I can't avail of since I'm not from the US...Hopefully I can get around to buying a PS3 before the year is up. Just in time for Gow3?! I hope so...
I love having a 60GB model (upgraded to a 160GB hard drive though). The card readers, extra two USB slots and PS2 compatibility are all features I use. I even love the chrome finish.
god help me, I nearly bought one. Then I realized I was just being gripped by Price Drop Fever. See Sony? If you make your prices more affordable, even die hard Sony haters like me consider buying your console.
@ThickSkinned: yeah, me too. I was about to jump on it, and then I realized that Valkyria was probably the only thing I'd play... and I have a queue of six great unbeaten games on other systems to go through.
If they'd lowered it to $300, I may have forgotten about the queue long enough to grab my credit card.
The PS2 compatibility was nice during the transition period, but I haven't played a PS2 game since last winter. Once you start playing in 720p and 1080p, it's really hard to look at anything less.
@Kensukevic: I dunno, I often find there's something to be said for gameplay...appear to be in a disturbing minority here. Really? You can't play a PS2 game because it's not in 720 or 1080p? Your loss...
@Crumplecorn: But maybe a 'good game' to him is weighted more heavily on graphics. This is the same problem with traditional game reviews that try to put numbers and stars on things, not everyone has the same criteria for what they like in a game and what makes it a good game.
@TearsandScreams: no, it's the fact that after youve played HD games, you start nitpicking about what looks good and what doesnt in the HD games. when you go back it's like you are getting off of a drug and are succumbing to the side effects of not doing it anymore. it's hard to go back to low def, it's not even about eyecandy (@Crumplecorn:) it simply doesnt look seem as good. even if it's the best game ever, it will look worse than the worst looking game in HD(whatever that may be). the only games i can see myself going back to are probably the god of war games, shadow of the collosus, the jak and daxter games and games that came out on the ps2 in 2005+. other than those, they better have been the best games ever to be played for more that 2 minutes. also, i'd play some ps1 gaes, but those are classic so they dont count.
@obey81: people who have B/C(i have 80 gig B/C) bare;y ever use it. the PS3's games look so good that we dont want to go back to low def. thats why i dont have a 360. (see what i did there?)
Between saving on tax, saving $50 off of retail price, and getting free Blu-Rays, this isn't a horrible deal. I would jump at this if I hadn't already when MGS4 was released.
"Every day that passes I feel more and more silly for spending $600 on the 60GB at launch. Then I slip in a PlayStation 2 game and feel much better about it."
@Essonse: Not really, maybe Fahey just doesn't like that he spent the $600 when people have gotten 60GB PS3s for less. Nothing wrong with wanting to get the same thing for less money...
@nolanvoid: Amazon offers free shipping and you don't have to pay sales tax. My guess is that Dell has a business entity in your state and you will therefore be charged sales tax purchasing from them. Oh, and Amazon offering the 5 free Blu-Rays.
@y2julio: Blame that on Gov. Patterson, dude wants to tax everything nowadays. Unless I'm mistaken and there has always been sales tax for Amazon for NY, as far as I know, never happened to me when I lived up there 2 years ago.
@Ryguy226: @y2julio: Sorry, I should have stated that the exception states are where Amazon has a physical business presence... New York being one of those states.

@ThickSkinned: I'm not seeing that on their website, unfortunately, and even if that was the case, it likely wouldn't apply to deals of the day, since those are not general purpose sales, just one-time things, you know? They're not a price drop, just a quick bargain.

@doubtful: You are probably right, but I've known people to have good luck with this this year...
I'd advice the OP to just give them a ring and ask politely, their customer service is usually pretty friendly and if they can't give you the discount they can at least give you the official policy so you'll know for the future.
Only orders placed before September 1, 2008 are eligible for a price difference refund under the Post-Order Price Guarantee policy. As of September 1, 2008 we are no longer offering discounts if prices change on our website after you make a purchase.
The price still isn't justifiable for my wants or needs. I will eventually by one, yes, but by looking at the exclusive library that it has, and will have, it just doesn't warrant enough of a reason to get it just yet. I know it's a debated topic, but when most of the games I want are already out, or coming out for the 360 or PC, I just can't find the sense to spend so much money on a console that I only want a few games for.
I will just wait for the price to go down a bit further (or a FF7 remake/Chrono series game to come out), and wait for more to come out for it, so that I can finally tell myself, "Just by the fucking system already!"
@xAnarChisTx: That's pretty much the same position I was in, and it was MGS4 that broke me. With that being said, I have not been disappointed by my PS3. Certain games that are multi-platform, I actually enjoy playing more on the PS3 than the 360. Reasons for this include: ease of controls, better graphics, lack of multiple discs to deal with, and better sound (I purchased the 360 before the Elite was out).
@xAnarChisTx: Valkyria Chronicles was my breaking point, but they had my sale simply because it was Overworks. That's probably not a lot of people's breakdown point, but it sure as hell is mine! That and Disgaea 3.
Sony still didn't get my sale though - I got a refurb 60GB. I've been loving the PS2 BC - seriously, the virtual memory cars alone make that a keeper just because I was able to dump about 12 years of old saves, all the way back to my PS1, into one easy spot. Seriously Sony, why did you cut the one feature you got completely right!? Was it just too much GOOD in one thing?!

