Without any link to an article or tech specs, I'll speculate this is a plasma TV. LCDs are polarized normally, so you'd have to have some kind of crazy high res checkered polarization filter to do it with an LCD display.

Actually... even if they had two layers of luminescent display like phosphors in an SED, how WOULD they set up the filters? If you had two polarizing filters perpendicular to each other, whatever was behind the rear one would be blocked out!

...so maybe they really are polarizing the light in alternating directions at each pixel... WTF.

This is the perfect solution for home 3D, but it boggled my mind how they did it for now...

We've heard enough complaints about people needing HDTVs for the current gen consoles, this will just make things worse. The TVs you'll need for the are of the very high end.

Please remember, Sony has an EXTREMELY long history of promising functionality that seems amazing for their consoles just to drum of business, then it's gone forever.

On another note, it might be fun to play Wipeout this way. I'll be excited to see Gran Turismo 5 in this way.

3D in video games has been a long time coming. Next they need to combine it with a wii-like sensor on the glasses so that the screen will move with your head. Of course, that would mean the screen would have to be located in the glasses themselves, much more expensive.

@P3nnst8r: Yes, but his doesn't put the screens in the glasses. That is why his is a "window". With screens in the glasses, you are more in a 1st person shooter mode. Much more realistic IMO. I worked on some stuff like what he did when I was an undergraduate.

@indyit: You can do this with your computer too, just use a webcam modified to filter infrared and the infrared led thing he spoke of. Pretty simplistic in nature, but ultimately awesome.

@oldbucsfan: Perhaps with the Flexible OLED system that Sony showed off today, they could make that more of a plausible reality.

How would walking and running work, however? Short of having a multi-directional treadmill at your disposal, I think that might be the deal-breaker for immersiveness.

What? A 3D technology for videogames that doesn't suck? YAY!

Also, related note: Tonight's Championship football game is being shown at Rave Motion Picture Theatres in 3D for a $20 fee. Should be fun times.

@Kreepman: It could, but some people are just more sensitive then others.

If it's not too drastic of an effect I think most people would have no problem with it, and the rest would probably get used to it over time.

@Dreamwriter: Nintendo killed VR with that stupid PoS... RED?! Really? If it had even been green, at least that wouldn't have slaughtered people's eyes. If it had been full color, it would have been much better... yeah, they'd have to wait a few years for it to be economical, but seriously... Nintendo is the reason that failed, not because people wouldn't have gotten into HMDs or VR...

One problem with 3D games/glasses is that I need perscription glasses.

Meaning I have no way of comfortably wearing 3D glasses.

@DeadlyWhispers: That's a definate no. I don't recall what the insurance coverage (if any) is on something like that. Not to mention that I'm not about to invest in major corrective surgery simply to "keep up" with Sony.