@Rebochan: I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles on and off through the past month am only at chapter 13's battle (I think there's 18 chapters) and I absolutely love the game.
A fantastic gem that is sadly being overlooked by many. The demo was fun but it doesn't even do the game justice.
@4nonymo: So what are the multitude of games that you like in other consoles that PS3 doesn't also have? Really, you should have stopped at "don't have $400".
@gencid: I seriously don't understand that. If you can't find at least a handful of games that interest you on any console, you must not play too many games...
@Đipic: exactly, they dont belong here. i dont own a 360, but there a few games i'd buy one for, had i: A:actually wanted an xbox B:hadnt set out a personal vendetta with microsoft C:if my other experiences with the xbox pale in comparison.
Such as the Call of Duty series, Dead Space, Fallout3, Prince of Persia, Resident Evil/Biohazard 5, Street Fighter IV, Skate 2, Madden, FIFA, GTA series, etc. etc.
I hate it when people say the PS3 doesn't have games they want, when in actuality, they do want PS3 games. They just don't want them ON the PS3. Maybe you meant, "a. Didn't have an xbox360"
I hate the game arguement, bot h sides are wrong. Obviously, there are great games on the PS3, as are on any system. However, I have never played a call of duty. I don't enjoy MGS(although i acknowledge, it is a great game, just not for me, to put it in perspective, I'm not into Halo either...). I have Madden, POP. Fallout # and Dead Space for my 360.
However, I do want a Ps3, and I have since the day I heard it was in production. The reason? I LOVE my PS2. I LOVE the library of games. And I know that if they continue the series I love(like Yakuza 3, this coming stateside would send me to get the PS3 NOW!!) they will come on the black god box.
So, I guess I want the PS3 based on potential. And $400 is too much for potential. I can understand the comment dimipapa made, though I'm not sue I agree with it.
@kwkwyjib0: I feel even more sorry for the guy who paid 1000 dollars for his, or the people who paid thousands of dollars for pre order slips. God some people are DUMB.
@DTownsu: That's how I got my PS3 at launch. Bought 2, sold one for $1200, kept the other for free. See kids, waiting 3 days in line to sell new consoles to rich idiots really is worth it!
@kwkwyjib0: I paid $600 dollars for mine... But I've been playing it for a couple years now, it's got backwards compatibility, and I had enough money for it anyway. I'm happy!
@gomerkyle9: That's how I see it. Yea, I paid $500 for my 60GB, but I bought it the day that it dropped to that price. I have had my system plenty long enough to feel that I have gotten my money's worth out of it.
@kwkwyjib0: I know a rich preppy kid who went to my college (extremely conservative guy; won't use public transportation for fear of interacting with teh blax) and was in line to get a Ps3 on launch day. Long story short some guy bought his spot in line for $200. Cash. Money.
@IRHari: Oh I'd also like to add to that. My fiancee at the time sold her spot in line for $300, and she wasn't even getting one, lol. Do I feel bad? Not at all. People will throw their life savings at you if they feel its worth it - you just have to know where to look.
@JDotCDot: It just occurred to me: is it possible that one of the reasons Sony removed backwards compatibility was to create a sense of greater value in the launch machines so that early adopters didn't feel alienated as the prices started to drop very quickly on the console? Maybe I am just reading into it too much but regardless it does seem to have had that effect.
@JDotCDot: I used to love mine, until the Bluray drive broke. Then I loved the replacement Sony sent me until the drive broke on that one too. Now I love the 80GB one they sent me because they didn't have any more 60s. *sob*
@JDotCDot: Agreed. Sony is absolutely retarded to have gotten rid of backwards compatibility. And the customers more so for buying them without knowing what they're getting into.
I love my launch system, 2 years strong and no problems! If mine ever breaks I'll be demanding a 60gb replacement or I'll just threaten them with the Better Business Bureau. Always works for most companies.
haha well, I bought my 60 GB PS3 about 2 years ago at Circuit City for $500, and it came with a free controller.
So technically I got a $450 60GB PS3 around the time that Ninja Gaiden Sigma came out. Having it for this long was worth it as opposed to saving $100-$200 and waiting two years for an Amazon Deal-of-the-Day.
